Diane Lane Defends The Infamous 'Martha' Scene From BATMAN V SUPERMAN

The name 'Martha' brought about much derision and discussion for Batman v Superman, and now Martha Kent herself, Diane Lane, has weighed in on the film's controversial twist...

Just as it seemed Batman was about to claim victory over Superman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the conflict between the two heroes came to a grinding halt with the mention of one name: Martha. In a twist that inspired as much criticism as it did philosophical discussion, the two heroes united over their mothers' shared name. The topic has been hotly debated since the film's release, inspiring countless memes, parodies, and essays.

Diane Lane, who portrayed Martha Kent in the film, has now spoken out in defense of the twist, saying the name allows Bruce to finally see Superman as a human and overcome his feeling of powerlessness. "Superman and Batman certainly entered the superhero business from opposite roads, yet they have similar histories. There's the loss of your original family, so they're both orphans. And I don't think Batman sees Superman as human until he realizes that he has mother. And I think, when Batman makes the decision to rescue Martha, Superman's mother, in a way he's redeeming his own sense of powerlessness he had when he could not save his own mother."

@MattBellissimo - But-but-but... we get it... Why does everyone defending this decision assume it's because people just didn't understand it?!

@Spock0Clock - yes, we understand what it means.

The reason we hate it is

-no one calls their mom by their name

-how quickly they forgive each other.

I mean even if they stopped fighting, there should've still been some salt between the two.

@ALostCause - There's not much time for that, as they go to fight the cave troll and then supes is dead. But even during the funeral Bruce's dialog... Forget it, you're right, man.

@ALostCause - Also, it would have been no problem for supes to say "My mother... cough cough", bats would have gone through the same train of thought Diane Lane describes. The Martha factor was pure stupidness.

@FelM - I mean all they needed was for batman to say "we still need to talk" at some point. just to let us know that batman has a little conviction and still wants to protectr humanity from superman.

or yknow, you could just make batman seem like an asshole who forgives people way too easily, because that's batman's character right??? he forgives people constantly...? right?

It's not the twist itself that was the problem. It had a decent ideology behind it. It's execution though - that was beyond pathetic. It felt like something out of Austin Powers or something.
