Lucasfilm Passed On A STAR WARS Movie From David Fincher; Update On THE HUNT FOR BEN SOLO Revealed

It's been revealed that Lucasfilm also passed on a Star Wars movie from filmmaker David Fincher, but this time, it's easier to understand. We also have an update on Adam Driver's The Hunt for Ben Solo...

A few days ago, Adam Driver revealed that he and filmmaker Steven Soderbergh were developing The Hunt for Ben Solo, a follow-up to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Unfortunately, Disney execs couldn't wrap their heads around Kylo Ren's return—really–and the project was scrapped.

Now, The InSneider (via SFFGazette.com) has revealed that the House of Mouse also decided against moving forward with a Star Wars movie from The Social Network and Fight Club director David Fincher.

The report doesn't share many details, other than this being another story set after Episode IX that would've focused on an unnamed character from The Rise of Skywalker. The project was Fincher's idea, but talks fell through when Lucasfilm refused to give him final cut on the movie.

Fincher got his start on Star Wars, where he worked as a crew member on Return of the Jedi. Lucasfilm eyed him to direct The Force Awakens very early on in its development, while Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy produced his 2008 movie, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Fincher has since set his sights on a follow-up to Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood for Netflix.

Back to The Hunt for Ben Solo, and when Jeff Sneider reached out to sources about the timing of Driver's comments and whether they might be "setting the stage for his return," the insider added, "I was assured that there are no plans for him to return to the Star Wars franchise, especially with Kennedy expected to step down from her post early next year."

Star Wars fans have been very vocal about wanting this movie to happen, with many perplexed that the reasoning for it being scrapped is that it wouldn't make sense for Ben Solo to have survived The Rise of Skywalker (the movie's entire premise revolved around the fact that, somehow, Palpatine had returned).

"I always was interested in doing another 'Star Wars,'" Driver said on Monday. "I had been talking about doing another one since 2021. Kathleen [Kennedy] had reached out. I always said: With a great director and a great story, I’d be there in a second. I loved that character and loved playing him."

"We presented the script to Lucasfilm. They loved the ideaThey totally understood our angle and why we were doing it. It was called 'The Hunt for Ben Solo' and it was really cool. We took it to Bob Iger and Alan Bergman and they said no. They didn’t see how Ben Solo was alive. And that was that."

These Star Wars movies aren't happening, but The Mandalorian and Grogu and Star Wars: Starfighter are both on the horizon. Whether those are more exciting than the unmade projects listed above is up for debate.

@Oberlin4Prez - The only interesting character in that terrible sequel trilogy and a true descendant of Anakin, and they killed him. No legacy at all for Luke, Han, or Leia, but the evil Emperor and Jabba live on through their kin. Sickening. A Ben Solo redemption trilogy would have been great. His "Force Sacrifice" could have easily been shown to be an illusion used to save Ray before disappearing to atone for his evil ways. Throw in some world-hopping adventure and a love interest, and the True Legacy character could have lived on. But Disney wanted to "Kill the past" and with it a billion-dollar franchise because "The force is female" now. SMH

Tomorrow we will learn that Christopher Nolan submitted a draft of a Luke Skywalker, Jedi trilogy and Disney said “no thanks”.

I thought he survived because Rey could bring people back to life with the force or something, but don’t remember a whole lot about that movie other than a vague crowd scene that maybe involved a young woman who maybe was Lando’s daughter. Then the scene on the old Death Star where there was some waves and then a lightning fight with Palpatine. But maybe none of that even happened.

Sine they could displace objects through the Force why not bodies.

@LenSpiderman - she wasn't Lando's daughter. she just also happened to be black.

@McMurdo - With Lando's smooth talk and libido, he should have a few planets' worth of kids out there.

@McMurdo - maybe I’m remembering one of the “7 characters Naomi Ackie could be playing, and 4 that she definitely isn’t” articles.

Damn man , that really sucks if true!!.

However was it Disney or Lucasfilm that rejected it because we know the Driver & Soderbergh one was vetoed by the former though the latter wanted to do it while it seems unclear here since you mention that the latter didn’t want to give him final cut but then you say it was The House of Mouse that passed on it (I guess it could have been both).

Anyway , I can understand Lucasfilm’s trepidation to an extent in giving Fincher final cut since it’s ultimately “their” property at the end of the day so they wouldn't want any filmmaker to do whatever they wanted with it (same with Villenueve and the recent Bond film) and after his experience with Alien 3 , I can also get Fincher not wanting to do a big studio film at all much less without final cut so likely wasn’t gonna work out regardless.

I wonder what unnamed Rise of Skywalker character it was going to be about though?.

It could have been Poe or Finn but idk why I keep thinking it could have been Zorii Bliss , I feel she would fit Fincher’s style & sensibilities.

Anyone that EVER wants anything Star Wars that is connected to the last horrible trilogy or the even worse Solo should be boiled in oil and fed to bigfoot.

Kennedy's reign of terrible is over.

I'm wondering, are the people mad about the Ben Solo movie getting canned just thinking '[frick] it, we've had one 'somehow, Palpatine returned' moment, might as well bring everyone back' or are they just not thinking at all ?

Because I understand not giving a [frick] about continuity since the last trilogy, but I kinda wanna see them get back to quality, too.

@OrgasmicPotatoe -

A Ben Solo film could be quality regardless of the continuity leap.

@Mongrol - With an established franchise like that, you need both. If continuity doesn't matter and the rules are all made up anyway, might as well bring Obi-Wan, Anakin, Han, Luke and Yoda back too.

They can have a decently written movie, but if they shit all over the established lore just 'cuz, then it goes back to being just that, shit.

The only interesting part of Ep. 9 was Ben's redemption with his dad, picking up his mother's lightsaber to fight along side Rey. Then they chucked him off a cliff immediately and had him disappear.

There is a lot of potential for the last Skywalker bloodline to take the path of Darth Revan and become great force for the light side. ALso he can birth the next trilogies jedi twins with Rey.
