X-Men: Will Poulter, Harris Dickinson, And More Have Auditioned To Play The MCU's Professor X

With Marvel Studios seemingly closing in on its Professor X for the upcoming X-Men reboot, a list of the actors who have auditioned to play the MCU's Charles Xavier has been revealed.

While we may be only days away from the X-Men cast being officially unveiled, could the MCU's Professor X be revealed before then? Yesterday evening, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Christopher Abbott (Wolf Man) and Tom Pelphrey (Iron Fist) are among those who have tested for the role of Charles Xavier.

The latter is out of the running, though no clear favourite for the X-Men's leader has emerged. Now, Knight Edge Media has named five actors who have auditioned for the reboot's Professor X.

The first few are familiar to us: Abbott, Pelphrey, and Bill Skarsgård (It: Welcome to Derry). However, two more contenders are now in the mix, with Will Poulter (The Bear) and Harris Dickinson (The King's Man) also said to have auditioned.

This comes after reports that one of the potential Professor X actors had previously starred in an MCU project; as a reminder, Poulter played Adam Warlock in 2023's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. With James Gunn unlikely to return to that franchise and no known plans in place to revisit the team, it seems Warlock will be a one-and-done for Poulter if he ends up playing Charles.

Daniel Richtman has backed up the report after previously reporting that Skarsgård and Pelphrey are out of the running. Abbott seems to be the current frontrunner, but Poulter or Dickinson (another unexpected possibility) could still beat him to the part.

Marvel Studios and filmmaker Jake Schreier are clearly seeking a younger Professor X, given that Abbott is 40, Poulter is 33, and Dickinson is 30. The MCU's Charles clearly won't be an old man, and he may not even be wheelchair-bound if the reboot takes inspiration from the more proactive version of the character seen in the X-Men's Krakoan Age.

In related news, @MyTimeToShineH is reporting that Logan and Deadpool & Wolverine star Dafne Keen is in talks to return as X-23. It's unclear whether that's for Avengers: Secret Wars, Deadpool 4, or X-Men.

So far, the cast of the X-Men reboot includes Kit Connor as Scott Summers, Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, and Samara Weaving as Emma Frost. Adam Driver is playing the movie's villain, and while the Magneto rumours have been debunked, it seems he's either Mister Sinister or Sebastian Shaw.

If Driver ends up playing the latter, we can likely expect a Chris Claremont-inspired tale that pits the X-Men against the Hellfire Club.

"They have come in and are working on a draft right now, which is really, really exciting to be able to put that group of people together again," Schreier previously said of X-Men writers Sonny Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo. "I also think just having the time to kind of sit back, and I’ve just been digging into so many of the old comics and the entire Claremont run."

"[I'm] going through stuff and really trying to think about what can we do well that feels new and feels different, and that hasn’t been done well before? Obviously, there’s such an incredible cinematic tradition of these comics, but what can we do? And how can we put our own spin on what that is?" the filmmaker added.

X-Men is currently expected to be released in theaters in 2028.

Will Poulter certainly has the right eyebrows for the good professor.

Charles Xavier is one of the few characters where I really can’t think of someone who would be a good fit that’s an established actor

I guess there are not enough actors available in the US for Marvel and that's why they need to continuously bring back people who have already played a different role in the MCU?

@SethBullock - And him auditioning is basically saying that Adam Warlock is done going forward.

They need someone with Stewart's temperament. Confident but calm. Didn't like James in the role. Seemed to overact at times. Fassbender was great though.

@hue66 - Think about it this way: James played him as a younger, more brash version than the older, wiser Stewart one

Wasn't there a rumor, Marvel Studios already picked an actor for Professor X, and the person had already worked for Marvel in another role? I read that before hearing Will Poulter was up for the role. I don't think we're ever seeing Adam Warlock again since I think Kevin Feige is moving past James Gunn's contributions and recreating Guardians if they ever show up again. In my mind, Will is a consideration now, if the rumor is true. Will's 33 years old, about a decade older than the actors they're hiring for the X-Men team. If Marvel Studios is going that young, we're probably getting a very different Professor X than what we're used to. At this point, I'm even conceiving a Professor X with psionic ability and uses the ability to walk around. It makes it interesting how young they might be making Magneto. My dream of retconning MCU Wanda & Pietro back to Magneto's kids is probably ruined now.

