Rebecca was on the verge of tears at the New York screening of "The Punisher" Wednesday night after some spurned paparazzi literally backed her into a corner.

"Everyone knew Rebecca wasn't going to do any interviews because of her split," an insider tells the Post. "But it was expected she would take photos." Instead, Romijn-Stamos quickly walked up the red carpet and made a beeline for an elevator inside the theater. She wasn't fast enough, however, and the pushy photogs, cameras a-flashing, pinned the blonde bombshell and her rep against a wall.

Then things got really ugly.

Paparazzo Steve Sands reportedly began berating Rebecca, screaming, "You [very, very bad two-word expletive]! We will follow you everywhere you go! How dare you come to New York and act like this, you [expletive]! No wonder your husband left you."

Ouch. Sometimes? Being a celebrity? Not fun. A shaken Romijn-Stamos understandably ducked out a back door before the movie started. Sands, by the way, was named one of the 50 Most Loathsome New Yorkers by the New York Press, which said he's "considered a vile, intrusive monster even by other paparazzi."

As for her estranged hubby, the actress told Stern, "I still love John ... Not one part of me wants to hurt [him]," but admits they haven't spoken recently. According to the Post, Stamos is currently spending time with his buddies at Disney World, the happiest place on Earth.
