Speculation Mounts That Zendaya's MJ Will Have A Much Bigger SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY Role Than Expected

Following an interview with Zendaya's stylist, Law Roach, speculation is mounting that Zendaya's role as Michelle Jones-Watson (a.k.a. MJ) in Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be bigger than expected...

By JoshWilding - Nov 05, 2025 06:11 AM EST

While we know that Zendaya will reprise her role as MJ in next summer's Spider-Man: Brand New Day, there have been contradictory reports about how big a role she'll play in the movie.

At the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange's spell meant that Michelle forgot Peter Parker. However, when he crossed paths with her again in the movie's closing moments, there was a glimmer of recognition, suggesting their love might trump the spell that saved Earth-616.

Now, there's speculation that Zendaya's role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be bigger than expected. Her stylist, Law Roach, has revealed in a red carpet interview that he's already preparing outfits for the actress to wear on the movie's press tour.

Someone with a glorified cameo likely wouldn't need to make red carpet appearances. While Zendaya may be there to support fiancé Tom Holland, this does seem to imply that she'll have a substantial role in the next Spider-Man movie.

She's already been spotted on set alongside Holland as Peter Parker visited Aunt May's grave, leading to theories that we'll see MJ regain her memories of who is beneath Spider-Man's mask during this street-level adventure.

Jacob Batalon is also confirmed to reprise his role as Ned, while it was recently rumoured that Tony Revolori is returning as Flash Thompson (a hint perhaps that we'll pay a visit to MIT). It's not clear whether we'll see other familiar faces, such as Betty Brant and J. Jonah Jameson.

"I read it three weeks ago, and it really lit a fire in me," Holland said of Spider-Man: Brand New Day last year. "Zendaya and I sat down and read it together, and we at times were bouncing around the living room like, ‘This is a real movie worthy of the fans’ respect.’ But there’s a few things we need to figure out before we can get that really going, but it’s exciting."

You can hear more from Roach in the player below.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day shares a title with a divisive era of storytelling, which, thanks to a deal with Mephisto, saw the wall-crawler get a fresh start when his marriage to Mary Jane Watson ended and his identity became secret again. He faced many new sinister foes during that time and was surrounded by a fresh supporting cast, including Mister Negative, Jackpot, Menace, and Carlie Cooper.

In the MCU, all signs point to Spidey teaming up with (and at some point fighting) The Punisher to take on a Savage Hulk, with The Scorpion thrown in for good measure.

Several other villains are reportedly set to appear in the movie, including Tombstone, Tarantula, Boomerang, and Ramrod. There's also been some chatter online about the Symbiote factoring into the story, potentially setting the stage for Mac Gargan to don the alien costume as Venom.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings helmer Destin Daniel Cretton directs Spider-Man: Brand New Day from a script by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers.

Tom Holland plays Spider-Man in a cast that also includes Jon Bernthal (The Punisher), Mark Ruffalo (The Hulk), Zendaya (MJ), Sadie Sink, Michael Mando (The Scorpion), Tramell Tillman, Marvin Jones III (Tombstone), Jacob Batalon (Ned Leeds), and Liza Colón-Zayas. Thunderbolts* star Florence Pugh is expected to return as Yelena Belova.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be released in theaters on July 31, 2026.

Why does Zendaya (MJ) & Jacob Batalon (Ned Leeds) need to be in this? Story should move on this Peter screwed up now he has to live with those consequences of his actions only way for him grow up.

They need to add new characters and focus on them and Peter Parker's next step in life.

@Matador - because they are important characters in the mcu-peter story 🙄

Scratching them would be like a cheap sitcom when they suddenly couldnt afford keeping the cast and they forced a "all new aventures" with a new cast

She could easily be both minor and significant character wise, it need not be that contradictory.

As in be fairly par for the course that she is a recurring background character Peter is still struggling to move on from so repeatedly having Parker see her intentionaly or otherwise if at the same college of still working in a cafe or whatever.

Until a final act when her life is in severe danger due to the main antagonist(s) and saves her life resulting in her finaly remembering who he is breaking the spell as a result anyway (even if both have moved on and have new relationships).

I know many don't like the character but as they went with doing a full trilogy in High School I was fine with them creating an original love interest for Spider-man as in the source he never had much of one till college and she fitted the kinda GF we oft have during our teens prior to finding our true love Gwen Stacey's or Mary Jane's in college or later in life. So what that they opted to give her a similar name to THE MJ when they were never likely at that time to get around to her again at that point when she didn't become his main love interest until after college (as in print years he met Gwen on his first day in college and with her from 65' to 73', his relationship with Mary Jane didn't REALY start until after that even if initialy met just prior to Gwen)

@Apophis71 - agreed

I like the idea of Peter struggling to move on from his old life hence checking up or seeing his gf and best friend from time to time…

Perhaps that’s why he may not have a social life now and is just more or less devoted to being Spider Man until perhaps MJ or someone makes him realize he needs to move on.

@TheVisionary25 - I mean I'd have loved Black Cat in this film but that aside the way I would play it is intro Gwen as her and Peter falling for each other from day one at college but Parker's inability to move on being why he is fully committed to being Spider-man outside of college and resisting asking Stacy out stuck in the friend zone for both.

The last act thus giving the permission structure for the character to fully embrace his first true love from the comics and Zendaya's character no longer feature in the franchise moving forward from this. IF they end up doing a third trilogy only then would I even consider an intro of the actual Mary Jane Watson although I have doubts they'd kill Gwen Stacey AGAIN or cont with Holland after these next three films.

HOPEFULLY by then Disney and Sony will have come to some agreemant and allow us to have the true, original Spider-Woman as annoying the frick out of me NEITHER are currently able to use her due to the prohibitive split on IP rights. I'd have thought Sony cheating by creating their original Jess should have allowed Marvel a way to intro the original Jessica Drew but then with no SHIELD or Hydra since Winter Soldier (outside of AoS anyway)...

Not shocked. She goes to jaded model. Prolly falls for spoiled Flash Thompson or -insert character from Spider-Man lore-, and Ned joins gang.

Peter moniters from a distance, tries to keep them safe... yadda, yadda.

@kseven - She never was Mary Jane so never should have been an issue and as a High School GF prior to Gwen she was great IMO, better than the Raimi way of fast tracking a naff take on the real MJ by having them start their relationship PRIOR to college rather than AFTER.

@kseven - she’s not even a good character she just shows up on set as Zendaya and everyone gets all googly eyed and starstruck

I mean . . . did anyone really think that the primary love interest from the first three movies would just not be in the fourth?

@Clintthahamster - Was hoping she'd get sidelined into a brief cameo in favor of someone like Black Cat or Gwen.

@JustAWaffle - I doubt they ever do Black Cat in live action. Just too obvious of a Catwoman ripoff for the mainstream audience.

I mean , she’s still in the movie and is engaged to the lead of the film so I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s mainly going with him for support hence the outfits given there will be premieres , events etc.

Honestly, I wish both her and Ned weren’t in this and took a movie or 2 to come back but it is what it is now so I hope the character & her integration is done well (regardless of the role being big or small) since I like her performance & iteration of MJ.

Storywise it makes sense, like ir or not those are core characters of the mcu-peter, and something i always hated is how poorly they managed the side characters in other movies (Thor side cast is a total mess, for example)
