The Last Photograph Rotten Tomatoes Score Revealed; Zack Snyder Responds To Backlash: "I'm Not A Fascist!"

As The Last Photograph's dismal Rotten Tomatoes score is revealed, director Zack Snyder responds to the backlash to his latest movie...

Zack Snyder should be well used to his movies dividing opinion at this stage, but the director's latest passion project, The Last Photograph, has proven to be particularly polarising.

The film - which has yet to secure a distributor - had its world premiere at TIFF on Monday as an independent production and acquisition title, and quite a lot of the first reactions were scathing, to say the least.

As more critics have added their reviews to Rotten Tomatoes, the movie has generated a dismal score of 21%.

Snyder shared his response to the negative criticism (some of which was undeniably vitriolic) during an interview with Variety.

"This morning, I woke up to my X feed, and the discourse is incredibly energized by this battle. It’s like there’s a war going on — instantly — and on one hand, I don’t want to say it’s cool, but it has to exist in some ways. I don’t know why. The amount of energy and the amount of vitriol I find really incredible. 'I want to kill Zack Snyder.' 'Zack Snyder is a fascist.' 'Zack Snyder is a homophobe.' 'Zack Snyder is a bisexual.'”

The majority of backlash seems to stem from the perception that the film is misogynistic in its excessive nudity and depictions of violence against women.

"I mean, I don’t know. First of all, I would argue that the violence toward women and men is equal and that nobody is spared — men, women, children, everybody. The justice that’s doled out in the movie is in the same way that a hurricane doles out justice. To try and superimpose morality over it and want the violence to mean something — the meaning is that violence doesn’t work and doesn’t get anything done."

Snyder admits that some of the negative responses do get to him ("we're all human"), but he views a lot of the more extreme reactions - especially from those who haven't even seen the movie yet - as nonsense.

"There were only 1,200 people in the theater and there are thousands of comments! There was one I was reading where it was a guy who clipped it and said, 'I haven’t seen it yet but I’m sure it was horrible.' And look: Whether you like the movie or not, I’m not even commenting on that; but with me, it’s more clickable to say, 'I hate Zack Snyder! He’s a fascist!' than it is to say, 'I saw the movie and it was cool.' Nobody gives a [frick] about that. And obviously, I’m not a fascist."

Snyder recalls a similar reaction when 300 screened for the first time in Berlin, even though he views his adaptation of Frank Miller's graphic novel as "the gayest movie ever made."

"There was immediate discourse around the movie, and everyone booed and walked out. It was our first time showing the movie and we were like, “What the [frick].” They were saying it was 'a disaster,' 'the worst movie ever,' and a 'fascist' movie. Then we had a press conference where they were asking me all these questions, like, 'Are you a fascist filmmaker?'”

"The hallmark question was when one of the guys said, 'Are you pro-gay or pro-NRA? Which are you?' And I said, 'Look, I’ll be honest: I’m a tiny bit of both.' But obviously I’m pro-gay. I made the gayest movie ever made."

It's worth noting that The Last Photograph has received a few positive reviews, and some critics - whether they'd ever admit it or not - do approach Snyder's work with preconceived notions.

Assuming it ever actually sees the light of day, do you plan on giving this movie a chance?

The official synopsis reads:

“An ex-DEA operative must return to the mountains of South America in an effort to find his missing niece and nephew, following the brutal murders of their diplomat parents. Enlisting the help of a washed-up junkie war photographer, the only person to have seen the face of the killers, he sets out, determined to find the children and the truth, but soon learns he must also face the ghosts of his past. Their journey into the unknown takes them further and further away from civilization, bringing into question everything they believe, while slowly eroding the distinction between real and surreal.”

@SethBullock - a good point. I like some of his stuff, love some of his stuff and absolutely hate some of his films (I’m looking at you, Sucker Punch), but he feeds these idiots by acknowledging he gives a crap about their hate. The best he could do would be to ignore it all

Dude is one of those dumb people who has no idea he's dumb. He seems to have a complete lack of self awareness. He makes disjointed sloppy movies that a dopey 13 year old would like, but spouts off like he's making something deep, when he is shallower than a kiddie pool.

He's rode the coattails of his produce wife for all these years and her pull in Hollywood is the main reason he's been able to produce this childish slop so long. He cannot tell a coherent story to save his life. Snyder is Neil Breen with a bigger budget.

@Feralwookiee - Agree. He has the intellect of a 13 year old metal head that reads WWF magazines. He’s an incredible intuitive visualist, but has no idea how to tell a story. His Netflix movies were the nail in the coffin. He’s one of the handful of people where I hear his name and know immediately the movie is bad.

@alleverybody - I agree with you, although I would argue against him even being good with visuals.

His earlier movies were mostly filmed by cinematographer Larry Fong.
If you look at the movies that Synder served as his own cinematographer on, like Army of the Dead etc the drop off in visual quality is drastic imo.

Rotten Tomato onset matter anymore. They said Supergirl was great & that Gunns Superman was awesome...the fans say something totally different

You label those beneath you as "unenlightened" or "living in a dream world", while knowingly enabling the aggression of those who treat your work as religious gospel, by shieldding them and yourself behind self-proclaimed superiority and pseudo-morality.

You are, by definition, a fucking fascist.

Go fuck yourself, Zack Snyder.

He will never stop receiving sh#t from others because once you seriously piss off hard core fans, there is no forgiveness from many of them. This will never end and will continue past his death.

I would never make a film based on an established IP. The hatred is like a giant disturbance in the force that originates from the dark side (because it's hatred).

@LSHF - honestly given the fervor and default outrage , I’m surprised certain creatives are still willing to do any adaptations or take on established IP but I’m all for it…

I love seeing new iterations of stories and characters since it keeps things fresh so hope it continues even if they are ultimately good or not.

@TheVisionary25 - Oh,yes, 100%! I'm all for it and have been patiently waiting for these since the very early seventies. I've never enjoyed watching movies and shows so much (overall).

I just personally would rather avoid the inevitable hatred that comes with. Which makes me feel thankful that it doesn't bother these directors as much as it does me; otherwise I wouldn't get to see them myself!

@MarkCassidy @JoshWilding Could you stop making the text for ‘Rotten Tomatoes’ green or red? That automatically spoils that the movie is rotten or fresh and some of us try to avoid reviews and want to form our own opinion first. I don’t care about this movie, but I don’t want future movie reviews spoiled. Just a friendly request.

No, Zack, you're just a retard.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 9/16/2026, 9:29 AM
I do think whenever there is an article or just even headline around Zack , the discourse I feel gets heightened & heated but him saying that it’s more clickable if there is something negative being said then positive isn’t just true for him & his works but I feel is the case in general…

Positivity doesn’t sell while negativity does because if you are being positive about a film for example , the conversation might end just after one says “it was good” (even though you could have a discussion about the merits) but if you say that you hated it then you can really stoke the fire and manipulate others into feeling the way you you do while then making it into a lucrative business for yourself but that’s ridiculous , no one has done that..;).

Anyway , I might check out The Last Photograph if/when it’s released since it’s looked interesting imo even though the pretentious allegations just from the trailer seem true!!.

@MisterBones -

He will.

The guy can't take an L, and the characters are about to enter the public domain in 2035. Why do you think we have two different users here referencing "See you in 2036", one as his signature and the other as his username?

To say that they're obsessed, cult leader and cultists alike, is putting it very lightly.

@TemporarilyHere - Isn't there a clause that doesn't allow him to make TDKR, though? He can only use the 1st iteration of the characters, like the Steamboat Willie situation. Although it would probably benefit him, I guess, since his Batman is a murdering Psychopath, and the og used guns.
