SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY Star Sadie Sink Teases MCU Secrets While Expressing Interest In "Darker" Roles

The intrigue and speculation surrounding Sadie Sink's Spider-Man: Brand New Day role continue to dominate the conversation. Unfortunately, it feels like each time we take one step closer to learning who she'll play, we're then forced to take two straight back again.

Sink has repeatedly played coy when asked about her MCU debut, though the trades have reported that the Stranger Things star will reprise her mystery role in Avengers: Secret Wars. That lends weight to theories that her character will be tied to the Multiverse; still, it could be as simple as her showing up for a cameo, not dissimilar to Ned Leeds in Avengers: Infinity War.

So, Jean Grey? Shathra? Madelyne Pryor? Spider-Woman? Only time will tell, but in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sink opened up on the experience of joining the Marvel Universe with Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

"Oh, it was crazy. I found out while we were wrapping up season five [of Stranger Things]. Spider-Man has always been my favorite. I love Spider-Man. I love Tom’s Spider-Man, especially," Sink enthused. "To be a fan of something and then join it is a familiar feeling for me, because I was a fan of Stranger Things before I joined the show, but I was super excited about what they had planned."

"I also worked with the director, Dustin Daniel Kretten, in one of the first movies I ever did when I was 14, so it’s kind of a full-circle moment. I had an amazing time working on that film. I can’t wait to talk about it more. There’s so much I want to share."

"That’s why I feel like keeping Stranger Things secrets are kind of easy because I have so many Spider-Man secrets I’m sitting on that feel even more secretive," she teased.

The site wondered whether Sink has a dream role or genre she wants to tackle, and after saying that she's "open to whatever," the actress might have dropped a hint at what drew her to a potentially villainous role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day

"At least right now, I’m finding myself gravitating towards challenges, which is good. One thing that’s important to me is to really tap into every side of myself as an actor when I’m choosing a new project."

"The first thing I look for is: How is this going to push me in ways I haven’t been pushed before, which is a good period to be in right now because I’ve been doing this for a very long time, but I’m still very young and there’s so much more to learn as I grow older and step into more adult roles. So there’s no specific genre that I’d like to do."

"Although I feel like in a couple of years I’m going to be like, 'I just want to do a comedy or something really light,' which I’ve actually been saying for a while, but I still gravitate towards darker, more demanding things."

With Jean looking like a very real possibility for Sink (presumably meaning she'll return in the post-Secret Wars MCU for the X-Men reboot), the current theory on social media is that this version of the character will be based on the hard-edged Ultimate version of the powerful mutant.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings helmer Destin Daniel Cretton directs Spider-Man: Brand New Day from a script by returning Spider-Man franchise writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers.

Tom Holland plays Spider-Man in a cast that also includes Jon Bernthal (The Punisher), Mark Ruffalo (The Hulk), Zendaya (MJ), Sadie Sink, Michael Mando (The Scorpion), Tramell Tillman, Marvin Jones III (Tombstone), Jacob Batalon (Ned Leeds), and Liza Colón-Zayas. Avengers: Doomsday star Florence Pugh is expected to reprise her Thunderbolts* role as Yelena Belova.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be released in theaters on July 31, 2026.
