Should DC Studios try to find success with mid- and low-tier budgeted comic book movie adaptations before swinging for the fences with $200 million blockbusters?
That ship may have sailed with Man of Tomorrow coming down the pipeline, but Clayface seems to be making a strong argument that James Gunn and Peter Safran should be taking that approach.
Sony couldn't make villain adaptations work for their slew of Spider-Man films, but Warner Bros. has past success with projects like Joker and the HBO Max Penguin series.
And the early tracking shows that the $40 million James Watkins-directed pic is tracking for a $23-$33 million opening weekend debut.
Launching an R-rated body-horror spinoff right before Halloween gives Clayface a huge advantage, but midweek drops are inevitable.
Expect Monday-through-Thursday ticket sales to land around 35% to 50% of its opening weekend numbers. When you stack those weekdays on top of a projected $25M–$30M launch, the film should easily clear $34 - $48 million in its first full week.
With the uncertainty of the Paramount merger behind them, Warner Bros. should be clear to spend marketing dollars and ramp up awareness for Clayface, meaning these figures could grow as we approach the film's October 23rd release date.
Tickets for Clayface are not yet on sale globally, but are expected to become available around Tuesday, October 20, 2026 (or sooner)
