Scream icon Matthew Lillard is set to star in James Gunn's Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow. The two men have been friends since Lillard played Shaggy in the live-action Scooby-Doo movies, making this something of a reunion.
The actor's role has been kept a closely guarded secret, but we finally have some details from @AtlantaDCFans. According to the reliable X page, "Matthew Lillard’s Character in Man of Tomorrow will have a Biracial Family. He will also share scenes with Jimmy Olsen, Cat Grant and Perry White." His two children are reportedly aged between 7 and 11.
This doesn't give us much to go on, and it certainly doesn't sound like Lillard is playing a superhero. Instead, it seems he's somehow connected to The Daily Planet, meaning the Daredevil: Born Again star could be one of countless obscure comic book characters.
Hopefully, more details will be revealed soon. For now, Gunn is deep in post-production on Man of Tomorrow and likely in no rush to reveal any of the movie's secrets before he has to.
Lillard is currently doing the rounds to promote Prime Video's Carrie (we'll be sharing our interview with him, the rest of the show's cast, and showrunner Mike Flanagan later this week). In an interview with ComicBook.com, the actor broke his silence on the news that Daredevil: Born Again will end with Season 3.
"I do think it’s in the hands of Dario [Scardapane], who is a great storyteller," Lillard said. "I think that the show, this season, is going to be explosive, and is really going to rattle a lot of people’s expectations."
"I, too, am sad. It was a shocking move," the Mr. Charles actor said of the decision to end the series. "I think that cast is incredible, and the storytelling is incredible, and I was disappointed, totally."
In Man of Tomorrow, Superman will be forced to team up with Lex Luthor to battle Brainiac, a threat not just to Metropolis but to the entire world.
Written and directed by James Gunn, the movie stars include David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Lars Eidinger as Brainiac, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag, Sr., Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Milly Alcock as Supergirl.
Andre Royo, Matthew Lillard, Sinqua Walls, and Adria Arjona will also star. However, as we mentioned above, we still don't know whether the latter is playing Maxima or Wonder Woman. There's also speculation that Eva De Dominici is playing one of the characters, and there's always a chance the Diana Prince rumblings don't pan out. We'll have to wait and see.
Man of Tomorrow arrives in theaters on July 9, 2027.
