EDITORIAL: staypuffed's Top Five Favorite BATMAN VILLAINS

The Dark Knight has some of the most memorable and fascinating foes in the superhero spectrum, so, in celebration of his 75th anniversary, staypuffed's counting down the five best Batman villains. Spoilers: list does not contain Killer Moth.

I did this countdown on my Instagram a few days ago, and I thought I would share it here as well (if you use Instagram, it'd be awesome if you checked @staypuffed14 out). Since Batman has, arguably, the best rogues gallery in comics (save for Spider-Man, perhaps), I thought it was high time to share my five favourite Dark Knight delinquents.

5. Two-Face
Much of Batman iconography revolves around duality, and no adversary represents this more than Harvey Dent, known as Two-Face. Once a man of the law, his twisted turn to crime revealed emotional scarring as well as physical, uncovering an intricate and damaged human being. The Dark Knight has my favourite depiction of the character, demonstrating the fragility and anger in Harvey, but as one of the oldest Bat-foes, the stories and concepts involving Two-Face are abundtant and fascinating.

4. Ra’s al Ghul
To modern readers, Ra’s al Ghul may be remembered in the form of his grandson, Damian Wayne (son of Bruce and Talia al Ghul), but this is one Bat-villain that poses an incredible threat unlike any other in the rogues gallery. Head of the League of Assassins, a dangerous international operation, and firm believer in biological warfare, Ra’s has been alive for centuries, rejuvenated by the mystical Lazarus Pit. Though he may have more respect for the Caped Crusader than most, he still has no trouble implementing his masterful criminal plans.
Recommended reading / Batman: Birth of the Demon.

3. Catwoman
Though she’s mostly considered an anti-hero or even ally nowadays (and that’s the way I prefer her), Selina Kyle has spent much of her career as an illusive villainess. One of the Dark Knight's very first adversaries, she's an expert thief, skilled in acrobatics and hand-to-hand combat, and has quite an affinity for her the animals that gave her her feline eponym. Sometimes a no-nonsense villain or a playful femme fatale, using her charm to her advantage, Catwoman is a wonderfully intriguing character.
Recommended reading / Catwoman: The Dark End of the Street.

2. Riddler
Though he isn't a physically intimidating foe, the Riddler's feeling of intellectual superiority and obsession with simple (or insanely difficult) riddles makes him a fascinating character, villain or not. Like several others on this list, the variety of possibilities of Edward Nygma are what making him endearing and fresh, from campy to crazy, calculated to conceited, his continual brain battle is less of a supervillain antic than a gripping compulsion.
Recommended reading / Batman: Zero Year.

1. The Joker
There isn’t much to say about him that hasn’t already been said, but there’s a reason the Clown Prince of Crime is Batman’s greatest foe and one of the best villains in comics: he is so layered, and so intricate that he can be played in a variety of different ways. Kooky clown, psychotic mass-murderer, evil trickster, practical joker; stories involving the Joker are some of the most complex, captivating compelling Batman tales ever told. He’s the yin to the Dark Knight’s yang, the chaos to his order. An iconic and utterly terrifying villain in the most unpredictable of ways.
Recommended reading / Batman: The Killing Joke.

And that’s the list! A few runners-up that didn't quite make it: Poison Ivy, Bane, Red Hood, Scarecrow and Harley Quinn. As always, agree or disagree, leave your thoughts below.

Excellent list! Another!

The Joker, Two-Face, The Riddler, Scarecrow, and Mister Freeze are the five that I can think of off the top of my head. Harley Quinn is right outside my top five, as well as Bane and Ivy.

HHhhmmmm

1. Riddler
2. Penguin
3. Catwoman
4. Joker
5. Mr Freeze

Riddler to me is the anti-Batman, both are showmen but Bats hides in the shadows while Nigma puts the spotlight right on himself. The one is the greatest puzzle solver the other is the greatest puzzlemaker. Problem is coming up with stories for the Riddler. Inventing mysteries and probable solutions to them that make sense is hard.

Penguin and Catwoman I really like as characters somehow. Heck, that Pain and Prejudice miniseries about Penguin was great as long as Batman didn't show up. There's real tragedy in that vicious little bastard. Catwoman has proven herself as an independent entity many times as well. Also explains my love for Batman Returns...

Joker's come down my list over the years because there's been so much material with him, its become kinda dull. Read the Long Halloween again and he's completely unecessary in the book, wish they'd just left him out for somebody else that fit the story better. I even considered leaving him off the list for Ms Ivy (Batman's most powerful villain if you ask me).

Freeze is the other guy you could make a book about and the bits with Batman would be the boring bits. A complete character who can stand outside the Bat's shadow. Also, shout out to the Animated Series.

Joker is #1 but....

I would have to include Bane on this list....

How do you take down Batman,

* Accept your limitations, you won't be able to take down Batman alone in a fight

* Challenge him by letting him take down other main villains

* Then when Batman is so exhausted, both mentally and physically, surprise him at his house and break his back.

This is why I feel like TDKR's could have been better. Would have loved to see Batman coming home to Wayne Manor and meeting Bane. I was really expecting that to happen. I hope we see Knightfall on screen someday.

To me, Joker is, and always will be, Batman's greatest foe, but that doesnt mean he's my favorite.

Notable mentions: Hugo Strange, Great White Shark, Mr. Whisper, James Gordan Jr.

5. Two-Face
4. Bane
3. Mr. Freeze
2. Riddler
1. Joker

For me, I just can't consider Catwoman a villain. She switches sides too much for me to consider her one of Batman's greatest adversaries. Besides that, we have a pretty similar list.

Harley Quinn, Hugo Strange, and Clayface were just BARELY out of my list.

"Just one of those mornings where you gotta pat the fanboy within , because of the insecurities ... A list to say which DC villains you love and the order you would felate them ? Useless fanboy list"

So, he's not allowed to have his own opinions and preferences as well as not being allowed to present them in an orderly fashion?

Brainiac, I'm glad to see someone else have Rocky II as their favorite. The scene where Adrian is laying in the hospital and she tells rocky to win and then the music and training montage starts is probably my favorite scene in any movie.
