The Deal Is Done: Warner Bros. Discovery & Paramount Officially Unveil $111 Billion Megamerger

Warner Bros. and Paramount have now formally unveiled their multibillion-dollar "megamerger" after Netflix bowed out of the running on Thursday...

Though U.S. and EU regulators still need to put the final stamp on the deal, Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Skydance have now officially announced that their $111 billion megamerger is a go.

The joint announcement follows the bombshell news that Netflix had decided to pull out of the battle for Warner Bros. Discovery just a couple of hours after the David Zaslav-led media company’s board declared Paramount's new bid a “superior proposal.”

Paramount mogul David Ellison said: “From the very beginning, our pursuit of Warner Bros. Discovery has been guided by a clear purpose: to honor the legacy of two iconic companies while accelerating our vision of building a next-generation media and entertainment company. By bringing together these world-class studios, our complementary streaming platforms, and the extraordinary talent behind them, we will create even greater value for audiences, partners and shareholders — and we couldn’t be more excited for what’s ahead.”

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav added, “I’m very pleased with the outcome we achieved for WBD shareholders and the entertainment industry. Our guiding principle throughout this process has been to secure a transaction that maximizes the value of our iconic assets and our century-old studio while delivering as much certainty as possible for our investors. We look forward to working with Paramount to complete this historic transaction.”

As part of the deal, Paramount and Warner Bros. will operate as independent studios, with a commitment to 15 films from each every year, with full 45-day windows before going to premium video on-demand, with longer windows for hit films.

There are other concerns, of course, and many within the industry worry that Ellison’s close ties to the Trump administration could stifle free expression.

“Ellison scares the shit out of me,” one A-list director tells Variety. “Are the movies they put out going to be catered to Trump’s taste? Are they going to start cracking down on content that they don’t find to be ideologically aligned with the right?”

In any event, we're not expecting to see any major shakeups when it comes to the running of DC Studios, HBO Max and the like, although top executive reshuffles are always a possibility.

WB Pictures chiefs Pam Abdy and Michael De Luca are coming off a massively successful 2025 after the likes of Sinners and One Battle After Another, and there are whispers that "the executive turnstiles are about to swing once again."

“If they’re smart, they’ll keep Mike and Pam,” says one media executive. “But there’s only so much executive power to go around. Decisions will need to be made.”

This is the better outcome

@Matchesz - TBD but there is at least hope there...there was zero with Netflix.

@Matchesz - This helps theaters and is probably the better outcome. I thought no Gunn resigns after the Supes/Lex film and they reboot again after this.
Bucky74
Bucky74 - 2/28/2026, 2:49 PM
@jst5 - I mean, Netflix would have gained an overwhelming amount of additional content and people would waited a few weeks to see new films rather than pay for a ticket.
UltimaRex
UltimaRex - 2/28/2026, 2:50 PM
@Matchesz - better for WB shareholders. Maybe even better for Netflix when they swoop in to buy PSWB for pennies on the dollar five years from now.

Better for the actual moviegoer? I don't see it...

UltimaRex - 2/28/2026, 2:51 PM
@Bucky74 - unless he walks, Gunn is going nowhere.
Bucky74
Bucky74 - 2/28/2026, 2:54 PM
@UltimaRex - I disagree but well see. I think he’ll say he’s done even if they pushed him out and they be a nice statement and his DCU will dissolve. We’ll see
UltimaRex
UltimaRex - 2/28/2026, 3:02 PM
@Bucky74 - if that happens, I'll revise Netflix buying PSWB from five years to two years. Including the year for the PSWB deal to even go through.

That's how stupid that decision would be.

@UltimaRex - Superman made much less than both MOS and Superman Vs Batman not even adjusting for inflation. That’s basic economics.

@Bucky74 -I'm not seeing the plus here...

@Bucky74 - S25 was the highest grossing superhero movie of 2025, crushed it on streaming and has successfully launched a franchise that WILL make a TON more money.

Killing that for no reason is pure stupidity.

whynot - 2/28/2026, 6:21 PM
@Bucky74 - “Superman made less then MOS” this is inaccurate. Dan Murrell explained on his channel that they both made about the same due to the box office share with the studio being higher in the US vs international. Obviously Superman made more in less time domestically so that money being front loaded the way it was plus the VOD sales and merch would put them both in the same ballpark. If we go by inflation we would also need to adjust the movies costs inflated either way both of these movie came out to be about the same with Superman 2025 having better reviews in a time where superhero fatigue is at its max

@Bucky74 - You’re comparing apples and oranges. Cinema is not what it was in the 2010s The entire box office is down. 2024 and 2025 were both extremely disappointing years overall. It’s basic economics.
RolandD

