Marvel Television Boss On What's Next For MCU Limited Series, Pausing NOVA And STRANGE ACADEMY, And More

Brad Winderbaum, Head of Marvel TV, Streaming, and Animation, has weighed in on what's next for the characters who appeared in limited series, why Nova and Strange Academy were paused, and much more...

With the pressure no longer on Marvel Studios to produce an endless supply of streaming content for Disney+, Marvel Television's approach is changing. The plan now is to leave movie characters in the movies, while prioritising yearly TV releases like Daredevil: Born Again

The problem with the previous approach is that it meant introducing us to characters like Moon Knight and She-Hulk, only for them to then vanish from our screens for years at a time. In fact, Ms. Marvel is one of only a few characters to make the leap from streaming to theaters.

Talking to Agents of Fandom, Brad Winderbaum, Head of Marvel TV, Streaming, and Animation, weighed in on whether we could see Marc Spector and Jennifer Walters' respective stories continue in animation, for example.

"We launched a lot of shows in a short period of time, and I think many of them could have had a second season, a third season, but the system wasn’t really set up that way," he explained. "It was set up to create limited series and have characters cross back and forth between the features."

"We developed Nova, we developed Strange Academy," Winderbaum added. "We develop a few shows, some of them get redeveloped, some of them get kind of paused for a little bit to be revisited later."

"Not everything is going to be produced. We’re like a normal studio developing more than we make and only putting forward what we think is the best stuff and stuff that can sustain for multiple seasons," he noted, confirming that "there are characters on the live action side I would love to explore in future shows. We have some ideas cooking right now that I think will be really exciting to see come to fruition."

As of now, Daredevil: Born Again is the only yearly series being produced by Marvel Television, as there's been nothing to indicate that Ironheart season 2 is in the works or that Wonder Man and Vision will be anything more than one-offs.

We recently learned that Marvel Television is planning to release animated shows like X-Men '97 and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man yearly, but what of characters like Moon Knight and She-Hulk?

The latter is expected to feature in Avengers: Doomsday, while Moony's story should continue in Midnight Sons. Several other streaming characters are also expected to feature in the next Avengers movies, with Secret Wars on the horizon, so we haven't necessarily seen the last of them.

Let us know your thoughts on these updates from Winderbaum in the comments section below.

We're about to see how it should have been done with Gunn's DCU. I know about the restraints that were unavoidable (COVID, CGI-heavy projects crushing the FX houses), but imagine if the MCU had actually delivered on the promise of 'everything's connected'

@JackDeth - I mean , they were with the shows and movies more or less but then people started complaining about “homework”.
JackDeth
JackDeth - 9/29/2025, 11:37 AM
@TheVisionary25 - Right. They really couldn't win there. I'm saying imagine if all the stars aligned and all the heroes and villains introduced were able to show up in all the projects, instead of creating so many 'no homework' shows and films. That was what I was promised, but the 'fans' [frick]ed that up. Like how we're now seeing Rick Flag Sr. in Creature Commandos, Superman and Peacemaker. Imagine if we could have got Moon Knight alongside Jack Russell and TED, or had Dr. Strange show up on WandaVision, or had LOKI pop into Deadpool & Wolverine. Like, I know schedules have to align, but it feels like more could have been done to connect these stories.

@JackDeth - perhaps

In an ideal world that could have been great but you also don’t want to force them into the story either

@JackDeth - The "homework" thing came about when Dave Filoni wanted to port his Star Wars stories over to live action during The Mandalorian and the casuals started to realize that some of the characters appearing in the shows actually had history on the animated side of the IP and podcasters that was only casual into the genre complained that they thought they needed to do "homework" to watch all this stuff. I mean the conceit of all this MCU, Star Wars, DCU stuff is that it is loosely connected but no one ever said it all needed to consumed which I dont think the casuals understand. If you're a Marvel comic collector you have favorites you buy. You're not buying EVERYTHING they put out just because it all takes place in the same universe. That's ridiculous! But I think casuals think they are missing out if they do consume everything so they just wont watch at all.

JackDeth - 9/29/2025, 3:50 PM
@krayzeman - Right. I 100% agree. This is how people watch stuff all the time. You jump into a story already in progress and a few lines of dialogue get you caught up in no time. Soaps do it, WWE does it, comic books do it. 'SUPERMAN' should have taught people that we don't need to watch the beginning of a story to enjoy it. No one knew ANYTHING about Mr. Terrific and he was a fan favorite. People just want a reason to complain.

@JackDeth - I think your soap and WWE comp is excellent. Imagine telling a potential WWE fan that they needed to watch all the years before to get why the WWE is the way it is now? There are documentaries for all that stuff but I think the "homework" negative came when people who liked the live action stuff in Star Wars didnt want to watch the animated stuff to get more character context because THEY DONT WATCH ANIMATED stuff in general. Like you said stop creating a reason not to watch this stuff and just dont watch. What then happens is you get Kevin Fiege doing interviews where he says he wants to create contecnt that doesnt require homework. What?? What about all the fans that come into this stuff loving that part of it?? You cant please everyone but stop worrying about these casuals that jump in and out of this stuff. There are dedicated fans here! Alas thats not how American capitalism works though...sigh

I need to finish Marvel Zombies. Wasn't super impressed with the first episode outside of liking the animation. Heard it gets better and there's only four episodes left so I'll finish it in the coming days.

I really hope we get an Ironheart second season or a follow up of some kind sooner then later since I liked that show and it had one of the more intriguing endings of any of them so far imo.

I’m assuming some of it was setup for Strange Academy but oh well.

