X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE Star Liev Schreiber Reflects On Sabretooth Role; Reveals Why He Din't Appear In LOGAN

Liev Schreiber has looked back at his time playing Sabretooth in 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine, revealing why he didn't return as the villain in Logan and how it felt to see Ryan Reynolds reboot Deadpool.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine was released to mostly negative reviews, though it faced more than its fair share of challenges during production. The WGA strike had a huge impact on shooting, while a workprint of the movie was infamously leaked online weeks before its arrival in theaters.

Then, there's what 20th Century Fox decided to do to Deadpool. The less said about that, the better!

Had things gone differently, the plan was for Magneto, Gambit, and even the Merc with the Mouth to receive their own "X-Men Origins" movies. Instead, the concept was abandoned and Hugh Jackman's clawed mutant continued to appear in the main franchise along with a solo sequel/reboot titled The Wolverine

His story ultimately ended in 2017's Logan, and while the hero's clone delivered the killing blow, many fans have questioned why that honour didn't go to his brother, Sabretooth. Liev Schreiber was fantastic as the villain in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but it turns out there's a simple reason why it didn't happen.

"They didn't ask me!" the actor tells GQ after reflecting on the fun he had playing the character. "I don't think he was part of that story. I would have loved to bring Victor back, anytime, anywhere. It wasn't part of that narrative."

"I'm wondering if I'm getting a little long in the tooth, so to speak, but probably not for Sabretooth."

Schreiber also shared his thoughts on how Ryan Reynolds managed to redeem Deadpool after the Merc with the Mouth was butchered in 2009. "Ryan did such a great job with that transition. I feel like, in many ways, it was so antithetical to what that character was in Origins. I'm glad Ryan was able to correct that mistake."

While a return as Sabretooth is unlikely, we're optimistic the Ray Donovan alum will get the opportunity to play another comic book movie character at some point.
