Today, it's been announced that a brand new Star Trek video game will be released sometime next year, and it will be set in the J.J. Abrams universe. So we have a little something to tide us over while we wait for the second installment. The Hollywood Reporter has the following info confirming that you can play both Spock and Captain Kirk for the first time in video game history, and that it'll be released on PS3 and Xbox 360 (it's unknown whether it'll be released for more consoles, but these two are the only confirmed ones so far)...

The game is said to the first time that players will be able to play the part of Kirk and Spock with Paramount saying it is an extension of the adventure begun by Abrams in the 2009 film. It teases the story involving the duo as “filled with action-packed combat as Kirk and Spock must work together to stop a legendary enemy race bent on conquering the galaxy.”

The game will be for Xbox 360 and PlayStation3.

So who's excited that a new Star Trek video game's finally coming out?! Anyways, both the game and the untitled sequel to the 2009 film will be released sometime in 2012.
