Why Did Kit Harington Join Harry Potter? Game Of Thrones Star Has His Say Amid J.K. Rowling Controversy

Kit Harington has addressed the ongoing discourse surrounding J.K. Rowling after joining HBO's Harry Potter series, revealing the personal reason he wanted the role of Gilderoy Lockhart.

HBO is rebooting Harry Potter, starting with Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone this Christmas and continuing with multiple seasons of television, each adapting another of author J.K. Rowling's books.

The writer's views on the trans community continue to divide opinions, with many Wizarding World fans critical of the actors willing to star in the series. The main argument is that the cast is somehow giving Rowling's opinions their seal of approval by agreeing to play the characters she created. Of course, just as many Harry Potter fans have found it easy to separate art from artist (and some agree with the writer).

Several actors have been asked how they feel about the writer's stance on this hot-button topic, and now Kit Harington has been asked about the continued discourse surrounding the author.

The Game of Thrones star was recently cast as Gilderoy Lockhart in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, taking over the role from Nicholas Hoult after he dropped out of the series due to scheduling issues. Harington previously played Lockhart in Audible's Full-Cast Editions.

"I’ve been a lifelong Harry Potter fan," Harington told TODAY (via SFFGazette.com), explaining why he joined the series. "I was a fan when I was a kid, and then I rediscovered it as an adult, listening to it every night. I listen to it every single night, and it helps me go to sleep, and I know other people do that as well, so they’re really important books to me."

He continued, "When I knew this was happening as a series, I thought it was the best idea. Because I love the films, but with this, they can really explore the books at their fullest, and for a book nerd like me, that was a really great idea."

While Rowling is an executive producer on the HBO series, she isn't expected to be heavily involved creatively. The author has said relatively little about the new cast, but hit out at original Harry Potter stars Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson for criticising her views on trans people, saying the latter is "ignorant of how ignorant she is."

Rowling's opinions on transgender issues have been a problem for HBO's Harry Potter from the start. While she continues to deny being transphobic, she hasn't shied away from sharing her opinions about trans women being allowed in spaces reserved for biological women and has celebrated legal and political developments opposed by trans-rights advocates.

Asked about Rowling's views last year, HBO boss Casy Bloys said, "The decision to be in business with J.K. Rowling is not new for us. We’ve been in business for 25 years. It’s pretty clear that those are her personal, political views. She’s entitled to them. Harry Potter is not secretly being infused with anything. And if you want to debate her, you can go on Twitter."

The main cast of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone includes Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, and Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone premieres on HBO Max this Christmas.

I understand Rowling sucks but it’s lame to hassle these people for joining the franchise. Harry Potter is beyond her at this point and obviously they don’t all share her views. Let these people work on something they’re interested in and be fans.

@newhire13 - Why does she suck because she stands up for actual women and believes men shouldn’t be trouncing women in sports or be in female locker rooms?

No they haven't. Only for online weirdos who aren't going to watch the show anyway.

If hoult isn't going to be Lockhart anymore... I wouldn't mind him as Voldemort.

Sounds good!!.

He was great as Gilderoy Lockhart in the Full Cast Audio Editions so to have him reprise the role on screen could be really fun even though he would likely have to modulate his performance to some degree given he’ll be on camera now but still…

Also i know sometimes actors say they are fans of something just to get brownie points with the fans or something but Kit is most definitely a legit fan so im happy he gets to be involved with a property he loves across 2 different mediums!!.

It's not controversial at all unless your part of the segment of idiots who think it is.

You don't have to like her views. That doesn't mean they "suck." From what I've seen she has a very reasoned position on the whole trans issue. It's obviously not popular with those that don't share her views, but that's how views work. Some people tend to believe one thing and some another. That's good. I don't think she's ever spoken ill of someone with different views. If you're an adult and you want to alter your body, go ahead. It's literally none of my business. When you start dictating what I can and can't say, that's an issue. When you allow minors to permanently alter their bodies, that's an issue.

This is a reasonable point of view that is shared by 90% of the population. I have a friend with a trans or non binary child. (I'm not 100% sure of the child's views) He agrees with this point of view. I've never read Rowling saying anything that 90% of the population doesn't agree with. By definition, that's not controversial.

@Grimfoe - 100% this. The media NEEDS it to be controversial.

@Grimfoe - "When you allow minors to permanently alter their bodies, that's an issue."

It's very fortunate, then, that that doesn't happen. Of course, that hasn't stopped bad faith culture war grifters from lying about that in an effort to get good people to turn against a maligned minority.

"Rowling's opinions on transgender issues have been a problem for HBO's Harry Potter from the start."

They've only been problems in countless articles where the headlines attempt to make it a problem. Outside of that, it doesn't seem like JK's views are hurting this production in any way. And I doubt the ratings with reflect it's any sort of "problem" either once it premiers on Christmas.

People need to learn to separate life from art again. Does Rowling even have much involvement in this? IIRC she was pretty hands-on with the original film scripts and at least some of the casting, that's clearly not the case here.

A Harry Potter story without any direct mention of Rowling or her transphobia? Just throw it in there anyway! Gotta angry up the nerds somehow.
