Lucasfilm first revealed plans for a new Star Wars movie titled Rogue Squadron in December 2020. The announcement came with an elaborate promo video that saw filmmaker Patty Jenkins walking down a runway before boarding a life-sized X-Wing.
We'd later learn that Jenkins had postponed work on the project due to an undisclosed scheduling conflict. For a time, it seemed like Rogue Squadron might come after Wonder Woman 3 or Cleopatra (both of which have also fallen by the wayside), but it never happened, and Jenkins, who said in 2024 that she still owes Lucasfilm a script, hasn't shared an update for a while now.
There have been conflicting reports about whether the plug has officially been pulled on Rogue Squadron, including chatter about potentially pivoting to a small-screen version on Disney+.
However, with Disney and new Lucasfilm co-President Dave Filoni eager to make Star Wars a theatrical franchise again, a streaming series seems doubtful. The upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter may also make Rogue Squadron redundant.
Knight Edge Media (via SFFGazette.com) has shared some insights into the unmade movie's complicated production journey, revealing that Jenkins wasn't the first filmmaker attached to the project. According to the site, J.D. Dillard (Devotion) took a crack at the movie in 2018 with Luke Cage writer Matt Owens.
Dillard ultimately parted ways with Lucasfilm (he was one of many filmmakers to do so on Kennedy's watch), but has said his Star Wars movie was "inspired by the TIE Fighter PC game he played as a kid." Now, his comments make a lot more sense.
Jenkins was reportedly brought in at the end of 2020 to put a new spin on the concept, only for then-Disney CEO Bob Chapek to push for more Star Wars streaming series on Disney+. In late 2022, a Star Wars project codenamed "Ghost Track 17" was in the works and part of Jon Favreau and Filoni's Mandoverse.
The Mandalorian's Rick Famuyiwa was attached to serve as showrunner alongside Rayna McClendon (Obi-Wan Kenobi). While it ultimately fell apart, the site has now learned that this was another version of Rogue Squadron that had been destined for television. It's unclear whether Nick and Carlton Cuse's 2025 project—reportedly about a team of X-Wing pilots—was also Rogue Squadron.
Either way, with Filoni now calling the shots at Lucasfilm, any movies and TV shows developed under Kennedy's guidance have likely been sidelined. Chances are Rogue Squadron will never happen, especially as the studio shifts focus to the recently announced Star Wars: Episode X.