Anyway , looking forward to seeing what Marvel Television & Animation comes up with soon!!.

Step one is getting rid of anyone who was involved in the creation and development of these shows. Including Producers.

They basically handed off a multi-billionaire IP to Reddit and bluesky users and said “have at it”

Absolutely no one asked for Strange Academy. So glad it got shelved.
JackDeth
JackDeth - 9/29/2025, 3:51 PM
@TheRationalNerd - Why would you be glad it got shelved if all you have to do is not watch it?
TheRationalNerd
TheRationalNerd - 9/29/2025, 9:22 PM
@JackDeth - Because it shows that theyre putting better thought into releasing sh*tty shows. Why does my support either way bother you? 🤔
JackDeth
JackDeth - 9/29/2025, 9:48 PM
@TheRationalNerd - Because it's a bitch move to hope for something to fail. You talk about 'shitty shows' like your opinion is the only one that matters. Ignore it if you don't want to watch it, kid.
TheRationalNerd
TheRationalNerd - 9/30/2025, 8:09 AM
@JackDeth - "if you don't want to watch it kid." What are you 50?? Clearly they found the show to be sh*tty as well...which is why its canceled and we aren't getting it. I feel like reality will hit you eventually and you'll realize you're arguing with yourself on a show that doesn't even exist. There's nothing to ignore. The show isn't happening. Stop being soft. 😂
JackDeth
JackDeth - 9/30/2025, 8:47 AM
@TheRationalNerd - Nah, but clearly you're 12. It's fine. Someday you'll be a man and realize that your opinion doesn't mean shit to anyone but you. It's a hard lesson to learn, kid. Keep thinking you're hard, though.
TheRationalNerd
TheRationalNerd - 9/30/2025, 2:02 PM
@JackDeth - Even if I was 12 (which I'm not) why would you argue with a twelve year old about their opinion. I think you have deeper internal issues stemming from casting your insecurities upon other people. Its social media, the whole point is to voice your opinion on matters regardless of your stance/viewpoint on things. Being a "man" is accepting another's opinion for how they feel and keep it moving. Again, you're being soft. Man up
JackDeth
JackDeth - 9/30/2025, 2:43 PM
@TheRationalNerd - So, now you're going to pretend you were only speaking for yourself? You literally said 'No one wants to see this' like you were speaking for everyone. If you had voiced your opinion as only your own, we wouldn't be having this conversation. Also, you may not be twelve but I can tell you're young because of how casually you throw around sexist language. Maybe think a little before you post.
TheRationalNerd
TheRationalNerd - 9/30/2025, 3:13 PM
@JackDeth - "My" opinion that no one wanted to see this is still "my" opinion? You literally proved nothing with your rant and your willpower to prove me wrong here is hilarious. lol Maybe it'll register to you that the show was put off for a reason. Like, you're still holding onto this holy reason that the show was going to be a hit. If it got shelved it was more than likely shelved for a reason (including after Marvel's creative reset) What does my age have to do with conversation? Why are you deflecting the main topic here? The show isn't getting made plain and simple so why are we still on this topic? lol Like damn let it GO! 😂
JackDeth
JackDeth - 9/30/2025, 3:23 PM
@TheRationalNerd - I just don't like people speaking on my behalf. That's like me saying 'Everyone here thinks you're an asshole.' I would never assume, but I imagine there are quite a few that might.

She-Hulk, please. I know, some of you guys hated it, but there's great news: there's no law saying you have to watch. I enjoyed the first season quite a bit and would love another.
mountainman
mountainman - 9/29/2025, 3:12 PM
@LoudLon - The “you don’t have to watch it” approach has led to Marvel having a lot less raving fans than just a few years ago. A smart move would be to make projects that most people want to see.
LoudLon
LoudLon - 9/29/2025, 4:20 PM
@mountainman - It was Disney's "more is better" directive that resulted in sub-par (for the MCU, anyway) material, and that's what led to less raving fans. But She-Hulk had legs after the initial hater response, and it was a top-10 show for Disney. I'm not saying the show was perfect, the writing was hit and miss at times, but compared to most of the other Marvel Disney Plus shows, I felt that other than Daredevil, it's the one show that they could easily get a few seasons out of. Not because they both feature attorneys; DD's thrust has always been action. She-Hulk's real potential lies in a humorous case-of-the-week approach.

Marvel has tons and tons of C, D, and Z-list characters -- goofy, oddball, weird heroes and villains who would likely never be given a serious live-action adaptation, but who would fit perfectly with the humorous tone of She-Hulk. Just sitting here right now I imagine how much fun it would be to see something like, say, Stilt Man suing the city for tripping over an open manhole, or Slyde needing a defense attorney because he accidentally slid into some dude's Lamborghini.

The only real drawback is the budget. As they joked in the first season, She-Hulk herself is an expensive digital effect. But there are ways they can pinch their pennies in other aspects of production to offset that.

Anyway, my two cents.
mountainman
mountainman - 9/29/2025, 4:34 PM
@LoudLon - You are free to your opinion, but I’d venture to guess that a lot of people who have stopped regularly supporting Marvel did not like She-Hulk.

That terrible show isn’t specially what made me back off, but it was certainly a stain on the universe.

In the past, live-action Marvel shows filled the gap between Marvel films, now we're going to get nothing, but the continuation of 10-year-old Netflix shows and Animation. That is NOT what I signed up for with Disney+.

Seriously considering cancelling my subscription but I'm waiting to see what is announced at NYCC. Vision Quest is the only Disney+ show I have any hype for. Also, I swear if Nova becomes an animation project, I'm going to blow a gasket!