@String - I hope not. Maybe after Secret Wars, it’s all retconned somehow. They also must address Jean being so brutal in BND and get her to the Jean we all know and love as soon as possible
String
String - 8/8/2026, 12:48 PM
@Bucky74 - I think I saw a breakdown of Brand New Day that showed the old guy that got hit by a vehicle in the film shows up alive in one of the stills that closed the film. I haven't seen Brand New Day again yet, but if that break down is true, I think it's Marvel's attempt to already start redeeming Jean. After Secret Wars, and the Earth is reformed, I think Marvel is washing all the sins characters like Jean and Wanda have done in previous films away. THIS Jean and the way she's interpreted does make her far more dangerous and believable once the Phoenix takes over. But I hope Marvel Studios stays away from that story until the Sh'lar, Starjammers and the Hellfire club are all introduced. Marvel can't adapt Phoenix too early if they want to keep Sadie around for the next decade and a half.

@String - okay, that is one of the hundreds of people she killed. What about the rest?

I enjoyed Brand New Day a lot… but they massacred her character.

Sure, they could handwave it away by saying “oh, she didn’t actually kill anyone” but then that makes Spidey and everyone else really stupid in hindsight for not noticing that. Based on how afraid everyone was, she was definitely killing people in their eyes.

@String - The Phoenix story has already been done (and fumbled) twice. They need to stay away from that for a long long time. They can drop hints over the course of several movies, but they have to give the character other things to do and really build her up, and make audiences love her. That way, if / when it does happen, it's truly tragic. Since Spider-man already has her as the villain, she needs to seriously redeem herself before going down that road. I think Sadie sink is capable of doing it, it just depends on the material she's given and how much they try to rush to get there. Her redemption arc should be long and difficult for her. If we see her sincerely struggling against her base instincts, when she finally loses to them, it's painfully sad rather than just inevitable.

They’d be wise not to stray too far from the original concept with very minimal updates. Magneto MUST be a Nazi camp survivor. They can either go with a secondary mutation that slows his aging (easy, but works) or have him chosen Bucky style at some point.

@Bucky74 - “frozen”
String
String - 8/8/2026, 12:56 PM
@Bucky74 - In my head canon, Secret Wars jumbles everything up including Magneto, coming from a world (like the Fantastic Four) that is still stuck in a 50s or 60s aesthetic. Which makes WWII 10 or 20 years ago to Magneto. Or Magento comes from an Earth that the Nazi's won WWII, and Magneto lived under Nazi occupation in his present. There are so many possibilities because of Secret Wars. But I agree with you Magneto's comic history needs to be preserved. Marvel has the opportunity to preserve it with Secret Wars. I just hope they do.

String
String - 8/8/2026, 1:11 PM
@gambgel - I don't take anything seriously unless it comes from a trade. I just look at the rumors and when something clicks, I speculate. In this case, the rumor coming from a pundit suggesting Marvel picked a Professor X who has already played a Marvel role fits for Will Poulter. That seems to come from someone with knowledge. So, I'm just playfully speculating at the moment. I mean, when pundits were saying Cooper Hoffman was in 'talks' for Cyclops & practically every pundit was running with that rumor, that seriously made me sick, since Cooper is not the actor I expected for Scott. I'm so glad that rumor was wrong and exaggerated. Anyhow, I'm not advocating for Will and not advocating against him. I can see the vision if true like I couldn't with Cooper. Speculation can be fun like putting together a puzzle.

Assuming they keep Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova, I could see Sturridge as her twin brother...

...I did NOT buy her as being a twin brother to James McAvoy and Patrick Stewarts version of Xavier.

Skarsgard could probably pull off Sinister, but out of all the names mentioned, Tom Pelphrey as Xavier would be good.

What next? X-23 older than Profesor X?
Those rumors are dumber than dumb.
If Cyclops and Jean are 20 yo, than X-23 should be under 10.
Actor playing Xavier shouldn't be under 40.
