Minds Eye Entertainment has bought the movie rights to the Canadian comic book Superhero CAPTAIN CANUCK from writer/creator Richard Comely. The announcement was made today by Kevin DeWalt, CEO and President of Minds Eye. DeWalt reported that Minds Eye will work closely with Comely to develop the film.

The first issue of CAPTAIN CANUCK hit newsstands in May 1975. Thirty-six years later, the superhero franchise still has a strong following from fans around the world. To date, more than 2 million copies have been sold and 26 different editions have been printed. IDW Publishing recently published two hardcover collections of the original issues that have since sold out.

DeWalt said:

“I have always been a big fan of CAPTAIN CANUCK, and we are honored to be working with Richard on bringing Canada’s greatest Superhero to the big screen.”

Richard Comely said:
“I’ve had a great beginning with Minds Eye. I’m confident we can make a movie that will appeal to audiences both in Canada and around the world.”

In addition, CAPTAIN CANUCK has also made the cover of TIME magazine.

Note:Three characters have worn the maple leafed costume of Captain Canuck. Described as a cross between Captain America and Flash Gordon, the first Captain Canuck patrols Canada in the (then) futuristic world of 1993, where "Canada had become the most powerful country in the world." He was the costumed agent of the CSIS (Canadian Secret Intelligence Services). Captain Canuck is sometimes confused with Marvel Comics's Guardian, leader of Alpha Flight, created by Chris Claremont and John Byrne in 1978. Both characters have very similar costumes, and both are Canadian. The character has universally been depicted as possessing super human strength and speed.
