STRANGER THINGS Season 5, Vol. 2 Spoilers: Duffer Bros. On Big Will Reveal And What To Expect From The Finale

Stranger Things creators The Duffer Brothers explain how they approached another big Will moment in Season 5, Vol. 2, and tease their plans for December 31st's feature-length finale.

Stranger Things Season 5, Vol. 2 arrived on Netflix yesterday evening, and confirmed that the Upside Down is really a wormhole that connects the real world to Veca's Abyss. If exploded, it will collapse, giving the show's heroes one last dangerous mission heading into the feature-length finale on December 31.

Meanwhile, Eleven saves her "sister," Kali, and Max finally wakes up in the real world, leaving young Holly a roadmap to plot her own escape from Vecna's world.

Perhaps the biggest moment in these three latest episodes is when Will comes out as gay to his friends and family. Following his emotional confession, the teenager decides to return to the Upside Down with Eleven, so that they can collapse the wormhole and put an end to Vecna's dastardly plans.

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter (via SFFGazette.com), creators and showrunners Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer discussed Will's big moment in "The Bridge."

"I just know it took forever," Matt said of writing the scene. "Originally, it was just going to be him coming out to his mom, and then we felt it needed to be more than that and that it needed to involve his friends. We worked on that for a while with just Joyce [Winona Ryder], and it just never felt right. So, once we involved the friends, it started to click a little bit more into place."

"I don’t recall exactly how long it took. I just remember it taking quite a long time, and then being nervous when we showed it to Noah. Because so much of it is close to what he’s been through, but, also he knows Will so well," he continued. "So it had to be truthful for him on two fronts. And so the fact that it resonated with him was great, and then we felt so much relief, and the pressure kind of went onto Noah."

As for how they're keeping the finale's biggest secrets under wraps, Matt said, "Well, we didn’t shoot multiple endings. I don’t know how anyone has the time to do something like that just to trick people. But we had a really good security team, and they did their best to keep the paparazzi away. The finale script was printed on red paper, but just the finale, because it’s annoying to get red scripts."

While the stage has been set for some potential casualties in the last stand against Vecna, Matt doesn't want fans to worry too much about characters like Hopper and Steve. However, he's also not discounting some emotional farewells as this story finally reaches its end.

"It’s not Game of Thrones. We’re not in Westeros. I love Game of Thrones, but it’s just a very different type of show than that. There’s not going to be a Red Wedding situation," the writer confirmed. "I think some things happen in the finale that are very surprising, but we’re not trying to shock or upset anyone."

"I hope by the time people get to the end of the finale that it just feels like there’s something inevitable about what happens, and that it doesn’t feel painful but feels satisfying. We’ll see. But as for Steve’s fate. I don’t know. I can’t say. It would be the next logical step. He keeps getting beaten up more and more. The only way we could take it further is death," Matt added with a laugh.

Elsewhere in the interview, the duo discussed their imminent plans to leave Netflix for Paramount, but reaffirmed that they'll remain attached to the Stranger Things franchise. A live-action spin-off is in the early stages of development, set in "a different decade [with] different characters."

Ross explained, "It’s an idea we’ve had for years and something we’re just really excited and passionate about. We won’t be showrunning that show, but we’ll be heavily involved. So, as the new year comes around, we’re going to start spending more time on that. Hopefully it’s something announced soon-ish."

Hollywood is so washed. Why is this such a big moment in the context of a demonic black hole.

Hollywood is obsessed with sexuality to the point real story beats get pushed to the back burner.

@ComicPundit - Felt the same

I was waiting for someone to say I don't care but no

@ComicPundit - Probably because it is showing those that feel they can’t come out that you can do, that people are accepting and it’s a big moment. Looking at the neanderthals commenting similar dismissive nonsense like yourself here it shows that this message is still important as you lot just can’t accept these things and is why the message is repeated. Get over your bigotry, let people be happy who they are then you won’t need to be told the same thing again and again. Isn’t difficult to get, right!?

@Miiol - You have a black hole that is a portal to Vecna and all the ramifications of that and a character thinks their coming out is somehow important in that context.

The world is not obsessed with sexuality like Netflix is. The gay character coming out is now passe because it has been done to death.

Willow, Agatha All Along, etc. and an endless stream of the gayness of a character hijacking the progression of those stories.

I repeat - most people are not obsessed with sexuality like that. That's not bigotry to reject Netflix's agenda...

@Miiol -Or....maybe folks are just tired of media pushing of a fudge packer coming out as some type of special thing in the year 2025.

@jst5 -

Its wild to me that you have an avatar of Superman, yet you talk about people the way you do. I dont understand how people like you idolize heroes, good guys, and yet you let none of that influence your character as a human being.

I agree that this scene was unnecessary and slowed down the pacing, but the way youre talking is disgusting, you're an absolute embarrassment to everything a character like Superman stands for. Do better.

@CrimmLives03 - You mean an avatar of a straight white dude with an American flag in the background?

@jst5 - went with fudge packer, glorious. I prefer "Pillow Biter", just because it's a funny visual image. However, when we saw the Halloween reboot and the scene with the gay pirates came on, my wonderful wife turned to me and said, "Those are butt pirates", in an exaggerating gay accent. Ever since then, I've liked that one as well. All in all, the gays have some wonderful terms that can be applied to them. Kudos for busting out fudge packer.

@ComicPundit - agreed. So dumb. And I feel like every time someone “comes out,” Josh here loves to report it as if there is something so special about people who like wiping poop on themselves. Gross!!
ProLife
ProLife - 12/26/2025, 3:46 PM
@CrimmLives03 - he is talking about their “behavior,” not them as a human being. It is gross to promote people who like wiping poop on themselves as if simply doing something means it is normal. There is nothing special about someone “behaving “ sexual. I came out as being sexually attracted to natural blonde blue eyed girls who are short. Not giving me the same special attention and recognition is sexism and discrimination. I demand a parade so everyone knows, a tv show about my life choices, to have kids wave a flag and celebrate my sexual choices, to push corporations to hire people like me who finds natural blondes attractive, demand schools lose federal money if they don’t celebrate. At least me being sexually attracted to the opposite sex is normal and what humanity intended.
ProLife
ProLife - 12/26/2025, 3:49 PM
@jst5 - don’t let these nuts bully you into accepting an unnatural sexual choice. I love how they want to claim superman is all about anything goes. Whatever “feels” goid, just do it. They don’t speak for him. These are the same people who hate the saying, truth, justice, and the “American “ way.

@ComicPundit - It matters to queer people. Also, Vecna was using that fear against him and now he can't anymore. This was about going into the fight with a clear head. It was also a scene the fans have been waiting for since episode one.

JackDeth
JackDeth - 12/26/2025, 10:48 PM
@ComicPundit - Since you're obviously not queer, it doesn't matter to you. That's fine. 10% of the fans are queer and 80% of the fans support the LGBTQ community. Representation matters and it was done organically and respectfully to the community. Sorry it bothered you.
ElBlancoChoco

It was the worst scene in season 5.

What should’ve been underplayed became over-written, over-wrought sentimentality. That’s par for the course with this series but they turned it up to 11 (pun intended).

The rest is mostly good though.

maxx
maxx - 12/26/2025, 12:48 PM
@Mongrol - agreed, the writers made the scene a set piece and it ended up being contrived and over the top instead of just an organic character beat.
