Next summer's Superman: Legacy will introduce us to the new DCU in theaters, but it's in the upcoming Creature Commandos TV series that we'll get our first taste of what DC Studios has in store for this rebooted franchise.

While the animated show is going to put the spotlight on a relatively obscure group of characters from the comics, it seems likely James Gunn will take this opportunity to lay the groundwork for what's to come in the new DCU.

There have been rumblings for some time about Creature Commandos premiering on Max in 2024 and that's been confirmed by star Sean Gunn today.

Talking to Screen Rant (via Toonado.com) at the Saturn Awards, the G.I. Robot and Weasel actor said, "We have Creature Commandos coming out in the fall, which is amazing, I just can't wait for our audience to see [it.]"

And with that, we have a premiere window! There was a time when it looked like Waller would also be released this year but, thanks to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, it's slipped down the release calendar; in fact, James Gunn seems to have shifted his attention to Peacemaker season 2.

"I love that project," Sean told us about Creature Commandos last year. "The scripts are so good and we’ve already been doing a little recording which is fun. I can hint and tease that we’re going to learn a little more about Weasel which is going to be interesting."

"I just love GI Robot so much. He’s driven by one thing and one thing only, which is his hatred of Nazis and his desire to kill as many Nazis as possible," he continues in the video below. "So, for me, as somebody who hates fascism in all its forms, I can relate to somebody who wants to get out there and put the smackdown on some Nazis."

Creature Commandos stars Frank Grillo as Rick Flag, Sr., Indira Varma as Bride of Frankenstein, Zoë Chao as Nina Mazursky, David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein, Alan Tudyk as Doctor Phosphorus, Sean Gunn as G.I. Robot and Weasel, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic, Steve Agee as John Economos, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller.

The Witcher star Anya Chalotra, meanwhile, has been cast as classic Wonder Woman villain Circe.

The show sees Amanda Waller create a black ops team out of monstrous prisoners. Gunn wrote all of the first season's episodes. Keep checking back here for news on Creature Commandos' premiere date and watch our interview with Sean in the player below.

Not dying to see this series but will watch it out of curiosity. There's always easter eggs and references to other characters so this might give us a small taste of what's to come.

OFF TOPIC:
Well, this'll be interesting to see it play out:

@dragon316 - I agree. I don't like politics, but I lean a 'tad' right simply because of the idiotic hollywood workers (writers, directors, actors, film crew, ect) who scream far left and then they bully anyone who has different beliefs.

They still need a decent worldwide rollout plan to make all this work. Seems like the most random way to kick off his tenure; reeks of Marvel "oh they'll watch anything" attitude but with far less credentials to back it up. I love animation so that isn't a problem for me, but it surely will be for some people as well. Doesn't matter how good it is, some people just don't like it.

@RealTurner - idk if all these projects need to be for everyone , it’s ok if some appeal to a certain amount of people

They just need to make sure then that the interconnectedness isn’t a big issue and these projects standalone moreso.

@TheVisionary25 - I think it would be good if there are some movies or shows having a higher level of interconnectedness and some with lower levels with the more obscure characters in the latter group.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 2/7/2024, 8:14 AM
@RolandD - that could work too

Same with animation & video games since not everyone is into those.

@TheVisionary25 - Agreed and the would say that especially with the video games. Both of those, I think it would be good for there to be interconnection, but not at all required viewing, or using to be in tune with what happens in the movies.

im super excited about this! I think its great to start off with something understated to start building out the world instead of having Superman Legacy do all the heavy lifting. To come out with something so obscure Gunn must have had a really good idea for it. I'm optimistic with the direction he's taking with all this!
