UPDATE: Clayface Catastrophe? DCU Horror Movie Faces 58% Second Weekend Drop With Expected $10 Million

Clayface faces a tough second weekend at the box office, with You Can See Everything tipped to claim #1. Can DC Studios' R-rated horror movie recover and reach its estimated break-even point?

UPDATE: Halloween is historically one of the worst weekends of the year for box office takings, which isn't doing Clayface any favours. The latest projections from Variety point to You Can See Everything making $10.65 million by Sunday, and the DCU body horror not too far behind with $10.25 million (it's a tight race, but the documentary has the edge for now).

Whether Halloween is an anomaly for Clayface or a sign that it was a front-loaded release will be decided from Monday onwards. Box office analyst Gitesh Pandya believes that, based on its current trajectory, the DC Studios title will finish its domestic run with $65 million. Clayface has so far made $31.4 million overseas; depending on its marketing spend, the break-even point mentioned below is attainable.

It's unclear what DC Studios and its new owners, Paramount Pictures, would consider a win for Clayface, but more positive reviews and no financial loss might be enough this early into the DCU. Still, "hit" status likely isn't in the cards for this one.

It's not shaping up to be a particularly Happy Halloween for DC Studios' Clayface. Deadline currently expects Nathan Fielder's surprise hit, You Can See Everything, to take the top spot at the North American box office during its third weekend in theaters.

After earning an estimated $3.2 million on Friday, the Elizabeth Holmes documentary is on track to make $10 million to $11 million. Clayface remained at #1 until Wednesday with a steady hold, but You Can See Everything pushed it from the top spot the following day.

It's going to be a tight race for the top spot, as the trade expects Clayface to also land somewhere around $10 million after a $3.1 million Friday. However, the majority of analysts are favouring You Can See Everything, due to it slightly outpacing the R-rated body horror in recent days.

Clayface was never expected to be a record-breaking hit, and it didn't need to be with a mere $44 million production budget (there's still no word on how much DC Studios spent on marketing). However, with an estimated $110 million to $130 million break-even point, the DCU movie needs legs to hit that and, hopefully, become profitable.

A 58+% drop from its $24 million opening weekend isn't the sort of hold you'd hope for from a horror movie with an A- CinemaScore and a 94% Popcornmeter rating. The positive word of mouth is there, but people aren't buying tickets.

While it's easy to make excuses for Clayface, the fact that it's a low-budget horror movie pales in comparison to it being a DC movie (and it was heavily promoted as one). The DC IP is one of the biggest in the world, and while this Matt Hagen is no Joker in terms of popularity or recognisability, this is still a DCU title about a Batman villain.

Clayface had a so-so $19 million opening internationally, and we're still waiting on updated figures from overseas. Domestically, it should end the weekend at around $43.7 million, and if we guesstimate that it will have made upwards of $35 million elsewhere by the end of the weekend to land somewhere between $75 million and $80 million, it still has a long way to go.

Still, a disappointing second weekend won't define Clayface's box office run, and it still has time to make what it needs to be deemed a success. It stands a very good chance of being a modest hit when all is said and done, but whether that's enough for Skydance executives after Supergirl's dismal financial performance remains to be seen.

The top five will be rounded out by Wildwood ($6.8 million), Wicker ($3.5 million), and Street Fighter ($3.3 million).

We concluded our Clayface review by saying, "Tom Rhys Harries shines in Clayface, an uninspired and unoriginal movie that's too light on horror and lacking in comic book personality to be anything but forgettable. It should have been a game-changer for the genre; instead, it's DC's Morbius moment."

Clayface is now playing in theaters.

Obviously this is another Joshua Wilder article..
Why don't you go pay attention to something else like how shitty Doomsday is going to be?

Lay off DC pal. These projects fail because people like you constantly bash it until you can't bash it anymore.

Unlike Marvel, at least DC Studios is taking risks and doing something different.

If you can read this, go [frick] yourself Josh

@Nolanite - The idea that a low skilled writer who should be so blessed to write about this shit for a living continues to try to tear down a brand, without which the traffic and business of this site would go far down. Continues to show bad faith tribalism like a 12 year old.

