Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone Trailer: The Boy Wizard Takes Flight In Epic New Look

The new trailer for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is here, revealing a first look at magic, Quidditch, iconic moments from the book, and even a few scenes that didn't originate on the page.

As we first reported on SFFGazette.com, the new trailer for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone has been released, offering fans a better idea of what to expect from HBO's take on the Wizarding World.

The sneak peek opens by expanding on moments not seen in J.K. Rowling's novel, revealing the moment Ron Weasley received his letter from Hogwarts and when Hermione Granger arrived on the Hogwarts Express. We even see Lily and James Potter's courtship, suggesting the series will give viewers more reason to care for Harry's parents before Lord Voldemort killed them.

He's also teased in this sneak peek, but is only shown from behind as he approaches the house where he'll meet his match in young Harry. HBO has not revealed who will play the Dark Lord.

There are plenty of familiar moments, too, including the Boy Wizard's first Quidditch match, the Mirror of Erised, a very different take on the troll in the dungeon, and wizard chess. We also get to see what magic looks like now, as more of the redesigned Hogwarts is revealed.

While there are inevitable similarities to the Harry Potter movies, this does look like a much different take on the Wizarding World, with a fresh approach to its costumes, sets, and characters.

Still, what worked well last time does so again here; Paapa Essiedu's Severus Snape, for example, still has nothing but disdain for young Harry in Potions class.

"There is nothing special about Harry Potter - at least that's what his Aunt Petunia always says," reads the synopsis. "On his 11th birthday, a letter of admittance to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry opens up a hidden world for Harry: one of fun, friendship and magic. But with this new adventure comes great risk as Harry is forced to face a dangerous enemy from his past."

Check out the latest trailer for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone below.

The main cast of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone includes Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, and Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy.

Rounding out the supporting cast are Daniel Rigby as Vernon Dursley, Bel Powley as Petunia Dursley, Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, Amos Kitson as Dudley Dursley, Gracie Cochrane as Ginny Weasley, Leigh Gill as Griphook, and Anton Lesser as Garrick Ollivander.

The series, based on J.K. Rowling’s beloved books, is written and executive-produced by Francesca Gardiner. Mark Mylod will executive-produce and direct multiple episodes of the series for HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television. The series is executive-produced by J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone premieres on HBO Max this Christmas.

It looks exactly like the movies (except for that black guy). What a waste of time. I get that they’re trying to preserve the aesthetic for theme-park reasons while simultaneously erasing the original cast from the story because of their differences with Rowling, but it’s such a waste that they couldn’t come up with anything visually fresh.

@EscapeMySight - She literally did nothing wrong. She just advocates for female spaces. That's normal. Eventually people like you are gonna have to develop a personality. Performative outrage isn't a good stand in.
EscapeMySight
EscapeMySight - 9/2/2026, 2:40 PM
@rebellion - That's not really how it works. I can think JK Rowling's views are awful and still be interested in a Harry Potter adaptation. Watching a TV show isn't a political endorsement of its creator. If anything, the fact that I specifically said she can "get lost" makes my position pretty clear.

I'm also not paying for it, so apparently my performative hypocrisy is going to be remarkably inexpensive. :)

I don't believe enjoying a piece of fiction automatically means endorsing every opinion held by the person who created it. You can make that connection if you want, but that's your argument to defend, not mine.
EscapeMySight
EscapeMySight - 9/2/2026, 2:44 PM
@DarthOmega - That's a rather generous description of her position. Rowling has explicitly opposed some legal protections and rights sought by trans people, particularly around gender recognition and access to single-sex spaces. You can agree with her reasoning if you want, but pretending her position is simply "advocating for female spaces" leaves out quite a lot.

You think Rowling has done nothing wrong; I disagree. That's called having different opinions, not "performative outrage." And I've already made my position pretty clear: I don't like her politics, but I can still enjoy Harry Potter. If you need those two things to be mutually exclusive, that's a limitation of your argument, not mine.
nonserviam
nonserviam - 9/2/2026, 3:12 PM
@EscapeMySight - No, that's pretty much how it works. You can have your opinion all you want, but coming on here to tell everybody about it, and how you are going to beat the system..... That's the performative part.
EscapeMySight
EscapeMySight - 9/2/2026, 3:25 PM
@nonserviam - So the "performative" part is simply that I expressed my opinion publicly, on a public forum? That's an awfully broad definition. By that standard, pretty much everyone commenting on this post is being "performative."

