Patrick Stewart's X-Men Legacy: Remembering The Iconic Professor X As Kevin Feige And Hugh Jackman Pay Tribute

Sir Patrick Stewart's Professor X became one of superhero cinema's most iconic characters. We look back at his enduring X-Men legacy as Kevin Feige and Hugh Jackman pay tribute to the legendary actor.

When Sir Patrick Stewart first brought Professor Charles Xavier to life in 2000's X-Men movie, no one could have imagined how important his portrayal would become to the superhero genre. Over two and a half decades later, his performance remains the defining element of a franchise that helped change the way audiences viewed comic book adaptations.

With his commanding presence and measured delivery, Stewart became a superhero movie icon. In a franchise that rarely stuck closely to the source material, the actor delivered a comic-accurate take on the mutant hero (albeit with the addition of his natural British accent), making it clear Charles' greatest strength was both his mind and a willingness to believe in both the people who hated him and the students who had every reason to hate the world around them.

Earlier today, the news broke that Stewart has passed away, aged 86. That comes after what his family described as "a brief and poignant journey" with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia. In July, the actor stated he had no intention of retiring amid reports that Avengers: Doomsday would be his final film appearance, and the expectation was that Stewart might return in Avengers: Secret Wars.

In an emotional tribute, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said today, "I’ll never forget the first time I saw Sir Patrick Stewart on the set of the first 'X-Men.' After years of knowing him as the inimitable Captain Picard, I was in awe — and he turned out to be everything I had seen on screen and more: brilliant, charming, warm, generous, with a quiet strength and gravitas."

"Away from the cameras, he was even more remarkable, with a wonderfully sharp sense of humor. It was a true privilege to know him and to work with him," the executive continued. "His legacy lives on not only in decades of extraordinary work, but in the many, many people he mentored. He will be deeply missed."

Stewart's chemistry with Hugh Jackman became especially significant in and beyond the X-Men franchise. While Wolverine's ferocity put him at odds with "Chuck," Xavier recognised the humanity Logan struggled to see in himself. That relationship reached its heartbreaking conclusion in Logan.

In the 2017 blockbuster, Stewart delivered one of his finest performances as an increasingly vulnerable Xavier, whose final journey alongside his one-time "student," gave the character a profoundly human farewell.

Paying tribute to the legendary actor today, Jackman said, "We lost one of the greats of stage and screen today. And, in my book, a tremendous friend and man. I learned so much from him. I will miss you, Patrick Stewart, all of my days."

X-Men: Days of Future Past had already demonstrated the enduring power of Stewart's Professor X, with the older Xavier helping guide a younger version of himself towards a better future. He'd later make a brief return in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as an alternate-universe Xavier who was quickly dispatched by the Scarlet Witch (while his role was brief, he did still delight many fans by finally sitting in Charles' iconic hovering wheelchair).

Now, with Avengers: Doomsday set to feature the late actor alongside familiar X-Men castmates, Stewart's legacy will only be further cemented. He made Professor X more than a powerful mutant or a mentor to a generation of heroes; he made him a symbol of compassion, tolerance, and the belief that even a world consumed by fear and hatred can be changed for the better. That message remains hugely relevant.

Reflecting on the time they spent with Stewart, the Russo Brothers wrote, "We've been lucky enough to work with some of our childhood heroes. And Sir Patrick Stewart will always be one of them."

"A legendary actor with an unmistakeable presence, and an unmatched integrity," Joe and Anthony added. "Thank you for entertaining all of us, sir. And for teaching us humanity, both on and off the screen."

Moving forward, Stewart will remain the definitive Professor X for countless fans. Few actors leave such an indelible mark on a character, and fewer still make that character's ideals feel quite so important beyond the screen. What a legend.

Great quotes from both Feige & Jackman which shows how loved Patrick Stewart was , is and forever will be…

Death doesn’t mean to just be sad and mourn the loss of a life but it also allows us to celebrate one too so here are some clips that truly show how funny & full of life Sir Patrick Stewart was.
