It sounds like we might just see that long-awaited Transformers/G.I. JOE crossover in animation before live-action.

Deadline (via Toonado.com) reports that Robert Kirkman’s Skybound Entertainment has teamed with Hasbro Entertainment to produce an adult animated series based on Kirkman's Image Comics series, Energon Universe, which features characters from Transformers, G.I. JOE, and Void Rivals.

Joe Henderson (Lucifer) is attached to write the adaptation and serve as showrunner on the series, which is expected to be taken out to buyers shortly (given Kirkman's involvement, we'd say there's a decent chance it'll wind up at Amazon).

Despite the more family-friendly tone of the original Transformers and G.I. JOE comics and animated shows, Energon Universe is described as "broad, with adult sensibility in the vein of Kirkman’s gritty adult animated series Invincible."

Other Hasbro-based projects in the works include a Clue series from Sony, Forgotten Realms and Dungeons & Dragons shows with Netflix, a Monopoly film from Lionsgate, a My Little Pony live-action movie at Amazon MGM Studios, and a Power Rangers live-action Disney+ series.

"It's a tremendous honor to be able to reintroduce this world to a new audience under the Skybound banner," Kirkman said when the comic series launched. "I’ve loved these characters for most of my life and to have the opportunity to add to the already rich tapestry Hasbro has built with the all-new Void Rivals is an unbelievable opportunity. If you look at everything done with Transformers and G.I. Joe, you can see the inkling of a vast universe with tremendous potential for crossovers and interaction that will enhance the fan experience while staying true to the individual identities of both concepts. I look forward to exploring that potential for years to come."

Michael Kelly, former Vice President of Global Publishing on Hasbro, added, “When we first discussed the plan for the surprise reveal in Void Rivals #1, I never expected it would be a secret we could keep for over a year. Now that it is finally here, we are all excited to finally be able to talk about all the amazing stories to come from our great new partners at Skybound.”

The events of the last Transformers movie, Rise of The Beasts, gave us a pretty good indication that a live-action crossover was in the pipeline, and last year, we got word that the Robots in Disguise were indeed set to cross paths with the "Real American Heroes" on the big screen.

Towards the end of Rise of the Beasts, our heroes manage to defeat Scourge and the Terrocons, but the threat of Unicron still looms. With Optimus Prime and the other Autobots unable to return home, Noah (Anthony Ramos) moves on with his life and lands a new job at a security firm.

There, he encounters the mysterious Agent Burke (Michael Kelly), who hands him a business card with the G.I. Joe logo on it. Burke makes it clear that he wants to recruit Noah and his Autobot pals into this top-secret organization, telling him, “We’re in the middle of an ongoing war.”

Though this project may still be in development, there's a chance that the recent news that Michael Bay is planning to return to direct another Transformers movie could have thrown a spanner in the works.

Lots of potential here!

@PC04 - I’m very excited about this, too. I wonder where this will air? They have to use the comics as a guide and remain faithful to both series and characters. If done well, this could be better than a film team up.

@Bucky74 - The only thing that could make this better is if GI JOE's come back as the 12" figures now. I love those!

@PC04 - The ones that had that Kung-fu grip action?

@PC04 - I grew up on the awesome 3 and a quarter inch figs but I get you. The accessories were incredible with those. And too bad I played with my toys. If I would have kept many of my Joes and Transformers in the packaged they’d be worth a fortune today!

@Matador - Scarlett and Lady Jay always triggered my “Kung Fu grip”. I kid

@PC04 - I'm more of 3'75 inch figures small easily stored but the vehicles that's where they shined the most loved building them as a kid, stickers were bitch though.

@Bucky74 - Those were better. I remember playing with my friend that had the carrier and jets. Hard to fit a 12' figure in there. Hard to make room in a kid's room too.

Nice, but rather have a live action film finally.

@Linux1172 - animation will be so much more hardcore and than a budget limited live action, that will be filled with a buncha stupid one liners and cheesy ass characters.

