Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, has shared an update on HBO's Harry Potter plans. He's revealed that the show is unlikely to maintain a strict yearly release schedule but confirmed the network aims to keep the wait between seasons as short as possible.
The Harry Potter reboot is set to bring J.K. Rowling's seven-book saga to the small screen across multiple seasons, with each instalment adapting one of the original novels. While the series was initially described as a decade-long commitment, Bloys now appears to be taking a more cautious approach to its overall run.
In an interview with Deadline, Bloys was asked whether HBO can maintain a yearly release schedule given the show's demanding production schedule and the relatively short breaks between filming.
"No," he admitted. "We’re trying as hard to bring it back as quickly as possible. It’s not going to be two years [between seasons], but we’re trying hard to keep it as compressed as possible."
That's likely to be welcome news for fans, particularly given the enormous scale of bringing the Wizarding World back to life (there's also the small matter of making sure the show's young cast don't outgrow their roles). Bloys was also asked whether the previously announced ten-year plan for the series remains intact.
"Who knows?" he mused. "Each book is a huge event. I’m right now thinking about season by season as far as what it all adds up to."
One thing Bloys is considerably more certain about is the show's launch, starting this December with Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. "Christmas Day is going to be a great launch day for Harry Potter," he promised.
The executive was also asked whether J.K. Rowling's controversial views had created any difficulties with casting or the production. His response was unequivocal: "Not even a little bit." Bloys further confirmed that Rowling remains creatively involved with the series, responding "Yes absolutely" when asked about her role in developing the series.
Meanwhile, Bloys also provided a brief update on The Last of Us. Season 3 is expected to arrive in 2027, although HBO has yet to settle on a specific release date. Asked whether it will be the show's final season, Bloys stopped short of making that official but acknowledged that showrunner Craig Mazin has planned it that way.
