Clayface Box Office Update: DCU Horror Movie Gets A Boost From Discount Tuesday

Clayface has passed $50 million worldwide, but can the DCU horror movie turn a profit? One box office analyst questions whether choosing the R-rated release as the DCU's third feature was the right move.

Clayface opened in North American theaters this past weekend, earning $24 million in the process. Now, all eyes are on the DC Studios movie's second weekend to see whether positive word of mouth will boost ticket sales and turn the DCU body horror into an Obsession-sized hit.

After earning $2.2 million on Monday, Clayface grossed $3.3 million during Discount Tuesday, taking its domestic cume to a reported $29.7 million.

This is a better result than movies like Kraven the Hunter ($1.3 million) and Other Mommy ($2.9 million), but behind Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) ($3.4 million).

Clayface has surpassed $50 million worldwide. However, it's believed the movie will need to gross as much as two or three times that to break even and turn a modest profit. That's why Halloween weekend is so important for the third DCU feature.

Exhibitor Relations Co. recently addressed Clayface's opening weekend, explaining that a $46 million debut on a $44 million production budget is "not awful." However, the outlet's Jeff Bock then added, "[It] will need to stick around a while to see a cut of the profits."

"Thing is, [Warner Bros.] isn’t mining one of the world's biggest IP libraries simply to break even. It wants a piece of the pop-culture pie. Other Mommy, also R-rated original with zero built-in IP, opened higher: $27M domestic & now $95M worldwide, on a $19M budget. And it did that with a D+ CinemaScore."

"Clayface may eventually turn a box office profit," Bock continued. "But that still doesn’t mean choosing it as the DCU’s third feature was the right move. Cost containment is not cultural momentum. And that's what [Warner Bros.] thought it was getting [by] hiring James Gunn."

In Clayface, Matt Hagen’s meteoric rise from Gotham street kid to Hollywood leading man is tragically cut short when a local crime boss’s actions leave him horribly disfigured. Abandoned by his team and with nothing left, Matt seeks out a cutting-edge treatment that miraculously returns him to his former self, but also unexpectedly affects his grip on reality, spiralling him down a destructive path of all-consuming revenge.

The movie stars Tom Rhys Harries in the title role of the "cult-favourite" villain from Gotham's rogues' gallery. The cast includes Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan, as well as Nancy Carroll and Joshua James.

We concluded our Clayface review by saying, "Tom Rhys Harries shines in Clayface, an uninspired and unoriginal movie that's too light on horror and lacking in comic book personality to be anything but forgettable. It should have been a game-changer for the genre; instead, it's DC's Morbius moment."

Directed by James Watkins from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, Clayface is now playing in theaters.

It was a terrible move.

@Irregular - terrible is doing some heavy lifting with that statement. Just say you don't care for certain things. Doesn't mean they're bad because YOU didn't like them. Convincing the majority is all that matters. Literally everything except Supergirl is overwhelmingly beloved and that movies was okay just like the mid Ant-Man movies and 70% of the MCU

@bobevanz - A movie can be good and still be a terrible strategic decision. Especially since it does little to build momentum when DC prioritizes niche characters over more recognizable properties. And declaring everything beloved doesn't prove the strategy is working. You're busy defending the movies that you can't distinguish between quality and franchise management. That's the point, not whether you personally enjoyed them.

It's okay, we all know how deep you go for Gunn.

@Irregular - What if the movie wasnt made to build momentum but just to tell a story that happens to be in the DC universe? Everything doesnt have to lead to something so maybe we are overhyping the expectations of what these movies are supposed to do. Maybe IT IS a good strategic move to establish that DC can produce a variety of different movies with their characters that arent super heroes? This movie paves the way for a rated R Swamp Thing and other obscure characters that dont necessarily have to cost a ton to make. IMO the move was brlliant because you DONT want to be the MCU.

@krayzeman - That's called creative freedom when the criticism is about franchise strategy. Nobody said every movie needs to set up another movie, but when launching a new cinematic universe, it requires some form of building so audiences can be willing to invest in. Like "WOW WE CAN MAKE DIFFERENT MOVIES GUYS!" is a creative take, not proof that prioritizing Clayface was a smart decision. Hell even Mike Flanagan thought they would use his script for later and not so soon like Gunn wanted because he was thinking "creatively" and not thinking whether it was a smart idea for DCU as a whole.

And the MCU comparison is a bullshit dichotomy. You can avoid Marvel's formula without abandoning the need to build mainstream interest. Being completely different from the MCU doesn't automatically make a decision brilliant.

@jst5 - He's not really smart. The guy called Ant-Man mid but forgot that Ant-Man made more OW domestically than Clayface made OW worldwide. So mid that more people went to go see THAT....

THE BIG DEAL about this number is it's only 200k below the Thursday preview number. This is what we call legs. Saturdays number will be low because most people don't go to the theater on Halloween (look and see) so expect Josh to write a gOtChA article lmao.

The comments are even less on these articles. Why do most of you want DC to fail? Whiny ass clowns

Quoting someone nobody knows (Jeff Bock) just to pat yourself on the back for not liking it is goofy as well.
Same with making a poll and you combined the "haven't seen it with don't plan on seeing it"

@bobevanz - I don't want DC to fail I think Clayface was a great movie, saw it twice. On the 22nd, and last night for discount Tuesday. But I can remain skeptical of Gunn, his choices are questionable. For example I'm not crazy about the upcoming Grodd show but I may like it.

I'm hoping MOT comes in swinging 💪 as a DC fan I want Superman and Supergirl to do well. But it is hard to trust Gunn after how he treated Milly's Supergirl imo.

@bobevanz - "Why do most of you want DC to fail?"

I'd love to know this too. It's quite bizarre.

I can only speak for myself. I thought Clayface was pretty good for what it was. However, for me, I know what DC COULD be, and we aren't getting that. I'd love DC to win, but I don't think it ever will under Gunn's leadership. He was the wrong person from the get-go to be put in charge of it, and he hasn't done a single thing yet to change my mind on that, he's only just reaffirmed my stance. We deserve better, and Gunn can't deliver it.

I see the current DCU as an in-between point. Another step on the way to eventually getting a truly definitive DC Universe on screen. I'd love to be proven wrong, but I don't believe Gunn's vision is going to get us there. And I think the sooner DC moves on from his leadership, the sooner we'll have a chance of getting there.

@bobevanz - Jeff Bock is quoted all the time by the trades and is one of the most well-known, respected box office analysts in the biz. As for that poll, the option you refer to has been the same for YEARS now, whether it's for a Marvel movie or a DC one. For example:

I think this would be less of an issue if you paired this smaller DCU movie - release wise - with a heavy hitter.

It kind of shows they can go big and small.

One issue is it’s on the heels of a true POS so people are latching on to the box office for Clayface more.

That has already been answered you stupid illiterate AF dumbass.

I could keep going with the words but he's had me blocked since 2011 so not worth my fingers energy.
