SUPERMAN’s Box Office Revenue Said To Have Been Counteracted By WBD’s TV Losses

Superman may have had a somewhat healthy box office run, but the movie’s revenue is said to have been offset by the company’s traditional-TV losses.

Superman's financial reception was a complex one. The movie's arrival marked a decisive point for not only DC Studios, but Warner Bros. Discovery as a whole. Given its large number of consecutive superhero flops at the box office, WBD desperately needed Clark Kent's latest standalone feature to hit it big.

However, the movie arrived, and fortunately, it was not a flop... yet, it wasn't a massive blockbuster either. It was a moderate performer, with profits that, while likely not coming in from its theatrical period, would probably come in through ancillary markets. Now, a new report from Variety has revealed that revenue (Note: revenue, not profit) from Superman and other well-performing movies were just enough to compensate for significant losses in another area of the company—that of traditional television.

Warner Bros. Discovery reported a $148 million loss in the third quarter of the year. The company is said to have received a boost in revenue of 74% through the performance of Superman, WeaponsThe Conjuring: Last Rites, and, as Variety reports, F1, which, while having premiered in the second quarter of the year, still generated revenue that carried over into quarter 3. Unfortunately, as mentioned, the money brought in by those features was offset by company losses.

Case in point, the revenue from WBD's traditional-TV ventures dropped 23% to $3.88 billion. Variety explained that some of the reasons for this decline is the lack of an event as significant as the 2024 Paris Olympics (which WBD had the rights to broadcast in Europe), and the lack of election-time news coverage. Furthermore, distribution and advertising revenue also fell, 8% and 21%, respectively. Overall, revenue for the third quarter is said to have experienced a 6% decrease from the same quarter from the previous year, resulting in $9 billion in revenue.

According to Variety, this revenue fall could prove beneficial to Warner Bros. Discovery in trying to sway shareholders regarding a drastic restructuring of the company. It was recently reiterated that top brass at Warner Bros. was contemplating splitting the company into two entities to sell them separately, as opposed to one big corporation.

One entity would be called Discovery Global, which would carry WBD's television networks like TNT, TBS and CNN. The other entity would be known simply as Warner Bros. and would carry all the properties and brands already associated with the studio. In this case, the WBD brands currently reported as suffering significant losses are those that would fall under the umbrella of Discovery Global. This is where a split could become enticing for shareholders.

Per Variety, WBD has been letting its investors know it wants to restructure the company, and traditional-TV losses offsetting theatrical revenue will, according to Variety, serve as evidence to show shareholders why the split is necessary.

In a letter to shareholders, WBD stated:

"[Warner Bros. Discovery]] is evaluating a broad range of strategic options, including proceeding with the planned separation, a potential transaction for the entire company, or separate transactions for the Warner Bros. and/or Discovery Global businesses." The company also said it was considering, "alternative separation structure that would enable a merger transaction involving Warner Bros., while Discovery Global would be spun off to our shareholders."

Superman is now streaming on HBO Max.

@RockReigns - Reminder James Gunn is friends with 2 pedos, threw a pedo party, and made thousands of pro pedo “jokes”.

@NoName6315 - Reminder, Zack Snyder is very philanthropic, he has adopted many small girls from China and loves children. Especially female Chinese children.

Before all of you get your panties in a bunch, it's because ad revenue is down. They should pivot to social media instead of jurassic Cable. 562.5m was the break even point. And you chuckle [frick]s know Disney sacrificed F4 just to take out Superman's legs. They had an entire year between Doomsday and they dropped 3 cbm's in 7 months.

Here's your context, send in the clowns

Zaslav and Co continue the decade of bad decision making that has tarnished WB and HBO. The constant mergers only highlight the level of incompetence that had lead this studio to such a low point.

That he wants to remain in charge post merger with Paramount, should that be the ultimate outcome, is laughable and depressing since it’s likely.

Superman, Sinners, and F1 saved them from having an awful year. Cable is hurting them a lot. That’s why Zaslav wants to split the company.

Lmao. I didn’t love the movie but it cast a wide net. I honestly didn’t realize how big the game was until the movie came out. My girlfriend’s niece had us take her and the theater legit felt like Endgame for kids.

All the kids in the theater were clapping and geeking out and saying the lines. It was kind of a wild experience.

The most overrated movie in recent times, it was a total lack of respect, they turned Superman into Super-Star-Lord, and Supergirl-influencer-paris hilton is still to come

If WB were interested in making the best long term moves they would've saw the success of Barbie and had a sequel or spin off in theaters in summer 2025.

Instead, they tried using hack James Gunn to form a powerhouse DCU to increase the bidding price for WB.

End result, James Gunn's, James Gunn's Superman did exactly what many of us knew it would.

Why did we know? Gunn's GOTG movies that were SNL style slapstick, parodies failed to hit $900 million even when released during the MCU's prime. Actual ticket sales did not increase even after being heavily plugged in Avengers 3 & 4.

It was clear that without the once popular MCU behind him, Gunn's Superman would get attention & curiosity & do a few hundred million less than GOTG 3. And also that his Superman's box office take will be the high water mark for the DCU with following movies doing less and less.

That means WB must spend less on future DCU movies because they know there will be no billion dollar hits. Those seeking to buy WB will obviously know the deal & if they're smart they will care more about what has worked, than WB's failed attempts to ride the once popular super hero genre that is now in steep decline.

Any buyer other than Netflix would be likely to drop Gunn, not even consider the Snyderverse and stop trying to ride the Marvel bandwagon that ended years ago.

Since WB already has more DCU movies in production, a buyer will hope those movies do well, and then they end the DCU. So we will see a new buyer take control, claim they are fully behind the DCU. (Gunn fans then claim "I told ya so!") A year or two later WB quietly ends it.

@PartyKiller - you lost me at "consider the Snyderverse."

It's not coming back and neither are the actors.

It's an inferior film in every way compared to MOS

@Colton

The score and cinematography are probably the only categories MOS outdoes Superman (2025) in. Zimmer’s Superman theme is goated. Shannon’s Zod was also great but so was Nic Hoult’s Lex.

"However, the movie arrived, and fortunately, it was not a flop... "

The 5 stages of grief
Denial: Disbelief and shock as a way to cope with the initial overwhelming emotions.
Anger: Frustration and rage that can be directed at others, oneself, or the situation.
Bargaining: A need to regain control by making deals or promises, often to a higher power.
Depression: Sadness and a sense of emptiness as the reality of the loss sets in.
Acceptance: Coming to terms with the loss and adjusting to life without the person or thing that was lost.

It looks like we are still in the first stage...
