It's been a wild couple of days for Warner Bros. Now, with Paramount set to oust current film chiefs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy from the newly named "Skydance," the duo's bet on Tom Cruise isn't set to pay off.
The news that they'd managed to bring him to Warner Bros. after a lengthy partnership with Paramount sent shockwaves through the industry, but Digger—which has a reported $160+ million production budget—is set to bomb this weekend.
According to Deadline, the movie is eyeing a disappointing $10 million opening weekend in North American theaters. Digger only made $4 million on Friday, $1.2 million of which came from Thursday previews. Word of mouth isn't likely to help this one, even with a 71% score on Rotten Tomatoes' Popcornmeter (in contrast, it has a "Rotten" 51% from critics).
Digger's CinemaScore is a dismal C+. As a reminder, CinemaScore is a market research firm that surveys audience reactions to newly released movies.
After attending opening night screenings, moviegoers rate films on an A+ to F scale, providing insights into audience satisfaction. Widely used in the film industry, CinemaScore helps gauge the initial reception of movies and influences box office predictions based on audience feedback.
Verity has also been awarded a C+, but grossed $14.5 million on Friday after earning $4.5 million from previews. Now, the Colleen Hoover adaptation is on track to make $32 million this weekend, despite a terrible 34% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Resident Evil is eyeing $11.5 million for second place, and while Avengers Endgame: Encore will slip down the charts behind The Heart of the Beast ($10.3 million), Primetime ($7.6 million), and Forgotten Island ($6.5 million), it's still eyeing a decent $6 million haul.
A re-release like that being very front-loaded isn't a surprise, and with an expected running cume of $37.8 million by Sunday, Avengers: Endgame is closing in on $900 million in the U.S. with $896.1 million so far. As we told you yesterday, the movie is expected to overtake Avatar at the worldwide box office to once again become the biggest movie ever.
"Avengers: Endgame is a masterpiece which not only delivers on every expectation you had but exceeds ones you didn't even think about," we wrote in our review of the re-release. "This isn't just a movie; it's an experience and one that only gets better for its Encore."
Avengers Endgame: Encore and all the titles mentioned here are now playing in theaters.
