X-Men Rumor Reveals Which Mutants Are Currently Set To Appear, Wolverine's Status, And More

A new rumour reveals which mutants are currently set to headline Marvel Studios' X-Men reboot, and with that comes an update on plans for Wolverine and whether Sadie Sink really is playing Jean Grey.

There's a huge amount of intrigue surrounding Marvel Studios and filmmaker Jake Schreier's X-Men reboot, but will we get a cast reveal at next weekend's San Diego Comic-Con?

With the movie expected to begin production in the coming months, it's certainly not impossible. However, it does seem more likely that the focus of that Hall H panel will be Avengers: Doomsday and, to a lesser extent, perhaps even Avengers: Secret Wars.

As reports swirl that Adam Driver is the MCU's Magneto (Bill Skarsgård is reportedly the favourite for Professor X), another big X-Men update has just come our way from former Nexus Point News scooper @ApocHorseman. He has a solid track record with that site, so it's worth paying attention to his latest claims about the reboot.

"Since we’re on the topic of X-Men and people asked, here’s everyone I know is for sure in the film," he wrote on X before listing Cyclops, Jean Grey, Emma Frost, Rogue, Storm, Professor X, and Magneto. The insider then added, "Characters I’ve heard but haven’t been able to confirm are Beast and Angel, so please take those with a grain of salt."

Later, he'd clarify, "This is just who I’ve heard is in the film and can verify. There [are] definitely more characters, and this isn’t the full lineup. Marvel’s good at keeping some secrets."

Interestingly, the scooper has heard nothing about Wolverine being in the X-Men reboot. The clawed mutant was the focal point of 20th Century Fox's early mutant movies, but sidelining him to focus on other characters isn't necessarily a negative, especially as we're bound to get a Wolverine movie at some point.

He also doubled down on Sadie Sink playing the MCU's Jean Grey, meaning Spider-Man: Brand New Day will introduce the first member of the MCU's X-Men. Highlighting a mutant in what will likely be one of the biggest hits of the summer is a smart move, though it still seems an odd fit for a Spider-Man movie.

For what it's worth, @MyTimeToShineH has shared a familiar rumour about Sinks Jean being X-Men's lead character, suggesting there are big plans for the hero moving forward.

Last year, we asked Schreier how Thunderbolts* had prepared him for the X-Men reboot. "I loved working on it," he told us. "And I loved working with everyone at Marvel. I think that the lesson of the movie is also the lesson in making the movie, which is that you cannot, and I mean, it's kind of obvious making it, that you cannot do it alone. I think that Thunderbolts* is the product of just a massive amount of work."

"Jon Watts was my roommate in college, and I used to go see the Spider-Man movies and be like, 'God. That just seems like so much work. There must be some way where it doesn't feel that way,' and it's like, 'No, it's just a massive amount of work by a ton of people who care deeply,' and I think that I would not have gotten through this without so many [of them]."

"If you can learn to work within that environment and really harness the kind of energy that those people bring, then there's an opportunity to really tell interesting stories and take things to places that are unexpected, and try to make something special," Schreier concluded.

Marvel Studios' X-Men reboot is expected to be released in 2028.

Sink looks like such a kid.....I don't think they'll be doing the love triangle drama with Scott and Logan. My hope is that Wolverine is introduced via Alpha Flight and Heather Hudson is the redhead and vindicatior the other point in the triangle. And yeah, short Wolverine is the only Wolverine

I think it's better to leave Wolverine out of the line up for the first couple entries. Let the other characters establish themselves without the hindrance of the more popular guy being in the mix. And then if it fails and they need that more recognisable character for grabbing the general audience's attention, get him in the follow up and promote the he'll out of it.

Part of me also thinks Hugh's going to stick around and do another Old Man Logan type of run (a kin the Sam Jackson's appearances as Fury in the first saga).

Emma Frost makes no sense in first X-Men movie.
Wolverine should start in Alpha Flight movie. Join X-Men in third movie.

Just missing Gambit in that line up and we're good to go.

Interesting if true…

Emma being there already is intriguing and having her with a young Jean & Cyclops could be potentially fascinating to explore (though it depends on how established these X-Men are post SW).

I’m fine with no Wolverine as of yet but I do hope Nightcrawler & Gambit are featured personally since they are some of my favorites!!.

Give Wolverine a solo series where he fights Hulk, Omega Red and others with Department H and Team X before he leaves and joins the X-Men.

@dragon316 -

The animated stuff never counts. Most of the general movie going audience doesn't care about that at all.

the reboot should really start with the Original Five being the current team, the real first X-Men... and during the film Charles recruits Storm, someone else (a male character maybe) and in the final battle Rogue switchs sides and ends with the X-Men.

So the film will end with a pretty decent roster ready for the sequel (that would also introduce 2-3 more fan favourites)

Id love to have Kitty Pryde on the first film as the teen Point of view..... but maybe its too many characters for a first film. No sure...

Id be happy with Jubilee too, since she never got her due at Fox. and would be a fresh character for Marvel Studios basically, and would add nice diversity to the team. And is a nod to X-Men 97 at the same time.

MyTimeToShineHello is NOT a reliable scooper. Quite the opposite actually. If Josh took the time to research he would know this. Even simply typing "is MyTimeToShineHello reliable?" in Google search will give you info on why he is not only an unreliable source, but MTTSH has been placed in the lowest accuracy or banned tiers by many prominent rumor tracking groups due to frequently incorrect or debunked claims.
@ApocHorseman is moderately reliable, so what he says might be true...or might not be.

@DarkeyeZ - Yeah, MyTimeToShineHello was only reliable back when Marvel’s security was compromised by the pandemic, and when they made too many projects for their security team to oversee.

Just do the original 5 in the first film fighting Magneto’s Brotherhood (just recast Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, everyone is sick to death of Elizabeth Olsen’s mass-murdering Wanda).

Speaking of Sink…Remember how she was rumored to be Madelyne Pryor a couple of times last year? You know… the Jean Grey clone that Spider-Man faced off against in the Dark Web storyline. Well, there are a LOT of Jackal references in this movie. You know…the guy known for cloning? Read this post for context:

I still think they should stick to the OG 5 and Xavier in the first movie.
Make the team young but established and have them recruit Storm during the movie.
Emma Frost can be included as a villain if the story calls for it but others like Rogue, Magneto and especially Wolverine should be saved for the sequels.

ObserverIO

If Emma Frost and Rogue are bad guys and if Storm is just a young girl teased in flashbacks when Xavier is in Cairo before founding the X-Men (and maybe teased at the end) then Cyclops, Jean, Beast and Angel are 4 of the 5 OG X-Men. We're just missing Iceman.

That's a couple of big ifs, but Emma probably is a bad guy and if they're doing Rogue right this time then she'll be a bad guy in her first appearance. But can they be patient and hold off on Storm joining the team in the first movie? Prolly not.

@ObserverIO - The writers and director have repeatedly said they are talking inspiration from the Claremont run. So I doubt the film will be about the O5.

Anyway, this is giving me flashback to those Fantastic Four casting rumors from a few years back. Remember those rumors also included Adam Driver as Reed Richards? That was reported by multiple scoopers (Daniel Richtman, Jeff Sneider, The Direct, etc). When none of those rumors happened scoopers said that Driver turned down the role. But according to Matt Shakman, those rumors were just rumors.

Not saying these X-Men rumors can’t be true, but this is giving flashbacks of those F4 rumors.

@Gnostic - I'd give my left nut for a Giant-Size X-Men adaptation if they wanna go all in on Claremont. With exactly the same team line-ups for the OG team and the Giant Sized team.
