DREDD Star Karl Urban On Potentially Reprising The Role Ahead Of Taika Waititi's Planned Reboot

A direct sequel to 2012's Dredd remains highly unlikely, but star Karl Urban is keen to return as the iconic Mega-City One lawman - even with a reboot on the horizon...

Fans have been hoping for a positive update on a potential sequel to 2012's Dredd for a long time, but we got word last year that a reboot is in development from Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi and screenwriter Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation).

Updates have been pretty much non-existent since, but we do know that the character's rights holders, Chris Kingsley, Jason Kingsley, and Ben Smith of Rebellion Developments, were integral in Waititi and Peace being assigned to the gig. Last we heard, the movie was being shopped around studios.

Assuming this will be a full reboot, the chances of Karl Urban returning as the notoriously ruthless Mega-City One lawman are obviously very slim, but that doesn't mean The Boys star has lost interest in reprising the role.

"I would love to reprise that role in a heartbeat," Urban told The Playlist recently. "I really would. I had so much fun making that movie. If I’m not part of it, then I’m all good with it. I just want to see more Dredd stories."

There was speculation that Urban might be involved in the Mega-City One TV series that was being developed by IM Global and independent U.K. games developer, Rebellion, but with no word on the show since shortly after it was announced back in 2017, we assume it's been well and truly scrapped at this stage.

"Well, listen, it’s very, very early to get into any specifics on that, but I’ve gone on the record before saying that I would love to come back and be a part of that world and tell more Dredd stories," Urban said of the series back in 2020. "There is just a plethora of great, great stories within the Judge Dredd universe. I think that Jason [Kingsley] and his team – I think that the legacy of Judge Dredd is in great hands."

For the time being, 2000 AD fans will have to make do with the Rogue Trooper animated movie from Moon director Duncan Jones that's on the way.

Who would be your pick to take over from Urban as ol' lantern jaw? Let us know in the comments section.

Mega City One is a vast, violent metropolis where felons rule the streets. The only law lies with cops called "judges," who act as judge, jury and executioner, and Dredd (Karl Urban) is one of the city's most feared. One day, Dredd is partnered with Cassandra (Olivia Thirlby), a rookie with powerful psychic abilities. A report of a terrible crime sends Dredd and Cassandra to a dangerous area controlled by Ma-Ma (Lena Headey), a drug lord who will stop at nothing to protect her empire.

I'm down for a reboot. If Waititi is involved, it might be safe to say we will be waiting awhile. Kathleen Kennedy mentioning Waititi's Star Wars project in print last year, I was surprised that idea wasn't a distant memory.

@JayLemleAgain3X - With how much they got right with the last one (far from a perfect adaption but then what is, and ample room to evolve to being closer to source) and how much they got wrong with the Stallone version I'd be nervous of a reboot but always down for more 2000AD adaptions if well made.

Oh good god please no. Let Urban come back and get the same crew from Dredd, its simple. Taika made one good movie and everyone seemingly only remembers that and not the however many bad ones he definitely made. Need i remind you all of Love and Thunder?

Karl was great as Dredd in the 2012 film and while there’s a chance he could reprise the role given his friendship with Taika , I feel that’s slim at best but we’ll see.

Also for anyone worried about Taika being at the helm of a Judge Dredd film , I can understand but the comics have a satirical edge to them with stories that can range from funny to terrifying tonally so I could see him being a good choice for this tbh.

Anyway , if this happens then I would be interested in checking it out though it likely won’t be any time soon given the amount of projects Taika has in the pipeline but we’ll see!!.

@slickrickdesigns - Simple answer, total BO was only $41M on a reported budget of $45M...

...great film, total BO flop but then it was barely advertised and followed an awful prior adaption that aimed for a completely different market (as in broad more family friendly lighter/colorful tone with Sly compared to Dredd's darker and more mature tone).

