EDITORIAL: Enough is Enough: The Avengers/TDKR Rivalry Gone Too Far

I am surprised that a number of people on this site are adults with all the childish remarks. My thoughts on this trivial debate.

Ok, so as most of you guys know, there has been a debate on this site for months now over which movie will be better, TDKR or The Avengers. Both are being done by Talented directors, who know what they are doing. The reason why this debate shouldn't even be happening right now is because the movies are two different things being done by two different people who have there own style.

Whedon- He is making the Avengers, a culmination of the past four years of lead in movies. This film is an escapist epic. None of the things in this movie could or would ever happen in real life, and we except it because it is our favorite characters on screen together for the first time. This is Phase one, a beginning. Yes it has a transformers feel, but now everyone compares explosions to Micheal Bayformers. TDK had explosions. So do a lot of films, so what? The Avengers will do good in the box office because Fans of the lead in films will come. Hardcore geeks will come to see it. And Hardcore Whedon fans will purchase a ticket. Now... This being said it will probably make back its budget at least 4 fold. if not a little less. The movie is an experiment, nothing like this has ever happened in the history of CBM's so we should all be excited

Nolan: Know as the man who Batman movies dark again, and rightly so. Nolan is the man who showed us that a CBM could be more than just characters in colorful costumes. They could be real people. That CBM's could be used to comment on society in creative ways. This is the third film in Nolan's trilogy, and the final one, it to will be the definition of Epic. The film is grounded in reality so that we can more easily connect to the characters. The scope is large, and Bane is menacing as ever. Batman could die! And so could I, from suspense. People who will come and see this will be fans of the first two films, or just of TDK, as well as hardcore Nolan fans, and a general audience who are interested in a Batman. This movie will probably break box office records. Maybe not as Avatar (We could only hope) But maybe Titanic. This is the ending to an epic trilogy.

Now Here are my predictions for how the two films will play out. Critically Box Office wise and With general audience.

The General Audience: will love both films and so will the fanboys, we will love them be cause they will connect with us emotionally in one film, and blow us away with awesomeness in the other.

BOX OFFICE: I am excited for both of these films, but realistically I have to say that TDKR will top Box Offices and make more money. I only say this because looking at the previous film and how it become the highest grossing CBM of all time, it is bound to do it again. Avengers will pull through with enough to continue the franchise and then some, but unfortunately it will not beat TDKR. But who cares, Box Office numbers only count if you are looking for a sequel. Avengers will get one because it is phase 1. TDKR won't because it is the end of a trilogy.

Critically: Once again, I think most praise will come from critics for this movie because it is Nolan, and for some reason critics hate absolutely hate any CBM that is not TDK or the original iron man, to the point where they will say a perfectly good film like Thor was a piece of shit, just cause the main character didn't brood enough. Now Avengers will not get panned by critics but I am guessing it will reach at least 70 to 80% on the Rotten Tomato meter. While TDKR will get 90% because critics will have such high expectations for it to be like TDK and it may not be what they expect so they will rate it lower. Which is understandable, having to top TDK would be hard.

Altogether both will be very good films for different reasons and trying to compare them is like trying to compare Star Wars to Psycho, both are really good films, but not for the same reasons. They are of two diff genres even just like these Avengers is SCI-FI and TDKR is Mystery/Thriller.

So quit arguing and have fun seeing your favorite characters on screen again for a thrill ride you will not soon forget!

All true. Thanks for being intelligent and writing an article, rather than making some comment making fun of Marvel fans like "Whedon 4evar" or bashing Nolan 'cause of his fanbase. It's great to see someone intelligent making an article that means something for everyone. Don't worry about the trolls that'll be on this thread any minute to say something like "But Nolan is God and Marvel sucks" or "Nolan doesn't make CBMs".

Thumbs up, this needs to be on main!

the arguement should be happeing, its not about them being 2 differant things, Avengers- Cheesy Popcorn flick
TDKR-serious take on batman
its actually about the age old MARVEL vs DC war, which was started by MARVEL may i add (joe quesada), unlike the old days when stan was in charge, and it was a friendly rivalry, they would borrow ideas, cris cross writers/artists, and even had comics with eachothers characters in them and even parodied eachother, Marvel had "howard the duck" to do this, and DC had "Ambush BUG" to do the same
i dont think it should be happening, but you cant stop it, might as well just run with it, because b*tching about other peole b*tching, is just getting annoying

@gamecreatorjj. That whole comment was "bitching". And no, just because it did happen doesn't mean it should. That entire comment is completely hypocritical, this is supposed to be a positive article, but you can't have agreement, can you?

At all you Nolanites or Marvelites who want the other movies to fail, that only hurts you. If Avengers fails, no Justice League for a long time, and if TDKR fails, the genre loses ALOT of credibility, and so does Nolan. Remember how affected everyone was when Green Lantern was panned? Do you guys want that again? Really?

^What Nolanite said^

It is silly, of course, but if you choose to take it seriously, then that is your problem. It's what the "general audience" avoids altogether.
marvel72

marvel vs dc will go on forever, well as long as the two companies exist.

the dark knight rises will be a good film, but all this record breaking talk i don't think so.

batman begins unknown villain(s) by non comic book readers $371,853,783.

the dark knight $1,001,921,825 well known batman villain by everyone.

the dark knight rises unknown villain(s)well apart from catwoman. $750,000,000 max

the avengers i predict will take between $750,000,000 & $850,000,000.

but you can't count out the amazing spider-man,the worse movie spider-man 3 took a massive $890,871,626.

