Lanterns wrapped up its first season this past Sunday amid mixed reactions - and record-breaking ratings.

According to Nielsen and internal numbers from Warner Bros. Discovery, the finale, "Dirt and Stars," brought in 10.5 million viewers globally and 7.2 million viewers in the U.S. across three days of cross-platform viewing.

With the full season averaging 19.3 million viewers globally, these numbers mark an all-time high both worldwide and in the U.S., cementing the DC Studios superhero show's spot among the top five HBO series launches in platform history.

Lanterns still hasn't been officially renewed for a second season, but a new writing team has been assembled in anticipation of the greenlight. Chris Mundy is expected to return as showrunner, without writers Damon Lindelof and Tom King. Vanessa Baden Kelly will be back, along with new scribes Christopher Cantwell, Nakkiah Lui, Zack Whedon, and Selwyn Seyfu Hinds.

Mundy recently revealed that some ideas for a second season have been discussed, and it sounds like Lanterns will continue to be a primarily Earth-based series.

"It’s like we’ve tossed out a lot of different things. I mean, again, we want to treat it all—you know, we won’t be back in Rushville most likely unless something crazy happens in Rushville, you know, every 10 years. But you’re going to—it’s going to be an Earth-based story that we continue most likely."

"I mean, would you—we’ve shown that you can leave the planet, so that’s good, right?" he added. "But because of that, we want to make whoever’s here as sort of grounded and real as possible. Our idea was just to ground everything and then layer on the other layers." The writer continued, "But it’s just like, okay, are you with us? Great. Now we can expand. And it’s the same thing with introducing all the other Lanterns and stuff."

HBO in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios. The pilot episode is co-written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, who are co-creators for the series. Mundy serves as showrunner. The first two episodes are directed by James Hawes, with Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Alik Sakharov also tapped to direct. The series is executive produced by Mundy, Lindelof, James Gunn, Peter Safran, King, Ron Schmidt, and Hawes. Based on the DC comic characters from Green Lantern.

The series stars Kyle Chandler, Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Laura Linney, Jason Ritter, Ulrich Thomsen, Nathan Fillion, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones.

The series follows new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

The most watched seasons of TV ever include GOT Season 7 and 8 and Stranger Things Season 5. Who gives a shit? The most sold games every year are copy and paste ball and gun games.

Reboot the MCU and DCU

People only watched the finale in the hopes that we'd actually get some giant green fist punching things. But all we got was a hologram, to go along with a green bird, dollar bill, drill, and some force fields. And a ring that nobody could be bothered to charge. Lame.

Mixed reactions. Oh boy. That’s funny.

@CAPTAINPINKEYE - It has the lowest scores in the DCU next to Supergirl. It's objectively divisive.

Looks like despite all the whining about race a lot of people actually LOVED the show. On to season 2

@soleavenger - Watching something doesn't automatically mean loved. The series is objectively divisive and shit

I am disappointed that Hal seems to be dead ("with hope"). But I would love to see another season of Lanterns. The characterizations for Hal and John weren't perfect, but the writers did a better job of lifting them from the page than Marvel did with: No anger issue - Hulk, Goofball comic relief - Thor, Iron Man mentor to - Spiderman, Zero personality - Taskmaster, Comic punchline - Mandarin, and let's not forget M.O.D.O.K.
If we are comparing characterizations, Lanterns is more connected to the comics than any of those Disney creations.

Ultimately, I think they are switching Hal and John's story, building up to John becoming Parallax.
Let's Go!

@Baf - Yeah, we weren't comparing. Who cares about Marvel?

I want to see DC characters adapted well. Tell whatever story you want, but keep the characters personalities in tact. Or else why not just come up with new characters? 10 out of 13 of the characters in the show aren't even DC characters anyway.

And what are we left with going forward? No Hal Jordan? And a John Stewart who uses a ring powered by fear and isn't even a part of the Corps?

Lindelof and King wrote the season two writers into a corner where they literally cannot adapt any GL comics at all, and then they took their paycheck and quit!

I know they said they’ll keep it grounded but I really hope with this season’s success they increase the budget so we can get more constructs and aliens NOT disguised as humans

@Kahron0 - he also said they’ll expand now that they’ve got the attention, so grounded seems to mean more earth based than not have aliens stuff

Lets be honest, the reason they want to keep this "grounded" is because the last GL live action we got, didn't do so well. Also because the believe in "superhero fatigue". Don't get me wrong the show was ....good to me. The performances were the highlight. Still, GL are "space cops". My main thing is, every alien threat that John will encounter, will be in human form? Because that will get old, real quick.

A fine addition to the DCU. Loved the cast and dynamic. Looking forward to Season 2
