BOX OFFICE: STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS To Pass $800M In North America Today

It looks like Star Wars: The Force Awakens is going to do even bigger business in China than initially expected, as The Hollywood Reporter confirms that it had the highest Saturday opening day of all-time in the Middle Kingdom. The majority of movies open on a Saturday there, so that's obviously an impressive feat. Anyway, it grossed an incredible $33 million according to early Disney estimates, and is now only second behind Furious 7 for the biggest single day gross in the country's history (that scored an impressive $54.4 million last year). The J.J. Abrams helmed release is way ahead of previous big openers in the country, including Avengers: Age of Ultron ($29.2 million), Transformers: Age of Extinction ($27.4 million) and popular Chinese movie Monster Hunt ($27.7 million), so things are obviously looking good for the Return of the Jedi follow-up right now.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens became the highest grossing movie in North America last week by topping Avatar, and is expected to pass the $800 million mark domestically later today. That means it will be the first release in history to reach that landmark figure, and it could very well creep up towards the $900 million mark. The movie will also pass Jurassic World this weekend to become the third highest grossing release in history behind only Avatar and Titanic, and while it will almost certainly cross $2 billion in the next month or two, whether or not it will top either of those remains to be seen. If Disney are smart, they'll re-release The Force Awakens before Episode VIII comes out, as that would at least ensure that it beats Titanic! What did you decide to watch this weekend?
