BOX OFFICE: STAR WARS: TFA May Become The Highest Grossing Movie Ever With $3 Billion

We've had a lot of very interesting box office updates on Star Wars: The Force Awakens since Friday, but this might just be the most exciting yet! According to box office analysts, it appears as if the movie is indeed going to beat the worldwide haul taken by Avatar in 2009...

Star Wars: The Force Awakens opened even bigger than expected this weekend, and it's quickly become evident that strong word of mouth is ensuring that the movie will have a lot of staying power at the worldwide box office (despite some initially predicting that it would be very top heavy, with the majority seeing it in the first few days, only for ticket sales to then plummet). Now, word comes via The Wrap that the J.J. Abrams helmed release is indeed the first real contender for the current $2.7 billion record held by Avatar, news which should make a lot of you very happy!

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has made $610 million in four days, and the trade seems confident that its success up until this point is a strong indication that it will have no problem becoming the highest grossing release of all-time. Paul Dergarabedian, Rentrak's senior box office tracker has even gone as far as to say, "Are we looking at the first $3 billion movie ever? I think we could be." Big things are also expected for next weekend, with Exhibitor Relations's Jeff Bock stating: "I could certainly see it landing north of $200 million this weekend. This is all uncharted territory, but you look at what ‘Avatar’ and ‘Titanic’ did in their second weekends and you have think, why not? This was a unique situation with so many people wanting it to be better than the prequels, and it delivered, and these numbers were the result. I don’t see anything topping this, not even ‘VIII."

So, it looks like we'll have a new record holder, though nothing is set in stone just yet. For now though, it looks like Star Wars: The Force Awakens is set to become the new box office king...
