THE BATMAN - PART II Has Enlisted An Academy Award-Winning Cinematographer

With The Batman - Part II set to begin shooting early next year, we have word that director Matt Reeves has enlisted an Academy Award-winning photographer to film the sequel...

Back in August, we got word that The Batman director Matt Reeves had finally finished the script for his long-awaited sequel, which he penned alongside co-writer Mattson Tomlin.

The news came in the midst of concerns that the movie, which does appear to be officially titled The Batman - Part II for the time being, may have been hit with another significant delay, with speculation continuing to mount that DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran might be planning to either introduce a brand-new take on The Dark Knight in The Brave and The Bold, or fold Robert Pattinson's BatVerse take on the iconic hero into the DCU.

Gunn remains adamant that the plan is still to forge ahead with another actor for the DCU's Caped Crusader, but we are going to see at least one more instalment in Reeves' "Epic Crime Saga" as well. The movie officially entered the pre-production phase over the summer, and cameras are scheduled to begin rolling early next year.

The movie is expected to film at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, Glasgow and Liverpool at some point in January, and we may now know who Reeves has enlisted to shoot his lsequel.

According to Jeff Sneider, Veteran cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt, who won an Oscar for shooting David Fincher’s Mank, has been tapped to serve as the DP. Messerschmidt also shot Fincher's The Killer, as well as episodes of Mindhunter. He is currently working with Quentin Tarantino on The Adventures of Cliff Booth.

UPDATE: Reeves has now confirmed the report.

Plot details are still under wraps, but Reeves did drop a few hints about the villain Batman will be facing off against in the movie, describing the mysterious antagonist as someone who has "never really been done in a movie before." The most popular theory seems to be Tommy Elliot, but there are a number of characters who could fit the bill.

“Because of what the first movie was and what [The Batman: Part 2] is, which is so much a detective story, the idea of trying to protect the secrets of the movie is super important because it’s a mystery. That would be an extra level of heartbreak if that part of it started getting out. You wanna keep the surprise so the fans... can have the fun experience that I always love going to the movies, which was to go and be surprised,” the filmmaker said in a recent interview.

In addition to The Penguin star Colin Farrell and several others (presumably more than 5 people at this stage), Robert Pattinson has read the script - which was delivered to him in a highly secure envelope that required a separate code to open - and was said to be very happy with the story, which will seemingly take the iconic DC Comics hero in a direction we have not seen before. “

"He’s Batman, so if he doesn’t like it, not good. So, I was super excited because I thought that he really would [like it] because the things that it does for his character, for Batman, and for [Bruce Wayne] has never been done before in this way. And I had a feeling he would respond in this way, the fact that he did was incredibly encouraging,” Reeves added.

The Batman - Part II is set to hit theaters on October 1, 2027.

Nice!!.

It sucks that Greig Fraser can’t be back since he did a wonderful job in helping to create the aesthetic of Reeves Gotham & such but Erik is a pretty good replacement pick imo given his work with Fincher (especially since SEVEN was an inspiration for The Batman).

Anyway , can’t wait to get casting news and ultimately check out the film!!.

Zootopia 2 Box Office Proves China Is Still There — Just Like The SnyderVerse

Zootopia 2 Proves China Is Still There — Just Like the SnyderVerse
Zootopia 2 opened to a massive $271,724,258 in China alone. That single number wipes out the excuse that China simply is not showing up for Hollywood anymore. Clearly, the audience is still there.

They show up for movies they like, for franchises that connect, and for stories that feel universal.

Snyder’s DC Always Connected in China

As we have been told that the SnyderVerse is back in play, worth pointing out again is that Snyder’s DC films consistently drew strong numbers in China. I went over it in the previous article how the talk of restoring the SnyderVerse has reawakened the dragon. Zootopia 2 proves it.

Snyder’s Man of Steel earned $63.44 million. Batman v Superman earned $95.77 million. Justice League, even the theatrical cut, cleared $106.05 million.

Asia has always been one of the strongest bases of support for Snyder’s work.

James Gunn’s Superman? A paltry $8.9M.

Zack Snyder Shares 'Pure Superman' Photo As Cavill Outshines Gunn Again

Why Foreign Fans Rejected Gunn’s Superman

As I’ve previously went over, talking with foreign fans, the reactions are very consistent. They all feel mocked by Gunn’s Superman movie. The Kaiju rooftop scene, where Superman leaves an Asian woman stranded, came across as tone deaf. The subplot with fictional nations fighting felt tied to American political messaging that does not translate overseas. The tone did not feel mythic or universal. It felt domestic and limited. And goofy.

Asia Has Always Supported the SnyderVerse

My insider put it plainly. Asia has been rabid for the SnyderVerse since the beginning.
A Chinese fan started the “Release the Snyder Cut” movement. Korean zombie hits like Train to Busan took clear cues from Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead. Modern Indian fantasy films have Snyder’s visual language all over them. The DC Café in Singapore was built around the Snyder DCEU. In the Philippines, theaters still keep SnyderVerse statues on display years later. Even modern K-Pop Demon Hunter heroines carry a bit of the Sucker Punch aesthetic (showed a badass group of females in a rock ‘n’ roll aesthetic), mixed with the vibe of older Asian action films like Michelle Yeoh’s Heroic Trio.
This is not a casual audience. Snyder’s work became part of the culture in several countries across the region.
Snyder Told a Universal Story

Many foreign fans point out another big difference. Man of Steel plays as a positive immigrant story. Clark is the outsider who becomes a source of hope. That message works everywhere.

Gunn’s version sent the opposite impression. The changes to Jor-El made the story feel like outsiders are dangerous or corrupt. That tone did not sit well overseas. The theme will continue in Supergirl.

This contrast is the same reason Zootopia 2 works. It tells a clean, universal story without political baggage, and audiences across China responded instantly.

Snyder’s Approach Still Works Worldwide

Zootopia 2 proves the audience never left. Hollywood did not lose China. The idea that China will not support Western movies anymore is simply wrong. China supports movies that connect with them.

That is exactly what happened with Snyder’s DC films. He presented Superman and Batman as mythic, iconic figures. That type of storytelling travels anywhere, and China proved it for years.

The renewed surge in Snyder interest from China right now only reinforces the point. The audience did not leave the SnyderVerse. The studio walked away from it.

He’s good despite my meh take on the cinematography for Mank. That’s more on Fincher not wanting to use dark shadows for some odd reason.

I mean he's not Greig Fraser.

Seriously. Could Fraser not do it? His work on the 1st movie is luscious.
