UPDATE: Green Lantern Movie On The Way Following Lanterns' Success - And We May Know Who Will Lead It

According to a wild new rumour, DC Studios has decided to fast-track a Green Lantern movie following the success of Lanterns on HBO. Here's who the big screen project would revolve around.

UPDATE: While he doesn't comment on the Green Lantern movie rumours, insider Daniel Richtman is reporting today that "I hear a green light for Lanterns Season 2 is near." So, perhaps the Green Lantern Corps will remain on the small screen for now. We'll have to wait and see, especially in light of that recent update about the DCU's small-screen future from HBO boss Casey Bloys.

Lanterns has been a success on HBO, with positive reviews from critics and strong viewership figures on the premium cable network. DC Studios has reportedly started assembling writers for Season 2, but has James Gunn now pivoted to a Green Lantern movie?

The DCU TV series is very grounded and has reintroduced the Green Lantern Corps in a True Detective-style story that's light on constructs and cosmic action. Controversially, Lanterns has also killed Hal Jordan, though many fans are convinced that he's somehow still alive.

With Aaron Pierre's John Stewart set to appear in Man of Tomorrow, it might not be long until we get a more comic-accurate Green Lantern in the DCU (we saw the character's potential when Guy Gardner showed his ring's might in Superman).

Today, a rumour is circulating on social media that claims DC Studios is now fast-tracking a Green Lantern movie starring Pierre and Nathan Fillion. There's currently no word on whether Kyle Chandler will return as Hal, but it's worth remembering that we've heard the actor only signed up for a single season of Lanterns.

We wouldn't put too much stock in this claim for now. However, fans would welcome a big-budget Green Lantern movie that either pits the Corps against the Parallax-possessed Hal or even adapts the "Sinestro Corps War" storyline.

If, however, DC Studios is heading down the route of bringing Lanterns to the big screen, it could face the same box office challenge that Marvel Studios did with The Marvels and Thunderbolts*. Kevin Feige has learned the hard way that fans won't necessarily follow characters from streaming to theaters.

If these rumours are false and Lanterns Season 2 does happen, then the show will lose the two creative driving forces behind Season 1.

"Sources also say a writers' room for season two of Lanterns has been hard at work for more than a month, even though HBO hasn’t handed out an official renewal," a recent report from The Ankler explained"Lindelof will not return for season two, per sources — he initially signed on for a single season and is now focused on his HBO limited series thriller, The Chain."

"[Tom] King, who is working on DC’s animated Mister Miracle series, is also not part of the writers' room for season two but remains involved. To fill the void, Halt and Catch Fire creator Chris Cantwell was hired in May to serve as a co-showrunner alongside [Chris] Mundy."

Lanterns follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, Earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Alongside Kyle Chander and Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Nicole Ari Parker, Jason Ritter, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones round out the cast.

Five episodes of Lanterns are now streaming on HBO Max.

Doubt this is true. We just saw with Mandalorian and Grogu this year that when you go from TV to Theaters the same audiences will not follow or are unwilling to pay for something they already get on TV/Streaming app. M&G had higher viewership than Lanterns too.

If it does happen, its going to flop. DC already messed up by turning this into a TV show, its going to be hard to rebuttal.

@mastakilla39 - totally different situations

M&G is a victim of Star Wars brand losing favor and really underwhelming marketing + making a movie that’s reliant on 3 seasons of tv good luck

A lanterns movie can be relatively self standing from the show if the show is treated more like a prequel than the movie being a sequel

mastakilla39 - 9/16/2026, 10:40 AM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - Nah disagree, it will still flop because people do not like to do homework before watching a movie. Thats why a lot of MCU phase 4 & 5 underperformed and why a Lanterns movie will yield the same result. The Marvels, AntMan 3, Thunderbolts, Cap 4, etc. All sequels to the TV Shows flopped because Disney tried to force people to buy a ticket and a monthly subscription plan. Most will only buy 1, not both.

Only way a Green Lantern film works is if you don't make anything that happens in the TV show relevant and the Titular GL can't be anyone from the show so audiences won't feel like they have do homework or pay extra. So it has to be Jessica Cruz, Kyle Rayner, Alan Scott, etc someone who is going to be exclusive to the big screen.
ShimmyShimmyYA
ShimmyShimmyYA - 9/16/2026, 11:09 AM
@mastakilla39 - that’s why I said they have to treat the show like a prequel - helpful context but not required viewing. I don’t think a movie for now would need the homework like the others you listed , of course the longer this show goes on then yeah it turns into homework and hurts the movie

It’s crazy how I like, and dislike, the show at the same time LOL
mastakilla39
mastakilla39 - 9/16/2026, 12:26 PM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - If the tv show is a "prequel" then its required viewing. Disney has already proved that with all their movie sequels to Marvel and Star War shows that people will not pay for something they are use to getting on tv or at home.

People will only pay for exclusive or standalone story or characters. Its just plain viewer habits thats why most movies that go from tv to theaters have historically flopped.
ShimmyShimmyYA
ShimmyShimmyYA - 9/16/2026, 2:02 PM
@mastakilla39 - that’s not how prequels work

You don’t need to watch Star Wars episodes 1-3 to understand 4-6 , and if you lie and say you do then that whole franchise is a facade

I went from being against Chandler as older Hal to being a fan of his portrayal here. I definitely want to see more of his character, maybe even a flashback to when he and Sinestro were partners.

So we just listening to random people on Twitter now?.

Atleast certain ones like DanielRPK ,MTTSH and especially James Mack have built a reputation for themselves even if not all their scoops may pan out but I have never even heard of this guy till now.

Anyway , if it happens then cool since I like Pierre’s John and Fillion’s Guy but I will miss Kyle Chandler as Hal since he’s honestly been the highlight of the show to me for the most part!!.

With big-budget spectacle I'm down. I do not want a movie in this style. Loving the series, but I want more comicbook-y action, visuals, and spectacle.

Same.

Hal coming back in a younger body, rebirth style would be good for a movie. Add in flashbacks with him as a student of sinestro.

One more season on a tv budget adapting Hard Travelling Heroes and setting up Hal's return as Parallax, then do a big budget movie based on Emerald Twilight and Zero Hour with a slew of DCU appearances.

With it being Zero Hour you could make it the DCU's version of Secret Wars with multiversal appearances.

Fine by me, just keep James Gunn FAR away from it!!! I definitely feel that a big part of what has made Lanterns S1 as good as it is because Gunn clearly had little involvement with the creative.

I have a better idea. Don't let Gunn make anymore movies or TV shows. I cannot get over the disrespect to Hal Jordan that this series has shown. I know, I know, the series is not done. But there was no need to make him such an asshole to set up John Stewart. Maybe they are setting up Parallax. Maybe there is a redemption arc. I don't know. I just know that the series has been awful based on the way it has portrayed the most iconic Green Lantern.