@Linux1172 - I’d love a live action team up film but, honestly, aside from using Peter Cullen, there’s not much those films did right

Ugh, can’t we just get a separate GI Joe cartoon based off Larry Hama’s run? Transformers and GI Joe have never meshed well. Normal soldiers sort of become obsolete when there are giant killer robots roaming around.

supermanrex - 10/23/2025, 9:39 AM
@soberchimera - they seem to mesh just fine if you read the comics right now. normal humans fight godzilla and kong and shit and it seems to work all these years. robotech anyone??

@soberchimera - I'm pretty hyped about this announcement, but also, yes, a more grounded series based on Hama's run would be much more up my alley.

soberchimera - 10/23/2025, 10:04 AM
@supermanrex - They’re strong enough separately, no need for a crossover straight out of the gate.

@soberchimera - This comic universe they've built is quite possibly the absolute best thing going in comics right now. Its fantastic. The potential here is off the charts.

@CorndogBurglar - im worried that corporate is going to try to have them connect with little kids, and ultimately suck the badass out of the spike, carly and sparkplug and turn them into annoying whiney caricatures who constantly say cool, or awesome, rad or other stupid shit to be more kid friendly.

@supermanrex - What Hasbro is ignoring is that movie is gonna need massive domestic support, which it may or may not get depending on nostalgia and other factors. The US is not a popular place right now. As GTIS frequently puts it, it's the American Empire.

I'm curious how you make this TV-MA? Just see decepticons fully stomping people out? lol I'm not complaining, could be dope. Would just seem weird to have swearing or nudity in it.

@JabbaTheSus - The comics are pretty brutal.

Duke had his own mini-series before the actual GI Joe series launched and it gave a backstory of him.

In it, he was flying a jet (Skystriker) on a random patrol with his wingman and they came across Starscream out of no where. Starscream transformed into a robot, shot down Duke's wingman, and when he ejected, Staracream grabbed him in his hand and just squashed him into guts like a bug.

This gave Duke a case of Post Tramatic Stress, but also put him on a mission to find out what he actually saw, which leads him to learn the government actually knows exactly what Starscream is.

This is what you can expect. The comics aren't for kids. Humans die and the deaths matter. Just in the early issues we already had a couple Joes buy the farm. And big name Joes. There are actual stakes.

@CorndogBurglar - Fair enough that actually sounds dope. Looking forward to seeing this then. Didn't know there was a comic series that's already in this tone (yes I was victim to just reading the headline and commenting lol)

Sweet , sounds cool imo!!.

However, I do wonder how this will be structured since the Energon universe storylines are told across various comic series but this seems like it will be one big show which could get messy given the intricate & complex storytelling and scope so hopefully it turns out well.

Anyway , I’m glad to see Joe Henderson be involved especially as a fan of Lucifer and the other shows he’s worked on such as Almost Human & White Collar (he’s also written a couple of original comic series aswell) so him being writer and showrunner gives me hope for this so far if/when it happens!!.

@supermanrex - the comics have a similar tone to how they are describing this show so I don’t see it changing.

@TheVisionary25 - oh yeah i read the comics and love the hell out of them. but we all know how corporate likes to step in and try to sell action figures and shit. put some slapstick silliness in it too. were gonna have you rewrite this poignant scene and throw a couple fart jokes in there. the kids will love those jokes and go buy the toys.

Whenever I think of Transformers & GI Joe , I think of Prime & Renegades even though the 2 shows never crossed over but those were my jam!!.

@bkmeijer1 - Bro, you should really read the comics. Its a fantastic world they've built. Start with Void Rivals. Then there 5 mini-series of GI Joe characters that set the stage and shows the rise of Cobra.

There's Duke, Scarlet, Destro, and Cobra Commander mini-series. I think I'm forgetting one also. Then it kicks off the GI Joe series. Its all fantastic and overlaps.

Definitely worth tracking it down and giving it a read.

CorndogBurglar - 10/23/2025, 11:39 AM
@bkmeijer1 - Void Rivals kind of kicks it all off and is an interesting story. Inwas surprised how much I liked it.

All of these series' are available in trade paperbacks or they're even on multiple digital comic sites.

@CorndogBurglar - I'll go for digital, because physical copies are hard to get at a reasonable price where I leave