@Nolanite: I don't really think it's that funny. Dumb maybe. Dumb can be funny. It used to be funny, but after a point it just gets old. People here lack creativity when they try getting under each others skin.

"Nolanites tired from taking Nolan's dick up their ass hahahaha xD" x100
"Marvelites too stupid to understand the films enjoy ur explosions hahahaha xD" x100

Boring. And lame.

Anyway to your article there will always be this debate. Me personally I cant wait for both films. I'm a true comicbook fan and I don't get biased on which movie comes from a certain publisher.

i love both films and comics. let's face it avengers appeals to a broader and bigger audience than DKR (hint hint - kids). they are being released in imax AND 3d, they are bound to make more money. although batman is my fave hero of all time, avengers will make more. BUT BOTH WILL BE EXCELLENT AND EPIC!!!!

i dont care who comes out on top bc i am a true comic book fan who enjoys and loves both, unlike certain idiots out there who cant see that one couldnt function without the other bc if it was just marvel, there would be no competition and things would be boring due to the fact we only see supes and bats on screen. if it was just marvel, then we would see we are oversaturated from sony, fox, and marvel's adaptions

I'm eagerly awaiting them both.

However, what the Nolanites are failing to realize is that IF Avengers DOES fail, then they can kiss ANY chance EVER of seeing a JLA movie. TDKR has nothing riding on it if it fails or succeeds, nothing at all.

I agree, this debate is dumb as well as the whole Marvel/DC debate.

Sure, I grew up reading Marvel, so naturally I like Marvel a little more, and tend to like their characters more.

Does that mean I think DC sucks? nope. Both Marvel and DC do some great things and some dumb things. You can't talk trash about one, and act like the other is perfect.

Both have given great stories over the years, and both have given some stinkers.

Bottom line, enjoy the good stories, regardless of the publisher.

Same can be said about the films. A good film is a good film, regardless of who directs or writes it.

But I do agree, its kind of hard to compare The Avengers to the Batman movies. They are two totally different types of films.

This is like Forman vs Ali in their.

Whedon=Forman- Thinks he's gonna knock out the greatest with just one huge punch.

Nolan=Ali-just sitting back doing the rope a dope and then...

Well,,we all know how the Rumble In the Jungle ended.

Did u just compare nolan to one of the best boxers of all time? Wtf

I think some people whine and complain way to much on this site, I can't see if your a fan of comics in general how you wouldn't want to see both movies. These are suppose to be exciting times for us,now that were finally getting big budget cbms, enjoy them why there plentiful

breakUbatman - 3/22/2012, 6:10 AM
You know whats funny about this site, people get so offended when a movie they look forward too is trashed but have no qualms about doing the same to others.

This rivalry is nothing compared to the amount of crap that was thrown at First class or should I say Fist-ass as it was called here. Or how all the positive vibes people got from the 4 minutes of Green Lantern footage that was released.

We'll just have to watch the movies and decide for ourselves, I expect TDKR to be great but third time isn't usually the charm when it comes to movies unless you're talking Star Wars prequels. Avengers looks to be shaping up well and looks crazy fun, but they could just be giving us more of what we saw in the last five movies.

Just make up your own minds about what you want to watch...

...then you have my permission to die.

TDKR is GOING TO BE AWESOME

AVENGERS is GOING TO BE FREAKING EPIC

We all win, because one thing im sure of, NONE of these movies will suck and BOTH will raise the bar for what we should expect from CBM!! CHeers Nolan and Whedon!!

I think the difference in story telling, visual style etc from these 2 films only makes the whole CBM genre more diverse and therefore better. As truly brilliant as I think TDK is and very likely TDKR, I think having all CBMs copy the Nolan formula is tedious, therefore the diversity afforded to us by both films is awesome. I am excited for both films and agree with dahamma that both films will raise the bar.
Xeriath
Xeriath - 3/22/2012, 7:08 AM
As much as I like and agree with your article, I think it's completely pointless. The back and forth between TDK fanboys and Marvel fanboys over which film will be better will never end. Whenever you have passionate people fighting over something they truly love, the fight will NEVER end in a draw. The Avengers could come out and get over 90% on rotten tomatoes, destroy box office records, and have amazing word of mouth and you would still have Nolanites bashing the movie saying how much it sucked. The same goes for TDKR. Personally, I am excited to see both movies and think both will be amazing in their own right but apparently I'm in the minority. In The end though, this all boils down to a war of passion. Which means no side can truly be the winner.

I'm thankful that I never knew I was supposed to pick a side. I have always liked both houses of comics. When you buy into the versus stuff you are the big loser in the end. The Marvel worshipers are deprived of The Justice League. I love them. The DC or Nolan prostraters miss out on the X-men. Tragic. I am old enough to remember standing in line for the first Batman movie from Burton. I didn't care about little flaws. I was in awe. Thankfully I am still that way today whenever a CBM comes out. I want badly for them both to succeed. More success means more movies. We all win.
