Fans excited for The Witcher to return later this year will have to wait a little longer, as a new report reveals that Netflix has pushed back the release window for the show's fifth and final season.
According to What's on Netflix (via SFFGazette.com), the streamer now intends to debut The Witcher Season 5 sometime in 2027. While an exact premiere date has not been revealed, the outlet is confident that the release window has shifted significantly beyond the previously expected 2026 launch.
Production on the final season wrapped back in September 2025, leading many to assume a Fall 2026 release was likely, especially when Season 4 premiered in October 2025. With filming completed, a roughly year-long post-production schedule had seemed realistic, making this latest update a surprise.
As of now, Netflix hasn't shared any official word on the reported delay, and no reason has been provided for the apparent change in plans.
Still, there are several possible explanations. The VFX-heavy series could require additional post-production time, or Netflix may simply be adjusting its release calendar to make room for other (more important) projects. Viewership for Season 4 was reportedly poor, and reviews weren't kind to new Geralt of Rivia, Liam Hemsworth, so The Witcher may no longer be a priority for the streamer.
Interestingly, the delay appears to be a relatively recent development. Earlier this year, showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich indicated that Season 5 would arrive in 2026, suggesting the streaming service altered its schedule sometime after those comments were made.
Season 5 will bring Netflix's adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski's fantasy saga to a close, following Liam Hemsworth's debut as Geralt of Rivia in Season 4 (he replaced a departing Henry Cavill).
In March, Netflix released a synopsis for The Witcher Season 5, revealing, "The time of the end is nigh: dark forces are aligning all across the Continent with villainous designs on Ciri. Even if Geralt and Yennefer can save their daughter and fulfil their last wish of reuniting as a family, they'll have to face obstacles — and enemies — the likes of which they've never faced before."
Alongside Hemsworth, confirmed cast members for the final season include Anya Chalotra (Yennefer of Vengerberg), Freya Allan (Princess Cirilla of Cintra), Joey Batey (Jaskier), and Laurence Fishburne (Regis).
The Witcher Season 5 will see Lauren Schmidt Hissrich return as showrunner. Executive producers include Steve Gaub, Mike Ostrowski, Javier Grillo-Marxuach, Platige Films (Tomek Baginski and Jarek Sawko), and Hivemind Content (Jason Brown and Sean Daniel).