@whynot - The Snyder folks all seem to forget that Superman was much better received except by them. There were things I liked better about Snyder’s film and things I liked better about Gunn’s film. The most important thing for me is getting the character right and that’s what James Gunn did.
Matchesz

@jst5 - i’ve seen 11,393,277,276 possibilities and this is the only one that keeps theater doors open
Bucky74

@jst5 - Netflix winning might kill the theatrical film industry
Bucky74
Bucky74 - 2/28/2026, 11:18 PM
@UltimaRex - Highest grossing move means nothing if it’s not profitable and they pretty much admitted it was not a successful film. You may have liked it (I was disappointed) but the numbers don’t lie. And it’s WB’s money. They can try again if they want but by all metric measures it was not successful and Warners had admitted it failed to meet expectations
Bucky74
Bucky74 - 2/28/2026, 11:21 PM
@whynot - I have to Google it but I’m almost positive WB already admitted the film underperformed for them. I’ll get back to you on that but MOS definitely made more not even adjusted for inflation. And “Superhero fatigue” is a lame excuse. There are a million zombie films and you don’t hear “Zombie fatigue”
Bucky74
Bucky74 - 2/28/2026, 11:22 PM
@RolandD - That is true but it still made less even without being adjusted for inflation and I read somewhere that WB already admitted it was a disappointment for them.
Bucky74
Bucky74 - 2/28/2026, 11:32 PM
@RolandD - Because Supes has always been an overly emotional screaming man-child who needs constant “Soothing” from his parents while in his 30s. Even Corenswet was against Gunn’s vision of Supes but was overruled.
Bucky74
Bucky74 - 2/28/2026, 11:36 PM
@whynot - I believe there was an article where WB admitted that Superman failed to meet expectations
whynot
whynot - 2/28/2026, 11:49 PM
@Bucky74 - the WB never said that. That being said I implore you to watch Dan Murrell box office analyst compare MOS to Superman 2025. He actually gave Superman 2025 a rotten score in his review so I’m not giving you a guy that is bias. He breaks down the numbers on this thought. After watching you’ll see that I wasn’t incorrect with my original comment
UltimaRex
UltimaRex - 3/1/2026, 3:29 AM
@Bucky74 - WB's expectations was 500m per Zaslav himself.

Superman made 600m+.

...

What don't you get?

@RolandD - explained that to him before. It didn't sink in.

@Bucky74 - no, they didn't.

Because it wasn't.

@Bucky74 - there isn't.

@UltimaRex - Zaslav expected it to do poorly?
UltimaRex
UltimaRex - 3/1/2026, 5:17 AM
@ObserverIO - only if you actually believe Superman had a 300m+ budget.

Which it didn't.
Bucky74
Bucky74 - 3/1/2026, 7:35 AM
@whynot - Is he working off actual numbers though or WB spin? I’m not being a dick just asking because everything I’ve seen shows it made much less.

@UltimaRex - https://cosmicbook.news/superman-theatrical-loss-wb-earnings

They can spin expectations any way they want. A 250M budget with out marketing has to make almost 3 times as much to be profitable.
jst5
jst5 - 3/1/2026, 7:53 AM
@Matchesz - Correct....plus there is hope for a good DC product there is no hope for that with Netflix.Hopefully the new Paramount can make that happen....all we know know right now is they can finish massive deals(UFC and now WB)
RolandD
RolandD - 3/1/2026, 7:56 AM
@Bucky74 - The entire movie industry is suffering. There are occasional huge blockbusters now each year instead of several. Why is it so difficult for you to comprehend that. The fact that Snyder‘s first two movies with Superman had much higher box office is not evidence of quality. It’s evidence that a lot more people used to go to see a lot more movies in the 2010s than in the 2020s.
RolandD
RolandD - 3/1/2026, 7:57 AM
@Bucky74 - That part of the movie didn’t thrill me. I think Gunn was trying to show the importance of his Earth parents, but I think it was a little heavy-handed. But you completely overstate a point. Corenswet was against how James Gunn viewed one scene. To say that he was against James Gunn vision of Superman is utterly ridiculous.
RolandD
RolandD - 3/1/2026, 7:58 AM
@UltimaRex - Just like in politics, ever since the era of Trump, for some people, facts don’t matter.
Bucky74
Bucky74 - 3/1/2026, 8:02 AM
@RolandD - If the quality is there people will come. I wanted to love Gunn’s Supes.
I left the theatre feeling disappointed. IMO Gunn made a divisive film that was politically charged, had a whiney, man child take (not Corenswet’s fault), and side characters more entertaining than their lead.
Bucky74
Bucky74 - 3/1/2026, 8:04 AM
@RolandD - But that scene was Gunn’s vision and take in the character. Supes came off as an over emotional man child.