I wasn't claiming to "beat the system." I made a joke that I'd watch the show through a free service because I don't want my money going toward Rowling. You can disagree with that choice if you want, but disagreeing with it doesn't make it performative.

And ultimately, I'm not sure what contradiction you're pointing to. I can dislike Rowling's politics, say so publicly, choose not to financially support her, and still enjoy a fictional world she created. Those things aren't mutually exclusive.
DarthOmega
DarthOmega - 9/2/2026, 3:44 PM
@EscapeMySight - "some legal protections and rights sought by trans people, particularly around gender recognition and access to single-sex spaces."

Those single sex spaces are female. They don't want biological males in their spaces. It` is that simple. She's not the one sending them death threats. They are doing that to her in huge numbers. She's not telling them to [frick] right off. She's not talking about watching pirated material, that's you. Also it's not a matter of opinion in this case. You're saying her advocating for female spaces is wrong. You need to explain how that's wrong. Just because I identify as something you are naturally doesn't automatically grant me access to your space.
EscapeMySight
EscapeMySight - 9/2/2026, 4:00 PM
@DarthOmega - I think you're arguing against a position I didn't take. I never said women shouldn't have female-only spaces, and I certainly never said that someone identifying as a woman automatically gives them access to every space they want. There are legitimate debates to be had about how single-sex spaces should be defined and regulated.

My point was that describing Rowling's position as simply "she advocates for female spaces" is an extremely selective description of her broader views on trans people and the rights and protections she opposes. That's what I was objecting to.

And yes, people sending Rowling death threats is wrong. But other people's reprehensible behaviour doesn't somehow make every position Rowling holds correct or immune from criticism.

As for the piracy comment, I never claimed it was some great moral stand. I made a joke about watching a show without financially supporting someone whose politics I disagree with. You're free to think that's hypocritical. But that's a completely separate question from whether I agree with Rowling's views.

You don't have to agree with me. But if you're going to tell me I'm wrong, you need to address what I actually said rather than turning "I disagree with Rowling's politics" into "I think women shouldn't have female-only spaces."
DarthOmega
DarthOmega - 9/2/2026, 4:02 PM
@EscapeMySight - What are her broader views on trans people?
EscapeMySight
EscapeMySight - 9/2/2026, 4:11 PM
@DarthOmega - Quite a lot, and I'm happy to be specific.

Rowling's position goes beyond simply saying that women should have female-only spaces. She has repeatedly argued that biological sex is immutable and should take precedence over gender identity in law and policy. She has opposed self-identification-based gender recognition, argued against allowing trans women access to some female-only spaces, and campaigned against policies and legislation that she believes erase or undermine sex-based rights. She's also repeatedly criticized the idea that identifying as transgender should, by itself, determine someone's legal or social classification as male or female.

At the same time, I'm not claiming she believes trans people should have no rights, because that's not what she says. She has explicitly said that trans people deserve protection from discrimination and violence.

So when I said her views are broader than "she advocates for female spaces," I meant exactly that. You can agree with her position if you want, but there's a lot more to it than that one sentence.
DarthOmega
DarthOmega - 9/2/2026, 4:28 PM
@EscapeMySight -

"She has repeatedly argued that biological sex is immutable and should take precedence over gender identity in law and policy."

Nothing wrong with that. They absolutely should.

"She has opposed self-identification-based gender recognition, argued against allowing trans women access to some female-only spaces, and campaigned against policies and legislation that she believes erase or undermine sex-based rights."

Again, absolutely nothing wrong with that. You don't get to just say "I'm a woman" and get access to female spaces because you feel something. That's what I said earlier. She campaigned against it because she believe those spaces should remain female. Like sports where biological males have an advantage over biological females. It absolutely is an erasure of women's right to compete with other women without this nebulous definition of gender which boils down to expression. has nothing to do with how they were born.

"She's also repeatedly criticized the idea that identifying as transgender should, by itself, determine someone's legal or social classification as male or female."

