DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has declared that 2021's The Suicide Squad is now officially DCU canon. In doing so, he's arguably created more confusion about a universe that was supposed to be a completely clean break from the DCEU.
For example, Gunn has decided that Idris Elba's Bloodsport, who claimed to have taken Henry Cavill's Superman down with a Kryptonite bullet, actually crossed paths with David Corenswet's Man of Steel.
Questioned about that on Threads, Gunn said the question of whether Robert DuBois sent the hero to intensive care "will be answered." He also clarified that the continuity issue with Kryptonite being gone in the DCU is because Superman is set "two or three years" after The Suicide Squad.
Later, the filmmaker defended his position, saying that when it comes to continuity, he "was asked this shit constantly at Marvel."
The uncertainty surrounding whether Margot Robbie will return as Harley Quinn has left Gunn scrambling to figure out whether The Joker and Harley are active in the DCU. When a fan suggested DC Studios would likely give Harley a fresh start if Robbie doesn't come back, Gunn replied, "Yes, basically. The problem isn't Harley/recasting; it's Harley and her relationship to Joker."
"Harley came about because of her relationship with Joker in most every iteration," he added. "We haven't said the DCU Joker even exists yet, so it backs us into a corner before we start. That's the issue."
Original plans called for The Brave and the Bold to revolve around Batman training his son, Damian, as Robin. It's hard to imagine The Joker not existing in that world, but the movie has been creatively overhauled since being announced at the start of 2023.
Gunn has also reined in expectations for those hoping a Man of Tomorrow trailer will be attached to Dune: Part Three this December. "[It's] expected by whom?" he said, later adding, "More like James not wanting people to be disappointed when there's no trailer in December."
Last December, the first Supergirl trailer was completely overshadowed by the Avengers: Doomsday teasers. With that in mind, Gunn may be hoping to avoid the Man of Tomorrow sneak peek being lost in the shuffle when Dune: Part Three and the next Avengers movie dominate the conversation over the holidays.
In Man of Tomorrow, Superman will be forced to team up with Lex Luthor to battle Brainiac, a threat not just to Metropolis but to the entire world.
Written and directed by James Gunn, the movie stars include David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Lars Eidinger as Brainiac, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag, Sr., Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Milly Alcock as Supergirl.
Andre Royo, Matthew Lillard, Sinqua Walls, and Adria Arjona will also star. There's still no official word on whether the latter is playing Maxima or Wonder Woman, two roles she's repeatedly been linked with since being cast.
Man of Tomorrow arrives in theaters on July 9, 2027.
