Warner Bros. has dropped new footage from the upcoming Mortal Kombat sequel, giving fans a clearer look at the film’s greatly-expanded lineup of fighters.

In addition to familiar faces, the preview showcases newcomers like Jade, Quan Chi, and Shao Kahn, signaling a broader, more intense conflict ahead.

One notable shift, however, is the addition of one more newcomer to the sequel, Karl Urban’s Johnny Cage, who has taken center stage in the sequel's marketing. That approach marks a notable departure from the games, where Liu Kang traditionally serves as the central protagonist.

Recently, director Simon McQuoid stated, "The thing we wanted to embrace was the outrageous nature of Mortal Kombat. I got better at seeing that as an advantage. Then we amplify things, so that we carve out our own unique space in the greater cinematic landscape...It’s really easy for something like this to slide into the ridiculous, and then you don’t care as much. I hope the scope of the film comes from how audiences feel about the characters, having a deeper connection with them. My hope was to do a better job than I did on the first one in that respect."

Mortal Kombat 2 was initially set to hit theaters on October 24, 2025, but Warner Bros. Discovery ultimately pushed the release back following an unexpectedly strong year at the box office in 2025. The film now hits North American theaters on May 8, 2026.

From New Line Cinema comes the latest high-stakes installment in the blockbuster video game franchise in all its brutal glory, Mortal Kombat II. This time, the fan favorite
champions—now joined by Johnny Cage himself—are pitted against one another in the ultimate, no-holds barred, gory battle to defeat the dark rule of Shao Kahn that threatens the very existence of the Earthrealm and its defenders.

Karl Urban stars as Johnny Cage, alongside Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Tati Gabrielle, Lewis Tan, Damon Herriman, with Chin Han, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han, and Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi and Scorpion.

Director Simon McQuoid returns to helm the follow up to his explosive 2021 cinematic adventure, from a screenplay by Jeremy Slater, based on the videogame created
by Ed Boon and John Tobias. The film is produced by Todd Garner, E. Bennett Walsh, James Wan, Toby Emmerich and Simon McQuoid, and executive produced by Michael Clear, Judson Scott, Jeremy Slater, Ed Boon and Lawrence KasanoV.

Joining McQuoid behind the camera are director of photography Stephen F. Windon, production designer Yohei Taneda, editor Stuart Levy and costume designer Cappi Ireland, with casting by Rich Delia and music by Benjamin Wallfisch.

New Line Cinema Presents an Atomic Monster/Broken Road Production, a Fireside Films Production, Mortal Kombat II. The film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, only in theaters and IMAX® across North America on May 8, 2026, and internationally beginning 6 May 2026.

Bring it… I might be the only one, but I actually really enjoyed the first one! The mid 1990’s were fun, but the PG-13 hurt the bloody violence which made the games so fun. I want over the top bloody violence!
