Marvel Studios' X-Men reboot is quickly taking shape, but how exactly will it differ from what's come before? That's the question many fans are asking, especially with regard to the team's costumes.
In 20th Century Fox's X-Men movies, it took around 16 years to even tease comic-accurate efforts (in the closing moments of 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse). There were glimmers of hope along the way, but Dark Phoenix went back to generic uniforms, and that was where the franchise finally ended.
Still, Deadpool did a decent job with Colossus, for example, while Marvel Studios' Deadpool & Wolverine finally gave us Hugh Jackman in Logan's yellow suit, mask and all.
Avengers: Doomsday is also heading down the comic-accurate route, with the returning Fox X-Men wearing costumes inspired by their iconic 90s looks. So, where does that leave Jake Schreier's X-Men, a reboot that, so far, looks like it will have a much darker, grittier tone than X-Men '97?
Time will tell, but the untitled movie has just made some impressive behind-the-scenes additions. Sanja Milkovic Hays will be X-Men's costume designer, after previously working on MCU movies Captain Marvel, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Thunderbolts*. That bodes well for fans getting to see some impressive designs on screen two years from now.
Kasra Farahani, meanwhile, looks set to be X-Men's production designer. He worked on Loki and The Fantastic Four: First Steps, creating the unique worlds of the TVA and Earth-828. He was also enlisted by the Russo Brothers for Avengers: Doomsday.
Seeing how the world of the X-Men is created in the post-Avengers: Secret Wars MCU promises to be very exciting for fans. Marvel Studios can put a new spin on what we've already seen, or even be a little more radical with something inspired by the Krakoan Age, for example. Either way, a first look can't get here soon enough.
"There's been 10 great X-Men movies [but] there can be 100 more," Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said at D23. "There's sagas, upon sagas, with these comics that haven't been told yet. And that's great because the stories that inspired me to want to make these kinds of movies haven't been told yet. I'm quite excited about doing them."
Directed by Jake Schreier (Thunderbolts*), the untitled X-Men movie stars Kit Connor (Heartstopper) as Scott Summers, Sadie Sink (Spider-Man: Brand New Day) as Jean Grey, Christopher Abbott (Catch-22) as Professor Charles Xavier, Inde Navarrette (Obsession) as Rogue, and Maya Boyd (& Juliet) as Storm.
Samara Weaving (Ready or Not) also stars as Emma Frost, alongside Adam Driver (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), who plays Nathaniel Milbury, an alias of Mister Sinister in the comics.
X-Men will be released exclusively in theaters May 5, 2028.
