SMALLVILLE Star Tom Welling Reveals He’d Like To Play Batman In James Gunn’s DCU

Tom Welling made a name for himself playing the Man of Steel on Smallville. Now, the actor has said he’d like to play the Dark Knight in James Gunn’s DC Universe.

Tom Welling is arguably the Superman of a generation. While the actor mainly portrayed Clark Kent, and only got to be the full-fledged Man of Steel for small portions of the show, he is, for many, the quintessential depiction of the hero. Welling has been very open about how grateful he is to have played the Big Blue Boy Scout. However, as it turns out, he would also like to step into the tights and boots of another beloved DC character.

Welling, alongside a large portion of the Smallville cast, recently attended a Smallville panel at Comic Con Liverpool. A fan asked the cast what other DC characters they would like to portray in James Gunn's DCU if given the opportunity. Michael Rosenbaum, who played Lex Luthor on the show, immediately started pointing at Welling, seemingly mouthing "Batman." The Clark Kent actor then simply answered: "I mean, Batman," which drew cheers from the crowd.

Then, Aaron Ashmore, who played Jimmy Olsen on Smallville, jokingly asked Welling if he could be his Robin. The actor responded: "I'd fly with you anytime."

This isn't the first time Welling has expressed his desire to take on the role of the Dark Knight. During a 2019 appearance on the Inside of You podcast, he was asked what other DC character aside from Superman he'd like to play in the now-defunct Arrowverse. The actor said his pick would be Batman (via Comicbook.com):

"Yeah, I do like Batman, and I think there is some room to grow there. And, yeah, it would be different."

Interestingly, the actor was a big advocate for featuring Bruce Wayne on Smallville during its run. The show was, unfortunately, not allowed to use the hero, but Welling was so eager to have his Clark Kent and the Dark Knight meet, that he even came up with a fun way to make it happen. Speaking at Terrificon in 2024 (via Screen Rant), Welling explained his pitch for Batman:

"I always thought that we should have had Bruce Wayne pass through somehow. That would have been really cool to see. You know how Clark always got into the Luthor mansion with no problem? But like, if he had gone into Lex's office, and it was just as simple as Lex being like 'Good to meet you, Bruce,' or 'I'll talk to you later, Bruce,' and have him just walk out. I think that would have been cool! But one of the challenges we had is DC movies and DC television don't talk to each other, and it's very difficult as a television show to try to use—it's a big deal, even using the Superman soundtrack."

Though Tom Welling's Clark didn't get to meet Bruce Wayne in live-action, Batman did eventually make his way into the Smallville universe in the Season 11 comic book continuation of the show.

The comics presented a significantly different version of the Dark Knight compared to previous incarnations. He was significantly rougher, wore a heavily armored suit, and his sidekick this time around was Barbara Gordon's Nightwing. Despite being a relatively big departure from the comics, Smallville Season 11's take on the Caped Crusader was an interesting concept that would have fit quite well into the show had he appeared there.

All 10 seasons of Smallville are streaming on HBO Max.

Side note, I just began watching Talk Ville on YouTube, I'm on Season 1 Episode 14, so still super early into the podcast, but over halfway through season 1, and it's an awesome and insightful podcast.

But one takeaway I've gotten from the Podcast is that Tom is kind of..... How do I say this without being mean? Sometimes when he speaks he sounds like someone suffering from a brain injury, and I don't mean that to sound insulting. I'm serious. Sometimes his train of thought is.... Almost like a drunk persons, or someone who has had a brain injury. He just seems kinda.... Slow or something, sometimes.

Him thinking he could play Batman is one of those kinda statements.

@TheVandalore -

I think it's pretty obvious a lot of the Smallville cast knew what she was doing and benefitted from it and platforming her like this really backs that up.

More like Neo 😅

I guess it was better than no suit at all 🤷‍♂️

I really think the show overstayed its welcome. They should have just started to wrap things up in season 7. The plot should have revolved around Luthor killing his dad, faking his death, Clark becoming a hero full time and creating the Clark persona and interviewing different places for jobs, Lois breaking up with green arrow and becoming a journalist who ultimately gets Clark the job, etc. and at least have one episode where Clark wears the Superman suit for the entire finale.

@HulkisHoly - I agree.

I always thought that after Clark the season 5 finale they should have used season 6 to start wrapping up in season 7. Clark stops Zod and begins hunting the zoners. He decides to move toward his destiny on his own, after seeing how Jor-El went silent on him and realizing after the threat of Zod and the zoners that Earth needs a protector.

After he defeats the zoners I thought they should have taken inspiration from Superman Birthright that published 2004, and had Clark leave Smallville. End of SEASON 6 he disappears and travels the world. Looking to make up for the tutelage he lost when the fortress went dead. He returns in season 7 with a purpose. In the meantime, Lois has left Oliver and begun a career as a lowly beat writer at the Daily Planet. Lex kills his dad and his true descent begins. In the meantime, he has made Metropolis his pet project and has become its favorite son. Clark and Lois begin to fall for each other. He gets a job at the planet along with her.

That would have been stellar. And if they wanted to still do Bizarro or or mini doomsday along with Luthor that would have been fine too for me.

Damn near every actor says Batman. But I don't think he every really appreciated Superman. I'm still burned a bit by Welling with his attitude towards the suit, especially in the finale. I think he just didn't want to wear the tights because he thought they were goofy and refused. I think as a result fans suffered. I really enjoyed Smallville especially Season 9 but in all honesty, it just lost its footing. It had a star who was probably ready to exit the show by season 7 or 8 and probably wanted to distance himself as far away from the role as possible. At this point Welling is near 50 and has just really started to appreciate the show. I wish he was able to appreciate it then, when it was fresh and when it meant something.

@YouIknowiamsexy - Because that’s not what the show was about. Hell, he turned down the show, they got him to sign on because they explained to him that it’s about Clark and not Superman. As soon as he puts on that suit, the show is over.

You know I actually would’ve preferred him in the title role over Brandon Routh when they attempted to relaunch the Superman films. I thought he made a fantastic Clark! And I definitely preferred Erica Durance over Kate Bosworth!!! Although given that script that had Clark abandoning Earth and was a deadbeat Dad, I’m not sure anything would’ve helped there.
