STAR WARS: Taika Waititi's Movie Reportedly Still In-Development... For Now!

Despite rumors to the contrary, it seems Taika Waititi's untitled Star Wars movie is still in-development at Lucasfilm... for the time being, at least!

It's been quite a while since we heard anything about Taika Waititi's planned Star Wars movie (we've actually had very few updates since the project was first announced), and the Thor: Love and Thunder director recently joked that he'd made very little progress, and was having trouble finishing his script.

"Once he’s had his way with [the Deadpool] franchise, like a cruel and indiscriminate virus, he’ll move on to another, and another, and another," said the filmmaker while presenting Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy with the TIFF Tribute Award. "And then eventually, probably Star Wars. And unlike me, maybe this guy manages to finish the script for that."

Waititi's comments were clearly made in jest, but have seemingly led to rumors that his Star Wars feature had been cancelled - though we now have conflicting reports on the matter.

According to insider Daniel Richtman - who is usually pretty reliable - the film is indeed "dead" at Lucasfilm. This wouldn't come as a major surprise given how little we've been told about the project, but during the latest episode of the Hot Mic podcast (see below), Jeff Sneider claimed that the movie is still in development... for now!

Sneider believes that there is a chance it will ultimately be removed from Lucasfilm's schedule, but as of right now, Waititi is still determined to forge ahead and embark on his journey to the Galaxy Far, Far Away.

Though his popularity has declined somewhat after Love and Thunder (his latest film, Next Goal Wins, has also received mixed reviews), Waititi is still one of the most highly sought-after - not to mention hardest working - directors in Hollywood, and is currently juggling several different projects, including a live-action Akira remake.

So, even if his Star Wars movie is still in the works, who knows when he'll get the chance to actually shoot the damn thing.

Plot details are still a mystery, but Waititi did offer the following during a 2021 interview.

“We’ve got a story. I’m really excited by it because it feels very me. I tend to go down that little sincerity alleyway in my films. I like to fool the viewer into thinking ‘ha it’s this’ and then them going, ‘Damn it, you made me feel something!’”

This doesn't give us very much to go on, obviously, but with Waititi at the helm, it's sure to be something at least a little off-the-wall.

Would you be disappointed if Waititi didn't get to see his Star Wars project to fruition? Drop us a comment down below.
