SUPERMAN: James Gunn Says "Elseworlds" Means Movie Starring A Black Man Of Steel Could Still Happen

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has finally shared an update about the Superman movie revolving around a Black Man of Steel, confirming it could become a reality despite the fact he's helming Superman: Legacy.

Since DC Studios was formed, a lot of projects fans were looking forward to have been scrapped in preference of a new "Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters" slate of interconnected projects.

That's not necessarily a bad thing, of course, but one of the most highly anticipated movies - a Superman project with a Black Man of Steel - could still happen. Ta-Nehisi Coates wrote that, while Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker director J.J. Abrams was attached to produce.

While very little was ever revealed about the plot, we heard that it was going to be a period piece in the 1930s with a Black Kal-El attempting to find his place on Earth at a time when America was embroiled in racism. It's a fascinating Elseworlds concept and one that may be revisited under DC Studios' watch due to the fact it could become a standalone franchise similar to The Batman

"Those two things are totally unrelated," James Gunn told io9 when asked about this take on the character and his upcoming reboot Superman: Legacy. "That’s an exciting movie. I know that Chantal Nong, who is the executive on that project, is extremely excited about it."

"So if it comes in and it’s great, which I haven’t read the script, and if the timing is right, that could absolutely happen. That’s totally unrelated. It would be an Elseworlds tale like Joker."

While we find it hard to imagine Gunn wanting this Superman movie to overshadow what he has planned for the Man of Tomorrow in Superman: Legacy, we'd say it's possible it happens further down the line and likely sometime after 2025.

After all, the upcoming DCU reboot needs to establish the new Supes as the face of this shared world, but if DC Studios can make audiences understand the difference between these different DC projects, any sort of overlap might not be a major issue (such as The Batman II and The Brave and the Bold coming out in close proximity).

Which of these Superman movies would you most like to see?

As a DC fan I have no faith in Gunn's universe being good. Wish I did but I don't. Every time he says something I lose even more faith.

@WarMonkey - well there’s always the animated universe which has been good so far. The Tomorrowverse that is

@Arthorious - I like some of it but not other parts. Like this recent one where they team with RWBY or whatever wasn't that good imo. I liked the fighting scenes but I don't know anything about that other IP or characters and they didn't really explain anything in the story. Or the last one with the Legion wasn't so great either. I did really like Supergirl the way they made her but the story was kinda iffy an wasn't a fan of the big twist. Man of Tomorrow was great!

@WarMonkey - I hear where you’re coming from. I’ve enjoyed most the latest films in their shared animated universe but with that said there are some definite weak ones: Green Lantern and Supergirls movie in my opinion. Don’t want to spoil it for those who hadn’t seen it but they took some chances that I don’t think paid off well with some of their characters. But I agree Man of Tomorrow was great and I did really enjoy Long Halloween and Justice Society.

@Arthorious - I actually enjoyed the Green Lantern one, did not like the changes but I went with them cause John is my Lantern so I was just happy to see him get a movie.

Just cancel the coates movie and focus on the Michael B Jordan val zod project.

@Origame - They could have so much fun with the concept of Earth-2, but to be honest, I have so little faith in this new take. It seems like we won't have a clean slate, and man, I would really like to have a clear timeline isntead of this fuzzy somethings are canon, some are not, whatever...

@JayBarrick - could've just done Calvin Ellis or Val zod. You know, things that actually give a unique take other than "the superman you know, but people are racist to him for being black".

I had so much respect for Michael b Jordan for leaving the film to make a val zod show, but now that renders this movie completely pointless. So why do it?

@Origame - please God. Coates is a terrible trash human who can't write to save his life.

@JayBarrick - entire clean slate this side of The Suicide Squad. Soooo

Not sure how you're supporting this stance

Just because Superman is black doesn't mean the whole movie has to be some alternate reality about how a superpowered black man changes a racist world.

Just make the main Superman black, if you're gonna do it.

Or don't. I don't care.