@Nighthawk01 - No. It's not a good second weekend. But as a supposed writer reporting box office to say there's no excuse it's the DC brand and leave out the only real legitimate excuse that contributed to a 58% drop, shows his bad faith.
Nighthawk01
Nighthawk01 - 10/31/2026, 9:13 AM
@Rexotron - How many more excuses are you people gonna make? All month youve all been saying that Clayface would get some huge Halloween boost to make up for its average opening and now Halloween is suddenly bad for this amazing DCU body horror film? BS man and you know it. Followed the link to Deadline and they dont make the Halloween excuse. They anti DC too??!
Rexotron
Rexotron - 10/31/2026, 9:28 AM
@Nighthawk01 - @Nighthawk01 - who the [frick] said that?! It's proximity to Halloween was going to be good for it. Im fact in another comments section I specifically said the lead up to Halloween will be good business. Historically Halloween has always been bad. Just like how New Years Eve is a low grossing day in December. Historically the month of October has always been a lesser month, but that's fine for relatively lower budgeted fare like horror films and non tentpole pictures. Not for films like Black Adam. Which sucked to begin with.
Deadline's not bias. They wrote on the numbers. That's it. The problem is we all know Josh's bias. And instead of just talking numbers, he overcontextualizes, and injects editorial to give a negative lean to the subject. Deadline reporters know how to write an article on a weekend box office. Unlike that hack

DC's Clayface scored another $3.2M overseas on Friday, $31.4M total. Worldwide is now $68.3M

I can't wait until this breaks even.

UltronIO - 10/31/2026, 12:38 PM
@Rexotron - Are you talking about October 31st or Halloween weekend, because the 31st this year actually lands on Halloween Weekend, which is historically a big weekend for cinemas, especially for horror films, especially when there's no real competition for those horror films and especially considering the massive cbm-level marketing campaign this movie has.

There are no more excuses for Gunn. None for this movie. This movie has been given every advantage. The RT score, audience reaction, marketing, everything.

The low budget means that the goalposts have been lowered as much as they can be.

Yet it still might flop.

That's Nucking Futs!

@UltronIO - Only 9 of those movies in that table actually had Oct 31 in the tabulation, and 4 of those that had Halloween in there opened to a little over 10 or less for the weekend. So you didnt really counter the point.

This thread will be loaded with comments like @nolanite 's, even though this article is basically a list of facts that displays no bias and is quite fair. It's fine if you enjoy Gunn's DCU, just understand that it's not popular enough as is to sustain the project as a business venture, which it is. Without a quality film or show with well known and loved characters there is little chance for success. The Batman issue is going to sink the ship.... and it will be costly until that happens. There is simply not enough good will built up to get the DCU over the hump. Shut it down

@ProfessorWhy - Mental, isn’t it? It was the same with Supergirl - share news that certain elements of a fanbase don’t want to hear and you’re somehow biased or out to get a certain project. This is ComicBookMovie.com, and this is a major superhero project in its second weekend, but no, let’s not report on its projected box office because it’s “bad” news. It blows my mind.

Nobody will view you any different than they already do.
But I've known you long enough to know that you are a 100 percent certified Marvelite and then you also contribute to the hatred towards the DC Brand.

Arguing with you is pointless because you are hard headed and don't know shit about anything.

Wow. Another shit article Josh. Mentioning the DC IP. When it's an R rated Body horror film based off of a C-list villain the DC IP doesnt really hold much does it? The general populatio. Doesnt know what's part of that IP. Everyone knows who the top 5 in DC are but no one knows who the [frick] Booster Gold is. Also... You disingenuous pop tart. Saturday is Halloween. People dont go to the movies on Halloween. That's a genuine excuse.
You're bias which was started and fueled highly by the amount of engagement on negative articles about The Flash, has reduced you to someone who writes in a bias way about a media brand. Which shows just how terrible a writer you are. Which is only reflective of how false a journalist you are as well. TA-RA!
