THE BATMAN 2: Scarlett Johansson Becomes Andrea Beaumont/The Phantasm In New Fan-Art

Though we still don't know who Scarlett Johansson is playing The Batman - Part II, Andrea Beaumont is a likely possibility, and this new fan-art imagines the former Black Widow as The Phantasm...

"Your angel of death awaits..."

One of the more surprising casting announcements to come our way in a while hit last week when the news broke that Scarlett Johansson, who was an integral part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, for many years, is in final talks for an undisclosed role in Matt Reeves' The Batman - Part II.

Though the character the Black Widow star will play was not revealed by the trades, a few details have since slipped through. Some insiders believe she has been cast as a new love interest for Bruce Wayne, but others have heard that Johansson is actually playing a villain who may start off as Wayne's ally/lover before her more sinister side is unveiled later on.

This, along with the fact that Reeves has previously mentioned that the villain has never appeared in any live-action Batman project before, leads us to believe that the long-awaited sequel will introduce a version of Andrea Beaumont, aka The Phantasm.

Beaumont first appeared in the 1993 animated film Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, before going on to make her DC Comics debut many years later in Tom King's Batman/Catwoman 12-issue maxiseries. The Phantasm was created to be a dark (well, darker) mirror of Batman, with both characters becoming costumed vigilantes following the deaths of the parents, but only one crossing the line as a ruthless killer.

There are other possibilities, of course, but none quite fit the bill as well as Beaumont. Whoever Johansson is playing, the movie is also expected to feature a male villain (more here).

Check out some fan-art featuring Johansson as Beaumont/The Phantasm at the links below, and let us know if you think this is who she'll play in The Batman - Part II in the comments section.

Johansson played Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for many years, but her tenure as the lethal former Red Room assassin came to an end when Nat was killed off in Avengers: Endgame. She did reprise the role for a Black Widow prequel movie, but - despite rumors that she may be back for Avengers: Doomsday - has never shown much interest in revisiting the character.

The Batman - Part II is set to hit theaters on October 1, 2027.

I’d much rather see her as Poison Ivy or Harley Quinn… Phantasm wouldn’t be as impactful as it was when the cartoon movie came out and would be a lazy twist seeing how most Batman fans would already know the twist.

@slickrickdesigns - I think if they adapt Phantasm, it shouldn't be Andrea, it should be her father who faked his death after the mob (via the Joker) killed his wife instead of him and has come back to get revenge. But then add another third act twist (similar to the seawall bombing from the first film) by revealing that Andrea put the hit out on her father instead because he was a criminal, but the Joker killed her mother instead.

Like you say, we already know she's Phantasm, so the fans would be expecting it and it'd lose its impact for us. The general audience wouldn't know, so it'd be fine for them, but twists like that only really work if the entire audience isn't expecting it. It's why I don't think an Under The Red Hood live action film would work. We know that Jason Todd is Red Hood, so we're expecting it.

@slickrickdesigns - For Batman fans, yes. For the general public? Could still work. Batman fans sort of had an idea of what was going to happen with Talia in Rise of the Dark Knight.

She is too small for that role PLUS if it is true that the role was intended for Emma Stone it seems even more of a stretch as she is not believable as a deadly assassin.

@Forthas - Jodie Comer would play a great Andrea Beaumont/Phantasm.

@Forthas - …she is not believable as a deadly assassin”, but that’s the whole point of her secret identity. In Mask of the Phantasm, everyone thought she was a man until the big reveal.

@WruceBayne -

If they are doing the Phantasm storyline I would have gone with Sophie Turner...

I acknowledge she is the weaker actress but she is physically more in line with the part and she is a good enough actress.

@Forthas - in Phantasm, that was the big misdirect. Everyone thought she was a man because of the Phantasms build until the mask came off. After that, she was short, slim and had giggly lady parts. Lol
But joking aside, I don’t think they’re doing The Phantasm movie for the Batman 2. I think Johansen is going to be a regular mobster with no costume or anything like that.
They need a female to find out that Batman and Bruce Wayne are one and the same and that’s really her only purpose.

If Reeves is adapting Mask if the Phantasm, The Batman 2 will automatically become my favorite Batman movie. Unless they butcher the heck outta the story.
TheJok3r
TheJok3r - 12/9/2025, 8:59 AM
@TheDpool - Mask of the Phantasm is by far one of the best Batman movies ever written. You can never go wrong with drawing inspiration from the animated series.
TheDpool
TheDpool - 12/9/2025, 10:59 AM
@TheJok3r - I seriously think I'd stand behind a frame by frame live action adaption. And from where The Batman left us, it would fit perfectly.
TheJok3r
TheJok3r - 12/9/2025, 12:35 PM
@TheDpool - The Batman II will be at least twice as long as Mask of the Phantasm, so it would have to be a different story that follows the same or similar plot beats to the animated movie. Regardless, I just hope someone finally shows the world what a truly great story that movie was, as live action will give it the public recognition it deserves.
TheDpool
TheDpool - 12/9/2025, 8:56 PM
@TheJok3r - Completely agree. The only thing I think from the original that would really need changed, or at least added on, would be the Jokers role. Because at this point he hasn't the same affect as he does in the animated universe.

If the rumors of Emma Stone being offered the part first are true then I feel she might have worked as Andrea a bit more then ScarJo…

However ScarJo is a good actress and could portray the character well imo if this is indeed who she is playing.

@TheVisionary25 - With the Phantasm mask on, body type was big and bulky, same size as Batman. With the Phantasm mask off, very slim, lost about 12 inches in height and now has breast. 😆

Anyone interested can find an unofficial comic here that continues the story of The Batman. The villain is Phantasm.

It predates the Scarlett Johansson announcement.

I think this is gonna disappoint a lot of people when it comes out she's playing another Falcone or something. Isn't Andrea Beaumont supposed to be an old flame of an older Bruce? Does anyone really think they'd cast ScarJo as an 'old flame' to the younger sad boi Bruce?
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 12/9/2025, 8:47 AM
@JackDeth - ScarJo is only 2 years older then Pattinson.

Also she doesn’t necessarily have to be an old flame of Bruce’s and they could obviously tell her story differently in this.
TheJok3r
TheJok3r - 12/9/2025, 8:56 AM
@JackDeth - She's only two years older than Pattinson, plus they don't have to adapt the movie word for word. In the animated movie, she came back into Bruce's life after he had been Batman for a decade, so here (assuming that's who she's playing), they'd change that to however long he's been Batman up to this point. In the animated movie, the main mob boss killed her father, which brought her back to Gotham for revenge. They can change that here so that it was Falcone who did it, and that she's after his right hand man (Penguin) who helped him.

The first movie set the groundwork for a number of directions this movie can take, be it the court of owls, hush, or mask of the phantasm.
JackDeth
JackDeth - 12/9/2025, 8:58 AM
@TheVisionary25 - Yeah, I know. I just feel like the first film established him as a younger-seeming Bruce just coming back to Gotham. ScarJo just seems too elegant for him. Like, are they gonna sit around listen to Nirvana together? lol
JackDeth
JackDeth - 12/9/2025, 8:59 AM
@TheJok3r - I still think this is wishful thinking, but I guess we'll see.

TheJok3r - 12/9/2025, 9:01 AM
@JackDeth - If the reports are true about her being a secret villain, who else is there ? There's Phantasm, there's a female version of Hush, and then there's the court of owls.

She could be just as moody as him given they bonded over the death of his parents and her mother at the time.
