Digital and physical copies of Superman (2025), the top-grossing comic book movie of the year, will become available on September 23. Ahead of that release, director and DC Studios co-chair James Gunn has shared a brief preview of what his director's commentary will add to the movie. Check it out below.

NOTE: The digital version of Superman was first available for purchase on August 15 but did not include any of the extras, such as Director's Commentary. Superman fans who have already purchased the film on digital will have these additional items added at no extra cost.

Director’s Commentary and Behind-the-Scenes Deep Dive
James Gunn guides viewers through his vision for the iconic superhero with an exclusive director’s commentary track included on all home video editions. The release also features an impressive collection of bonus content, headlined by the hour-long documentary “Adventures in Making Superman,” offering an extensive look at the film’s production process.

Superman soared into theaters on July 11, 2025 and officially launched the cinematic side of James Gunn’s reimagined DC Universe. The film grossed $615.3 million worldwide from an estimated production budget of $225 million. The film has an 83% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes from over 450 critic reviews.

Originally titled Superman: Legacy, the film is both written and directed by Gunn, and serves as the foundation for the next era of DC storytelling.

Leading the cast is David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Kal-El, stepping into the iconic cape. He’s joined by Rachel Brosnahan as fearless journalist Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as the brilliant and menacing Lex Luthor.

The film also introduces several key DC heroes, with Nathan Fillion as the hot-headed Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as the winged warrior Hawkgirl, and Edi Gathegi as the genius strategist Mister Terrific.

Additional cast members include Sean Gunn as scheming businessman Maxwell Lord, María Gabriela de Faría as the cybernetically enhanced Angela Spica (aka The Engineer), and Terence Rosemore as Otis. Wendell Pierce will portray Daily Planet editor-in-chief Perry White, while Sara Sampaio takes on the role of Eve Teschmacher.

Anthony Carrigan plays Metamorpho, the shape-shifting Element Man, and Pruitt Taylor Vince and Neva Howell appear as Jonathan and Martha Kent, Clark’s adoptive Earth parents.

Also making her debut is Milly Alcock as Supergirl, who will appear ahead of her own upcoming solo film, Supergirl.

A pseudo-sequel has already been announced, Man of Tomorrow, which will find Superman and Lex Luthor forced to team up to confront an even deadlier foe. Rumors on social media speculate that the arch enemies will be combining forces to take on either Amazo or Brainiac.

Man of Tomorrow is scheduled for release on July 9, 2027.

Im here for more director's commentary.

That's one of the things thats been greatly lacking with streaming and digital releases!

Im hoping Nolan would reconsider doing this for Tenet down the line 😅

Here's a perfect example of an article that is clearly about James Gunn talking, yet there will STILL be people coming into these comments to say some shit like 'Man, this guy never shuts up!!' Like, you don't have to read EVERY article. Go find something else to do, you whiny little bitch.

It’s wierd that it took this long give how long ago it came out on digital, probably just too busy between the marketing for Superman and then Peacemaker back to back

The Guardians 3 “Oner” remains my favorite but this Mr Terrific one was fun too , especially in regards to the idea of having it from Lois’s perspective to an extent..

Really hope to hear this director’s commentary soon since I thought the movie was solid so would like to get insight into Gunn’s take & process!!.

@mck13 - It made less than Man of Steel globally; it underperformed in some foreign territories as a direct result of some of the hugely unpopular American political policies effecting those areas. But it out-performed Man of Steel at the domestic box office, by some $60 million (not taking into account inflation).

@mck13 - You make me feel embarrassed to be a Man of Steel fan.

Both Snyder and Gunn gave us decent Superman movies.

Finally saw this movie and did not enjoy it. I always thought Nicolas Hoult was the wrong choice, and I was not proven wrong. He does not come off as intimidating in the slightest bit. Superman came off as an immature teenager. Why do they call themselves the Justice Gang when they have JL on their uniform? Has Hawkgirl always screamed? I thought that was Black Canary’s thing. A thousand other things bugged me. Not excited for Gunn’s universe.

@tvor03 - do you have a favorite version of Superman?
tvor03
tvor03 - 9/20/2025, 8:07 PM
@epc1122 - I am NOT a Zac Snyder guy. That being said, I did very much enjoy Man of Steel. I think Christopher Nolan had enough influence to keep Snyder in check. But once he was given the keys to the kingdom, everything went off rail.

Some filmmakers need to be kept on a leash for their own good. When given full creative control, they lose the mainstream audience. Snyder is one of them. Waititi another. I’ve always thought that about Gunn. I’m still willing to give him the benefit of the doubt til we see more, but I’m skeptical.

@tvor03 - it’s funny because I have always loved man of steel but the more I watch it the more things bother me about the movie. Even from the beginning on krypton where they know they planet is going to be destroyed and the counsel is pretty much “oh well”. Cavill was so good in it and would have liked to seen him in a more traditional man of steel sequel. Still love the movie but not my favorite version. At first when I saw Superman 25 I was a bit disappointed but found the more I saw it, the more I enjoy it . I’m a huge Superman fan though and can appreciate different versions. Reeve for me is my favorite Superman. After 40 years, I find I can still watch his versions snd I don’t think it missed a beat 👍

@tvor03 - The only thing I'm going to address is your question about the Justice Gang because the uniform clearly has a 'JG' on it. Look again.
