Spider-Man: Brand New Day has now been playing in theaters since July 29, but it's still breaking records. While we're waiting on final numbers—it's looking like a $17 million haul—the Sony Pictures/Marvel Studios co-production is set to web up the biggest second Monday of all time, besting previous record-holder Avengers: Endgame by at least +50%.
Today, the wall-crawler's latest solo outing should surpass the entire domestic runs of Titanic, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avatar: The Way of Water to become the seventh highest-grossing movie ever in the U.S. (after just 12 days).
By Wednesday, Spider-Man: Brand New Day will also hit $700 million at the domestic box office, a feat it's likely to achieve in 13 days. Crucially, as of today, it's $38 million ahead of Avengers: Endgame at the same point in its run, despite being only $3 million ahead after its opening weekend last month.
$900 million by the end of its theatrical run is pretty much guaranteed now. However, there's a chance Spider-Man: Brand New Day will ultimately beat Star Wars: The Force Awakens' $936 million record to become the biggest movie ever in the U.S. It's too soon to say for sure, but it seems there's no stopping this one.
How successful is Spider-Man: Brand New Day? Well, here's how it compares to the rest of this summer's biggest movies...
Spider-Man: Brand New Day - $671.3 million
Toy Story 5 - $470.7 million
The Odyssey - $461.4 million
Obsession - $263.3 million
The Devil Wears Prada 2 - $220.6 million
Backrooms - $197.5 million
The Mandalorian and Grogu - $177.7 million
Minions & Monsters - $176.4 million
"I didn’t — for all the reasons I don’t think anyone did, because of COVID, because of the beating that theatrical took for so long," Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige recently replied when he was asked whether Spider-Man: Brand New Day beating Avengers: Endgame's opening weekend came as a surprise. "But once the bar had been raised, it could be raised again, right?"
"The first movie to ever cross $100 million over opening weekend was Sam Raimi’s 'Spider-Man.' The first to cross $150 million in one weekend was Sam Raimi’s 'Spider-Man 3.' The first to $200 million was the first 'Avengers.' And then, of course, the first to $300 million was 'Endgame.'"
"We did think that things could increase, but the past five or six years didn’t necessarily feel like that was the case," he continued. "That’s a long-winded way of saying I did not expect 'Endgame’s' record to be beat, but I couldn’t be happier that it was beat this past weekend by our 38th MCU movie."
How many times have you watched Spider-Man: Brand New Day in theaters?
In Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it's a Brand New Day for Peter Parker. Fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that doesn’t remember him—and the pressure of seeing his old friends move on without him—sparks a change in Peter he may not have the power to control.
But that transformation might also be the only thing that can stop a shocking new threat to the city and those he loves - a powerful villain no one can even see. The world may have forgotten Peter Parker, but he hasn’t forgotten them.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day's cast includes Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando, and Mark Ruffalo.
The movie is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and written by Chris McKenna & Erik Sommers. The film is produced by Kevin Feige, Amy Pascal, Avi Arad and Rachel O'Connor. Executive producers include Louis D'Esposito and David Cain.