She has argued extensively that biological sex is real and immutable, and that a person's internal feeling or declaration of gender identity should not automatically override biological sex in legal, social, or sex-segregated classifications. Such as the case in Scotland that would allow individuals to change their legal sex through self-declaration without medical certification or transition evidence. She argued it erodes the legal definition of a biological woman. Again I don't see why that's wrong.

And all of it still wraps up to my earlier point. It's still women's spaces. In society, in sports, in private areas. We went from listen and believe all women, to what is a woman to woman is just an expression. I'm not a woman. My wife, daughters, sisters, cousin, mom and grandma are women. They went through things biological males could neve go through. You don't get to just declare you are something and if I don't disagree I can [frick] right off.
EscapeMySight
EscapeMySight - 9/2/2026, 4:58 PM
@DarthOmega - I think we're actually getting somewhere, because you're now making my original point for me.

I never said there's something inherently wrong with believing in female-only spaces, sex-based distinctions in sport, or believing that biological sex matters in law and policy. Those are positions people can legitimately argue for. My point was that Rowling's views on trans issues encompass all of those things and more, so describing her position simply as "she advocates for female spaces" is an incomplete description of what she actually believes and campaigns about.

And I'm not asking you to agree that her views are wrong. You clearly don't. That's fine. I do disagree with a number of her views, which is why I said I don't like her politics.

But notice where we've ended up: you're explaining at length why you think Rowling's position is correct, while my original point was simply that I don't agree with it. That's literally what "I don't like her politics" means. I don't need to prove that every position you agree with is objectively wrong in order to disagree with it.

And none of this changes my other point: I can disagree with Rowling's views and still enjoy Harry Potter. You can believe that's hypocritical if you want, but watching a fictional television series isn't a declaration that I endorse every political position held by its creator.

So we're probably just at the point of agreeing that we have fundamentally different views on this. That's a perfectly normal outcome of having a political disagreement.

And just to be clear, caring about trans people's rights does not mean I don't care about women's rights. I care about both. I don't think protecting one group necessarily requires treating the other as though their concerns don't matter.

There are legitimate and complicated questions around women's spaces, sport, healthcare, legal recognition, etc., and reasonable people can disagree about how those should be handled. My position isn't "women don't matter" or "anyone should automatically have access to any space they want." That's a caricature.

I simply don't share Rowling's conclusions on a number of these issues, and I also don't think trans people should be treated as though their rights and dignity are somehow less important. That's why I said I don't like her politics. It's really not any more complicated than that.

I gotta say , that looks good!!.

While there doesn’t seem to be that sense of wonder as of yet that the film had , it is just a trailer and thus might be captured better in the series itself…

It’s gonna be hard to not do comparisons but I do think the performances atleast seem to be good on their own such as Paapa Essiedu who doesn’t have Rickman’s sneer but still seems to capture the apt disdain and coldness towards Harry that the character needs.

Anyway , can’t wait to check this out especially since it comes out on my birthday!!.

After this trailer, I think I’m sold. It’s the little things that in the trailer that really caught my attention and I think true “Harry Potter” fans really be thrilled by. The Hogwarts Express is put together more like an English countryside train, Hogwarts has more of a school feel, and overall it looks less polished (which is actually a good thing). The movies were great, but they were very Hollywood “pretty” while this looks much more English and authentic. Even the house crests (which everyone has been complaining about) looks like crests dating back centuries. They look much more like simple English family crests. And best of all, season one is called “the Philosopher’s Stone” after the original book’s title. So excited.

That was actually a pretty solid trailer for me. I wasn't really interested when the first trailer dropped, but that looked more fun and polished to me. More enchanting and whimsical vibes than the kinda depressing first trailer. This trailer actually makes the show look high quality. And maybe I'm also just finally warming up to the new cast. I have to say making the Trinity killer the new Gandalf is pretty inspired casting, Mr Henderson sounds great in the role.

With the obvious exception of the DEI Hire Snape, this gives the very strong impression of being virtually a beat-for-beat recreation of the movie itself. The "additional and expansive book material" that never appeared in the theatrical versions better be worthwhile to justify the existence of this project. 🤨
