MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE Branded "Woke Garbage" Because Of "He/Him" Pronouns Joke In First Trailer

The first trailer for Masters of the Universe received a largely positive response, but the movie is being branded "woke garbage" due to a joke about He-Man's pronouns.

The first trailer for Masters of the Universe debuted yesterday, and it took no time at all for people to find something, anything, to get upset about.

In the teaser, Adam Glenn is stuck in a dead-end job in corporate America and desperate to return to Eternia, a world he remembers from his childhood. On his desk is a name placard that includes Adam's pronouns, "He/Him."

While those are often used by companies in the real world, the gag here is meant to be that "He/Him" = "He-Man." It's a clever play on words, but as we first reported on Toonado.com, not everyone feels the same way. In fact, they're convinced that Prince Adam has gone woke!

"Now they’re making a Masters of the Universe and giving He-Man pronouns. These people won’t stop until they ruin everything," one X user wrote, while another declared, "New Masters of the Universe movie is going to be woke garbage."

One even shared their belief that this is an example of "forced diversity," making it clear there's "no chance" they'll be "wasting [their] money on this pathetic c**p," because, "Go wike go broke" (we're assuming they meant "woke").

So, has He-Man been ruined by the "radical left"? Well, there may be any number of reasons for longtime fans of Masters of the Universe to pick fault with this big screen adaptation, but a blink-and-you'd-miss-it gag about He-Man's name being pronouns isn't likely to derail this upcoming blockbuster.

The much bigger risk for Amazon MGM Studios is making a Masters of the Universe in 2026. The studio is relying on older fans showing up, along with younger audience members who will be introduced to He-Man and Eternia for the first time.

Here's a screenshot of that "controversial" scene...

In Masters of the Universe, Director Travis Knight brings the legendary franchise back to the big screen in this epic live-action adventure. After being separated for 15 years, the Sword of Power leads Prince Adam (Nicholas Galitzine) back to Eternia, where he discovers his home shattered under the fiendish rule of Skeletor (Jared Leto).

To save his family and his world, Adam must join forces with his closest allies, Teela (Camila Mendes) and Duncan/Man-At-Arms (Idris Elba), and embrace his true destiny as He-Man — the most powerful man in the universe.

Written by Chris Butler and Aaron Nee & Adam Nee & Dave Callaham, and directed by Travis Knight, Masters of the Universe stars Nicholas Galitzine, Camila Mendes, Alison Brie, James Purefoy, Morena Baccarin, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, Charlotte Riley, Kristen Wiig, Jared Leto, and Idris Elba.

Masters of the Universe opens in theaters on June 5, later this year.

@TK420 - I think the joke is brilliant 👏🏽. It perfectly nods to the classic name, while delving into the gender-bent nonsense of the last few years.

@KennKathleen - I agree with you 100%. It’s “tongue in cheek” and this movie isn’t taken itself too seriously and that’s the way it should be.
People will find anything to complain about in this day and age.
And what’s so brilliant about it is that “He-Man” is literally a pronoun. 🤣😂

@KennKathleen - "one X user wrote" So some people on X said something and that deserved an article? It's getting stupid at this point. That's not news at all Josh just loves stirring shit up. It's most likely a throw away joke, but it could actually be how he gets his name and that might piss off the pronoun folks. I wonder if Josh would take their side if they complained that it minimizes them somehow.

@TK420 -

It's a bad idea to include woke jokes in a movie whose target audience isn't woke.

Those jokes mentioned by the author of this article are the kind of subliminal content for indoctrination that no one likes.

Masters of the Universe has its longtime fans, and they don't want to see a watered-down, woke version of He-Man.

If the filmmakers want an audience, the least they can do is respect the source material, which is perfect and doesn't need to be changed. They should just give the audience what they want to see.

I'm surprised most of these comments are making fun of the lone loser. The whole "snowflake" argument was always classic projection

@TK420 - “I have the power… to call HR because your micro aggressions threaten me”

Honestly, on repeated viewings of the trailer I’m getting the sense that this is mocking that stupidity more than embracing it. I hope I’m right, there.

@lvcl - speak for yourself. I was born in 77, still have literally every He-Man figure released from when I was a kid in my basement (pissed my parents got rid of the Castle) and I thought it was a harmless amusing joke that’s literally a play on “He-Man”.

Not a big deal.

@LordCanterbury -

Fair enough 👍 Born in ’77 with a full He-Man collection definitely gives you some authority here

I get that some people see it as harmless wordplay, but from a classic fan perspective, it feels unnecessary.

Masters of the Universe has its own mythology and tone, and it doesn’t need modern corporate jokes layered on top of it.

If I want comedy, I’ll go watch a Jim Carrey movie. After the ’80s adaptation flop, what many of us want now is the best possible Masters of the Universe adaptation — played straight, respectful, and focused on Eternia, not winks at modern culture.

And yeah… losing Castle Grayskull is a trauma that never fully heals

I swear, anti-woke/MAGA dudes have to be the dimmest bulbs out there. It's a joke about pronouns, because the character He-Man has a pronoun (he) in his hame.

@Clintthahamster - the decline of education rates in America starting in the 80s [i think], directly led to the MAGA party. Its a direct arrow

Also lead exposure in gasoline which helps explain the Boomers

@Clintthahamster - I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again & again: it’s epic irony that the MAGA crew are all about “masculinity” and everything they believe goes with it - yet they are the most emotionally fragile human beings I’ve ever seen.

If you’re triggered by a scene of 3 women talking alone on the Bridge in a Star Trek show, you’re not a “real man” you’re embarrassingly soft & weak 😅

These people wouldnt last 1 week in corporate world where people are putting pronouns in their email signatures.
First "diversity mandatory ed training course" and they'd fold

But then again the people making these comments aren't educated. Never went to or finished college, to ever land a corporate job. And are too tired from overnight shifts at Costco warehouse, to use the full power of their brains
