Christopher Nolan's filmography has had a tremendous impact on the love of many for escapism, heroics, superheroes, and movies in general.
While watching The Odyssey, one couldn't help but be reminded of this thought: "Nolan's movies are truly about home."
Or, as the Ancient Greeks might have called it, "Nostos."
In The Odyssey, Penelope wondered, "What if we ran? Took your fastest ship and brightest crew and headed for the horizon. Held hands on deck as we hold hands at dusk, chasing the escaping sun."
Does this not sound reminiscent of Dominic Cobb’s “You’re waiting for a train” speech in Inception?
Christopher Nolan proves that home is not just the places we travel to, but the people we travel with, the objects we carry with us, and the love that transcends time and space. That's what Nolan's movies regularly remind us.
What makes this theme so fascinating is how differently Nolan approaches it from film to film.
For Cobb, home is a place he is desperate to reach, even if he has to descend through layers of dreams to get there.
For Cooper, home becomes something more complicated. He leaves Earth to save his children, only to discover that time itself can become the distance separating a parent from the people they love.
Bruce Wayne spends years trying to escape Gotham, only to realize that Gotham is the place he is willing to risk everything to protect.
In Dunkirk, home is visible across the water, close enough to see but impossibly far away.
And for Odysseus, home is not simply Ithaca. It is Penelope, Telemachus, memory, identity, and the question of whether the man who returns can ever truly be the man who left.
That is what makes Nolan's version of "nostos" so powerful. Home is never easy. It must be fought for, remembered, rediscovered, and sometimes redefined. His characters do not simply return.
They are changed by the journey, and the places and people waiting for them are changed as well. The destination matters, but Nolan repeatedly suggests that who is waiting there may matter even more.
Sometimes, finally reaching home means discovering that home has changed forever too.
