SCARY MOVIE Will Now Go Head-To-Head With MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE After Moving Release Date

The live-action Masters of the Universe reboot is going to have some stiff competition this summer, as Scary Movie has now moved its release date up a week...

Paramount Pictures recently debuted the first trailer for Scary Movie (the "6" has evidently been dropped), which was originally set to hit theaters on June 12. Now, Marlon Wayans - who returns as writer, producer and star - has announced that the horror parody "rebooquel" is coming a little earlier.

Scary Movie is now set to arrive on June 5, when it will go head-to-head with the live-action Masters of the Universe reboot.

"We are currently in the edit for Scary Movie,” Wayans said in his Instagram post. “The bad news is, we’re no longer going to be releasing on June 12. The good news is, due to the overwhelming response and the worldwide excitement, we are releasing a week earlier. That’s right: June 5th is the new date for Scary Movie! We’re starting off the summer with a bang and a laugh fest. So I’m really excited about coming early.”

Most of the Scary Movies performed very well at the box office, taking in north of $896M worldwide through five instalments. The 2000 original was one of the biggest R-rated horror movies of all time back in the day, so MOTU could be in trouble despite the built-in nostalgia factor and positive word of mouth from some recent test-screenings.

During a recent interview with EW, Wayans said that this new movie's aim is to "cancel the cancel culture."

"This movie is multi-generational. It's a conversation comedically that is needed, that needs to be had from our generation down to Gen, what is it? Gen Alpha. And it's all inclusive."

"What we're trying to do is bring back laughter," he added. "This is about bringing back comedy the way it used to be. And I think the only way to do it is you have to cancel the cancel culture."

Twenty-six years after outrunning a suspiciously familiar masked killer (“Ghostface”), the Core Four are back in the killer’s crosshairs and no horror movie IP is safe. Marlon Wayans (“Shorty”), Shawn Wayans (“Ray”), Anna Faris (“Cindy”), and Regina Hall (“Brenda”) reunite in Scary Movie alongside returning favorites and fresh faces to slash through reboots, remakes, requels, prequels, sequels, spin-offs, elevated horror, origin stories, anything with the word legacy in it, and every “final chapter” that absolutely isn’t final. Nothing is sacred. No trope survives. Every line gets crossed. The Wayans are back to cancel the Cancel Culture.

Both of these look like they're going to be pretty entertaining, seriously surprised just how good He-Man's characters translated to live-action this time around.

What’s the advantage in moving it up a week into another movie?

I already thought that MOTU might underperform and this move now makes me feel that even moreso unfortunately…

Anyway , I’ll be personally checking that out rather then Scary Movie (the trailer had a couple of chuckles for me but that’s it) so still hope it atleast turns out well!!.

@TheVisionary25 - Unsure how much of a crossover audience wise there is for these two on the big screen, on streaming sure but at the BO a fun family action fantasy movie based on a kids animation and toys V a R rated horror parody of an R rated horror franchise...

...there is however a chance of a bunch doing a Masters of the Scary Movie double bill thing.

ALL of that said, I was unsure how well MotU would do at the BO no matter how good it turns out to be, incredibly hard to predict with a movie like that one.

@Apophis71 - that’s true , it does seem like there would be some audience crossover there perhaps but not a lot

I just don’t know if He Man has the cultural relevancy these days that it used to have back in the day but that’s part of the reason they are doing the film is to reignite that spark so hope it works out.

@TheVisionary25 - Yup, the cultural relevancy is the question mark on it however likely trying to get Grandparents from the original 80's stuff and/or parents from the latter 00's reboots taking kids to the film considering where the movie going demographics have been skewing more and more (ie massive drops in younger audience numbers so looking for ways to get old farts introducing more youth to the big screen stuff).

Major bit course is just selling merch and as long as it doesn't fall TOO short on BO, doing OK on streaming the toy sales will likely turn it into profits.

@Apophis71 - true…

I didn’t even think about this perhaps doing better on streaming which could be but we’ll see since the movie is still a few months out so it could always surprise.

"Scary Movie" to "MotU": "Run, bitch, run!" Seriously, they are 2 totally different types of movies, so I don't see them really taking away from each other unless it's like you want to go see a movie and are like "Do I want to watch an R-rated comedy or a fantasy action flick?". Other than that I don't really see an issue.

It's screwed. Might as well be a Netflix release. Pointless even putting it in cinemas now.

None of the jokes in the scary movie trailer landed for me

The trailer was dull and the jokes were flat. It's like they just re-used all of the crap jokes from the previous movies and put them in this film.

I don't see any problems for MOTU.

Nolanite out

@dragon316 - Dude all of the Scary Movies have done well. Plus this is the first in like 20 years that the entire OG cast is back. This will make bank. First one made almost 200 million on a 19 million budget.
