For 60 years, Star Trek has been one of science fiction's most popular franchises. But while many of its earlier shows had several seasons to develop their characters and build an audience, but today's television landscap makes it so that even well-reviewed shows can struggle to survive more than a season or two.

That's what happened with Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, which was canceled after just one season had aired. Despite earning positive reviews from critics, the Paramount+ series received a mixed response from fans, with some taking issue with its younger cast, storytelling, and overall direction.

Robert Picardo, who returned as the Doctor from Star Trek: Voyager, believes the show's cancellation reflects a larger problem facing the franchise. The actor believes that the current political climate has made some of the values that have long defined Star Trek more controversial.

Speaking with TrekMovie, Picardo discussed the show's cancellation and why he believes it deserved more time to find its audience.

"Every Star Trek show was criticized in its first two or three seasons, and then took often till season 3 to get on track," Picardo explained. "And even though I think the quality of our show was great, we were kind of killed in the cradle, and I believe part of it is the present political moment in our culture that diversity, that all of Star Trek's core values are now out of fashion temporarily."

"We see diversity under attack, and therefore Star Trek is under attack because that's what Star Trek's always been about," the actor added.

Diversity has been a major part of Star Trek since the original series premiered in 1966, and the franchise has also regularly addressed political and social issues through its stories. However, some fans have criticized newer shows for placing too much emphasis on those subjects

Picardo believes these themes are essential to Star Trek and hopes future projects continue to embrace them.

"So hopefully, whenever they create the next Star Trek movie and Star Trek show, they'll remember what it was that made Star Trek special, and that present weather conditions in politics will change, and Star Trek once again will emerge with all of its values intact," he continued. "That's what I believe and I hope for. But right now, you know, the feeling has been a little grim recently."

Although Picardo believes politics played a role in the show's reception, Paramount+ has not publicly linked its cancellation to political backlash.

Despite its early cancellation fans do have one more season of Starfleet Academy to look forward to. Picardo, who has already seen portions of the upcoming episodes while recording additional dialogue, teased: "I hear season 2 is even better from the producers. I've seen quite a bit of it while I've been doing ADR on it, and it looks spectacular."

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is scheduled to return for its second and final season in March 2027 on Paramount+.

I thought the show was decent. Would’ve definitely watched a second season. But it was canceled so what is there to talk about. N***** die every day, b.

As a Trekkie, I KIND OF agree with this in some ways. But I do think, sort of like Enterprise, shows like Discovery will be looked back on fondly than how it first released. Picard...ABSOLUTELY NOT. SNW I think will age terribly and pending on SFA S2...I think may also have to be aged in order to be appreciated for what it is.

However, the writing is no where near as good as the entire 5th season of DS9 or hell seasons 3-6 of TNG. And that's a problem.

The reality of real world politics affecting the production of fiction through storytelling, when most of us turn to fictional storytelling to momentarily escape the reality of real world politics. The irony.

All these shows and game developers getting confused why their liberal agenda material is failing… it’s the fans fault.

So out of touch, your main source of income is saying stop and your like “your gonna know our sexual orientation and your gonna love it “

Star Trek was woke before woke become a thing to use as a tool by racists and etc to try to reverse what they are on to those they hate simply because the people they hate had the audacity to stand up to them and not want to put up with their shit. im extremely disappointed how deeply these people actually infest trek fandom. Trek fans before they became infiltrated by these toxic individuals, were a base of fans who got into arguments over technical diagrams and how plausible the science was in this weeks episode or the wrinkles in the uniforms or crooked communicators. now its a cesspool of political and social toxicity under the guise of "real fans" who are fed up and angry at Star Trek for simply being what it has always been. Star Trek. find me a star trek in the past that didnt address or have included in it that which all these clowns are complaining about today. next generation was full of stuff that if released today would have caused a panic attack amongst these new so called fans.