I really wished the Mega-City One TV series was moving forward. I'd be willing to give Taika a chance if tackled it under a TV format, it's more interesting to follow in that format comic book adaptations.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 3/6/2026, 11:03 AM
@NinnesMBC - The one thing Dredd was lacking in was some of the twisted humor of the comics and Taika CAN do that well (what we do in the shadows and JoJo Rabbit being examples of that) even if he IS hit and miss so not against Taika doing anything 2000AD but would like the reassurances of some of the comic creators heavily involved and decent oversight to reduce his worst impulses overblowing the silly and missing the mark as a result (but a LOT of silly in the comics)

The major problem with L&T was being filmed in Aus during lockdowns (less oversight) with all the casts kids part of it (nothing makes a parent go overboard with silly than doing dress up with their offspring). Under normal circumstances L&T could have been gr8, had all the ingredients there for it, but those two key aspects are why it drifted WAY off mark IMO.

And yes, L&T WAS bad, I simply understand WHY it drifted into being bad from the potential great it could have been (and for all it's flaws still found it fun, just wouldn't watch it a second time, lol)

I'm a Kiwi, so I 'get' the very Kiwi personality that Taika injects into a lot of his movies. Because of that he should not be doing a Judge Dredd movie.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 3/5/2026, 7:22 PM
@bcom - i feel like Taika’s dry & absurd sense of humor could work for Dredd given the comics have some of that in them.

@TheVisionary25 - True. Judge Dredd comics do have quirky undertones, but I still don't know if Taika is the right choice for a Judge Dredd movie. I'm happy to be proven wrong though.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 3/6/2026, 11:08 AM
@bcom - Specifically Dredd, should have two hands on deck crafting it as the lead is VERY deadpan whilst dealing with a LOT of silly, DARK, but very silly thus if you have a partner for Taika with an eye on the serious drama aspects and Waititi leaning into the humor and silly it could work very well.

Some of the other separate 2000AD IP's beyond the Judge, Taiki could be near perfect for on his own if he brings his What we do in the Shadows skills to them.

Keep Taika the [frick] away from DREDD - he's brilliant in his own little corner of the world - I loved Wilderpeople and WWDITS
but his 'takes' on big IPs are NOT needed.

DREDD was shockingly good for as small as it was - basically a gauntlet flick in an apartment building.

Imma watch it again - Karl Urban was everywhere for a minute - great actor and doesn't seem like a douche.

Urban is great as this character; it really is impressive how well they were able to make a project like this with an obviously limited budget. Shame it hasn't received a sequel already.

“Dredd” was amazing. If you want a sense of a Waitiki Dredd movie just read the early comics. They were pretty goofy and self aware, which actually wouldn’t make for a very good movie in my opinion. The tone of “Dredd” was great and that’s what we need in a new Judge Dredd movie or series.
Brand0nD42o1
Brand0nD42o1 - 3/5/2026, 8:19 PM
I think both Judge Dredd movies are rad and I saw them both in theaters but if they’re doing ANOTHER reboot, then it might be cool to see small cameos from him and Stallone in it somewhere but it’s way too long past the point of a sequel to Dredd. By today’s standard, a Judge Dredd movie that’s more faithful to the comics is a lot easier to get made than it used to be but the fact is that while Urban nailed the demeanor, Stallone nailed the jawline. The right casting choice will be what makes a 2000 A.D. movie as good as it has the potential to be.

I love the last Dredd movie and have seen the 3D version several times (because I have a copy) and I've been wanting to see a proper sequel since.
It's also, visually, one of the better 3D films (out of about at least the sixty that I've seen).
I wish them all luck with the new one.

I would love to see Urban back as Dredd. That movie was awesome, & he was unsurprisingly excellent in it.

Totally unrelated to that, but I don't want to give Josh the clicks he so blatantly fishes for, that Megan Fox article is ridiculous.

Posting about how Megan Fox is back on Instagram (justifying it by mentioning her being in Jonah Hex), & how everyone is saying how hot & ageless she is, is [frick]ing pathetic, even for him.

That is maybe the most egregious case of clickbait I've seen on this website in a long time, & that's saying something.

Worst thing they could do is give it to Waititi. Instant deal breaker.
