Supergirl Comes Under Fire For AI Usage With Jason Momoa's Lobo Design During Pre-Production

The hits keep coming for Supergirl, which, as well as being one of the biggest superhero movie box office flops ever, is now being criticised for generative AI usage during pre-production.

Supergirl was an unmitigated disaster for DC Studios. While the movie has its fair share of fans, it was a critical failure—52% on Rotten Tomatoes—and one of the biggest superhero movie box office flops ever.

Earlier this month, Supergirl ended its time in theaters with a dismal $125.8 million, making it the lowest-grossing DC movie since 2004's Catwoman. Now, the movie is being criticised on social media after an officially released featurette revealed that AI was used while establishing what Jason Momoa would look like as Lobo.

The video, which was pulled from YouTube by Warner Bros. Discovery mere moments ago as we write this, shows Supergirl director Craig Gillespie discussing various Lobo designs with Momoa. All of them have been created with generative AI and were used to make key creative decisions, if this video is any indication.

Lobo has been appearing in comic books since 1983, when he was created by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen. He's appeared hundreds, if not thousands, of times since then, but DC Studios, or Gillespie, at least, decided that AI was a better way to bring The Main Man to life than comic book artwork or concept artists.

The use of AI may explain why Supergirl looks so drab, as one of the biggest complaints from fans was the lack of colour, despite the movie being inspired by the visually stunning Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic book.

Using AI to design Lobo may have been purely down to Gillespie or a wider problem in DC Studios that this featurette has exposed. It's a little baffling that Warner Bros. Discovery included this in official material for Supergirl, and it will be interesting to see what, if anything, James Gunn and Peter Safran have to say about this.

Supergirl is set to have a lead role in Man of Tomorrow, and there have already been some strong hints that another project is lined up for the Woman of Tomorrow after that (Gunn has alluded to her potentially co-starring in the Wonder Woman reboot). Milly Alcock received widespread acclaim for her performance as Kara Zor-El, so future DCU projects could help redeem the character in the eyes of filmgoers.

"Bad writing, gratuitous cameos, and uninspired visuals take us back to the bad old days of the DCEU in Supergirl, a showcase for the super-talented Milly Alcock, but Kryptonite to anyone who likes good superhero movies," we wrote in one of our reviews.

Supergirl is now available on Digital and arrives on 4K Blu-ray on September 8.

@InfinitePunches - To be fair given the things illustrators and writers have come up with...can't be any worse than using AI at times.

I'm not for generative AI being used as the final product in any creative endeavor, but these quotes are a great example of watching a short clip and then jumping to conclusions about a film that takes years to make.

Why would they even need AI for inspiration? Not only do they have the original comic artwork to go off of, but fan artists have been making stuff of Jason Momoa as Lobo for years at this point. They were not hurting for inspiration.

Omg who gives a fck. People act like they’re not using AI everyday of their lives while on their phones. Was Mamoa AI? No, so who’s gives a fck.

Damn. That's pathetic. Why even publicize this? They literally have the gorgeous imagery from the original comic as concept art. Gillespie prepare to be thrown into a garbage disposal. Scary if Gunn knew about this and scary if he was unaware of it to.

Gotta feel for all the artists watching their career fields diminish and dreams shatter right before their very eyes.

To be fair, if they had spent the money to hire a human being, that'd just be even more that this film lost.

It's shaping up to potentially be the biggest net loss of all time, dethroning the Marvels.

Nobody even cares. It came out, flopped, and was forgotten. Let it rest in peace.

I don't support the use of ai taking the place of jobs (concept artists), nor do I care very much for this movie, but this is about to become the standard across the board, whether a studio is open about it or not.

Hell, didnt disney/marvel just fire the costume designer who headed up most designs since the start of the MCU a few months back? I wonder who is gonna be brainstorming and coming up with new outfit ideas for future MCU films...

Gunn Cultist/Shills & Glazers are quite loosing it right now. Paramount WBD just PROMISED the IMAX Directors Cuts In Theaters. the Ayres, Snyders, Star Wars & Harry Potter....could you imagine the COPE-A-MANIA that will happen if Zack Snyders Rereleased in theaters outsell Gunns DCU......😂

I thought it was good. But it did not make sense to release Supergirl a year after Superman. Lanterns should have been the next film.

I love AI.
Yesterday morning I watched a 30 min AI version on YouTube of Zack Snyder's Justice League part II. It was only part I. However, it was freaking awesome. Yeah, it had its hiccups and the voicing was not perfect. Didn't matter to me. I was glued to it.

Damn , that sucks…

It might be a wider DC Studios issue but I’m leaning towards this being something that the director Craig Gillespie was responsible for tbh and further shows imo how he might not have been the best choice for this project tbh even as someone who has enjoyed some of his previous work such as Fright Night & Cruella.

Overall , I felt the Supergirl movie was “mid” tbh (C+/B-) and largely was carried by Milly Alcock’s Kara who I liked with able supporting turns by Jason Momoa & Eve Ridley but I wish they had a better film around them!!.
